Fundamental thickness limit of itinerant ferromagnetic SrRuO thin films
We report on a fundamental thickness limit of the itinerant ferromagnetic
oxide SrRuO that might arise from the orbital-selective quantum confinement
effects. Experimentally, SrRuO films remain metallic even for a thickness
of 2 unit cells (uc), but the Curie temperature, T, starts to decrease at 4
uc and becomes zero at 2 uc. Using the Stoner model, we attributed the T
decrease to a decrease in the density of states (N). Namely, in the thin
film geometry, the hybridized Ru-d orbitals are terminated by top and
bottom interfaces, resulting in quantum confinement and reduction of N.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figure
A quantitative microfluidic angiogenesis screen for studying anti-angiogenic therapeutic drugs
Anti-angiogenic therapy, which suppresses tumor growth by disrupting oxygen and nutrient supply from blood to the tumor, is now widely accepted as a treatment for cancer. To investigate the mechanisms of action of these anti-angiogenesis drugs, new three dimensional (3D) cell culture-based drug screening models are increasingly employed. However, there is no in vitro high-throughput screening (HTS) angiogenesis assay that can provide uniform culture conditions for the quantitative assessment of physiological responses to chemoattractant reagents under various concentrations of anti-angiogenesis drugs. Here we describe a method for screening and quantifying the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-induced chemotactic response on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) cultured with different concentrations of bortezomib, a selective 26S proteasome inhibitor. With this quantitative microfluidic angiogenesis screen (QMAS), we demonstrate that bortezomib-induced endothelial cell death is preceded by a series of morphological changes that develop over several days. Lanczos exact diagonalization study of field-induced phase transition for Ising and Heisenberg antiferromagnets
Using an exact diagonalization treatment of Ising and Heisenberg model
Hamiltonians, we study field-induced phase transition for two-dimensional
antiferromagnets. For the system of Ising antiferromagnet the predicted
field-induced phase transition is of first order, while for the system of
Heisenberg antiferromagnet it is the second-order transition. We find from the
exact diagonalization calculations that the second-order phase transition
(metamagnetism) occurs through a spin-flop process as an intermediate step.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Constraint of B_{d,s}-bar{B}_{d,s} mixing on warped extra-dimension model
Recent CDF measurement of the Bs-Bs oscillation frequency, at the Tevatron
imposes significant constraint on various models for new physics. A warped
extra-dimension model with custodial isospin symmetry accommodates the Bd-Bd
mixing at tree level mainly through the Kaluza-Klein gluons. This is due to the
misalignment between the bulk gauge eigenstates and the localized Yukawa
eigenstates of the bulk fermions. We adopt the universal 5D Yukawa coupling
model where all Yukawa couplings are of order one. The SM fermion mass spectra
and mixings are controlled by the bulk Dirac mass parameters. With two versions
of the hadronic parameter values, we investigate the implication of the
observed BB mixings on this model. The CP-violating effects on the Bd system is
shown to provide very strong constraint: The first Kaluza-Klein mass of a gluon
has its lower bound about 3.7 TeV with 1 sigma uncertainty.Comment: published version in JHEP, CP-violating effects include
A spin-dependent local moment approach to the Anderson impurity model
We present an extension of the local moment approach to the Anderson impurity
model with spin-dependent hybridization. By employing the two-self-energy
description, as originally proposed by Logan and co-workers, we applied the
symmetry restoration condition for the case with spin-dependent hybridization.
Self-consistent ground states were determined through variational minimization
of the ground state energy. The results obtained with our spin-dependent local
moment approach applied to a quantum dot system coupled to ferromagnetic leads
are in good agreement with those obtained from previous work using numerical
renormalization group calculations
Abnormal phase flip in the coherent phonon oscillations of Ca2RuO4
We employ an optical pump-probe technique to study coherent phonon oscillations in Ca2RuO4. We find that oscillation amplitude of an Ag symmetric phonon mode is strongly suppressed at 260 K, a putative transition point of orbital ordering. The oscillation also shows a gradual but huge change in its phase, such that the oscillation even flips over with a 180 change across the temperature. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the Ag phonon has an eigenmode of octahedral distortion with conventional tilting along the a axis and antipolar distortion of apical oxygen. Careful inspection of the lattice captures an unusually large antipolar distortion in low-temperature structures, which may play a crucial role for the phase transition at 260 K. ©2018 American Physical Societ
Observation of Parity Violation in the Omega-minus -> Lambda + K-minus Decay
The alpha decay parameter in the process Omega-minus -> Lambda + K-minus has
been measured from a sample of 4.50 million unpolarized Omega-minus decays
recorded by the HyperCP (E871) experiment at Fermilab and found to be [1.78 +/-
0.19(stat) +/- 0.16(syst)]{\times}10^{-2}. This is the first unambiguous
evidence for a nonzero alpha decay parameter, and hence parity violation, in
the Omega-minus -> Lambda + K-minus decay.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure
