Thermodynamical Metrics and Black Hole Phase Transitions
An important phase transition in black hole thermodynamics is associated with
the divergence of the specific heat with fixed charge and angular momenta, yet
one can demonstrate that neither Ruppeiner's entropy metric nor Weinhold's
energy metric reveals this phase transition. In this paper, we introduce a new
thermodynamical metric based on the Hessian matrix of several free energy. We
demonstrate, by studying various charged and rotating black holes, that the
divergence of the specific heat corresponds to the curvature singularity of
this new metric. We further investigate metrics on all thermodynamical
potentials generated by Legendre transformations and study correspondences
between curvature singularities and phase transition signals. We show in
general that for a system with n-pairs of intensive/extensive variables, all
thermodynamical potential metrics can be embedded into a flat (n,n)-dimensional
space. We also generalize the Ruppeiner metrics and they are all conformal to
the metrics constructed from the relevant thermodynamical potentials.Comment: Latex, 25 pages, reference added, typos corrected, English polished

Higgs Boson Decays into Single Photon plus Unparticle
The decay of the standard model Higgs boson into a single photon and a vector
unparticle through a one-loop process is studied. For an intermediate mass
Higgs boson, this single photon plus unparticle mode can have a branching ratio
comparable with the two-photon discovery mode. The emitted photon has a
continuous energy spectrum encoding the nature of the recoil unparticle. It can
be measured in precision studies of the Higgs boson after its discovery.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
On the security of arbitrated quantum signature schemes
Due to potential capability of providing unconditional security, arbitrated
quantum signature (AQS) schemes, whose implementation depends on the
participation of a trusted third party, received intense attention in the past
decade. Recently, some typical AQS schemes were cryptanalyzed and improved. In
this paper, we analyze security property of some AQS schemes and show that all
the previous AQS schemes, no matter original or improved, are still insecure in
the sense that the messages and the corresponding signatures can be exchanged
among different receivers, allowing the receivers to deny accepting the
signature of an appointed message. Some further improvement methods on the AQS

Do female association preferences predict the likelihood of reproduction?
Sexual selection acting on male traits through female mate choice is commonly inferred from female association preferences in dichotomous mate choice experiments. However, there are surprisingly few empirical demonstrations that such association preferences predict the likelihood of females reproducing with a particular male. This information is essential to confirm association preferences as good predictors of mate choice. We used green swordtails (<i>Xiphophorus helleri</i>) to test whether association preferences predict the likelihood of a female reproducing with a male. Females were tested for a preference for long- or short-sworded males in a standard dichotomous choice experiment and then allowed free access to either their preferred or non-preferred male. If females subsequently failed to produce fry, they were provided a second unfamiliar male with similar sword length to the first male. Females were more likely to reproduce with preferred than non-preferred males, but for those that reproduced, neither the status (preferred/non-preferred) nor the sword length (long/short) of the male had an effect on brood size or relative investment in growth by the female. There was no overall preference based on sword length in this study, but male sword length did affect likelihood of reproduction, with females more likely to reproduce with long- than short-sworded males (independent of preference for such males in earlier choice tests). These results suggest that female association preferences are good indicators of female mate choice but that ornament characteristics of the male are also important
The \u3cem\u3eChlamydomonas\u3c/em\u3e Genome Reveals the Evolution of Key Animal and Plant Functions
Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a unicellular green alga whose lineage diverged from land plants over 1 billion years ago. It is a model system for studying chloroplast-based photosynthesis, as well as the structure, assembly, and function of eukaryotic flagella (cilia), which were inherited from the common ancestor of plants and animals, but lost in land plants. We sequenced the ∼120-megabase nuclear genome of Chlamydomonas and performed comparative phylogenomic analyses, identifying genes encoding uncharacterized proteins that are likely associated with the function and biogenesis of chloroplasts or eukaryotic flagella. Analyses of the Chlamydomonas genome advance our understanding of the ancestral eukaryotic cell, reveal previously unknown genes associated with photosynthetic and flagellar functions, and establish links between ciliopathy and the composition and function of flagella
Molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the evolution of form and function in the amniote jaw.
The amniote jaw complex is a remarkable amalgamation of derivatives from distinct embryonic cell lineages. During development, the cells in these lineages experience concerted movements, migrations, and signaling interactions that take them from their initial origins to their final destinations and imbue their derivatives with aspects of form including their axial orientation, anatomical identity, size, and shape. Perturbations along the way can produce defects and disease, but also generate the variation necessary for jaw evolution and adaptation. We focus on molecular and cellular mechanisms that regulate form in the amniote jaw complex, and that enable structural and functional integration. Special emphasis is placed on the role of cranial neural crest mesenchyme (NCM) during the species-specific patterning of bone, cartilage, tendon, muscle, and other jaw tissues. We also address the effects of biomechanical forces during jaw development and discuss ways in which certain molecular and cellular responses add adaptive and evolutionary plasticity to jaw morphology. Overall, we highlight how variation in molecular and cellular programs can promote the phenomenal diversity and functional morphology achieved during amniote jaw evolution or lead to the range of jaw defects and disease that affect the human condition
Evaluation of the Frails' Fall Efficacy by Comparing Treatments (EFFECT) on reducing fall and fear of fall in moderately frail older adults: study protocol for a randomised control trial
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Falls are common in frail older adults and often result in injuries and hospitalisation. The Nintendo<sup>® </sup>Wii™ is an easily available exercise modality in the community which has been shown to improve lower limb strength and balance. However, not much is known on the effectiveness of the Nintendo<sup>® </sup>Wii™ to improve fall efficacy and reduce falls in a moderately frail older adult. Fall efficacy is the measure of fear of falling in performing various daily activities. Fear contributes to avoidance of activities and functional decline.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This randomised active-control trial is a comparison between the Nintendo WiiActive programme against standard gym-based rehabilitation of the older population. Eighty subjects aged above 60, fallers and non-fallers, will be recruited from the hospital outpatient clinic. The primary outcome measure is the Modified Falls Efficacy Scale and the secondary outcome measures are self-reported falls, quadriceps strength, walking agility, dynamic balance and quality of life assessments.</p> <p>Discussions</p> <p>The study is the first randomised control trial using the Nintendo Wii as a rehabilitation modality investigating a change in fall efficacy and self-reported falls.
