    Feasibility of Reduced Lap-Spliced Length in Polyethylene Fiber-Reinforced Strain-Hardening Cementitious Composite

    This research investigates the interfacial behavior between polyethylene (PE) fiber-reinforced strain-hardening cement composite (PE-SHCC) and reinforcing bars that are spliced in the tension region to determine feasibility of reduced lap-spliced length in PE-SHCC. Twenty test specimens were subjected to monotonic and cyclic tension loads. The variables include the replacement levels of an expansive admixture (0% and 10%), the compressive strength of the SHCC mixtures (40 MPa and 80 MPa), and the lap-spliced length in the tension region (40% and 60% of the splice length recommended by ACI 318). The PE-SHCC mixture contains polyethylene fiber to enhance the tensile strength, control the widths of the cracks, and increase the bond strength of the lap splice reinforcement and the calcium sulfo-aluminate- (CSA-) based expansive admixture to improve the tension-related performance in the lap splice zone. The results have led to the conclusion that SHCC mixtures can be used effectively to reduce the development length of lap splice reinforcement up to 60% of the splice length that is recommended by ACI 318. The addition of the calcium sulfo-aluminate-based expansive admixture in the SHCC mixtures improved the initial performance and mitigated the cracking behavior in the lap splice region

    Effect of Expansive Admixtures on the Shrinkage and Mechanical Properties of High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced Cement Composites

    High-performance fiber-reinforced cement composites (HPFRCCs) are characterized by strain-hardening and multiple cracking during the inelastic deformation process, but they also develop high shrinkage strain. This study investigates the effects of replacing Portland cement with calcium sulfoaluminate-based expansive admixtures (CSA EXAs) to compensate for the shrinkage and associated mechanical behavior of HPFRCCs. Two types of CSA EXA (CSA-K and CSA-J), each with a different chemical composition, are used in this study. Various replacement ratios (0%, 8%, 10%, 12%, and 14% by weight of cement) of CSA EXA are considered for the design of HPFRCC mixtures reinforced with 1.5% polyethylene (PE) fibers by volume. Mechanical properties, such as shrinkage compensation, compressive strength, flexural strength, and direct tensile strength, of the HPFRCC mixtures are examined. Also, crack width and development are investigated to determine the effects of the EXAs on the performance of the HPFRCC mixtures, and a performance index is used to quantify the performance of mixture. The results indicate that replacements of 10% CSA-K (Type 1) and 8% CSA-J (Type 2) considerably enhance the mechanical properties and reduce shrinkage of HPFRCCs

    A simple oscillating reaction model subject to additive Gaussian white noise is investigated as the model is located in the dynamic region of oscillations. The model is composed of three ordinary differential equations representing the time evolutions of X, Y, and Z, respectively. Initially, a uniform random noise is separately added to the three equations to study the effect of noise on the oscillatory cycle of X, Y, and Z. For a given value of noise intensity, the amplitude of oscillation increases monotonically with time. Furthermore, the noise is added to any one of the three equations to study the impact of noise on one species on the bifurcation behavior of the other
