    Performance Assessment of Buckling Restrained Braces

    AbstractIn the company paper, the global drift capacity and demands of a 6-story steel office building adopted with buckling restrained braces (BRBs) have been evaluated. This paper evaluates the seismic performance of the building from a local perspective. In detail, the capacity and demands of the BRBs were assessed by test data and response analysis. Then, the level of confidence was computed against the potential of BRB yielding, buckling and fracture failures. The result shows that the BRBs can provide a high level of confidence, ensuring the building to achieve the performance objectives of immediate occupancy and life safety. But in meeting the performance objective of collapse prevention, the confidence level may be far smaller than the 50%-value recommended by FEMA 351. It suggests a necessity of more carefully assessing the seismic vulnerability of braced steel frames, especially for collapse prevention and from a local perspective

    Stress intensity factors for cusp-type crack problem under mechanical and thermal loading

    The general solutions of the stress intensity factors (SIFs) for a cusp-type crack problem under remote uniform mechanical and thermal loads are presented in this work. According to the complex variable theory and the method of conformal mapping, a symmetric airfoil crack is mapped onto a unit circle, and both the temperature and stress potentials are used to solve the relevant boundary-value problems. By introducing the auxiliary function and applying the analytical continuation theorem, the SIFs at the cusp-type crack tip can be analytically determined. The obtained SIF results are dependent on the geometric configurations of the cusp-type crack components and the magnitudes of the mechanical and thermal loads. For some combinations of combined loads, the SIF is maximized, and the system has a high risk of damage

    Scarf-related hangman's fracture: A case report

    Background: Injury to the cervical spine due to a scarf-associated accident has not been reported in the literature. We present a case of a hangman's fracture in a 43-year-old woman that resulted from a scarf-related injury as a consequence of a motor vehicle accident. Purpose: To identify the mechanism of a scarf-related injury causing Hangman's fracture. Case Report: A 43-year-old woman was involved in a motor vehicle accident. She was wearing a scarf, which is a common clothing accessory for women in Malaysia. The scarf was violently torn off her head during the injury, causing a type I hangman's fracture. A halo vest for a total period of 3 months was applied. Conclusion: A scarf-related injury can cause an injury that resembles judicial hanging, leading to a traumatic spondylolisthesis of the axis. Careful evaluation of the cervical spine radiographs is crucial as occult fracture of the axis can be missed

    Selecting Resort Locations

    [[abstract]]This study examines a comprehensive and objective three-stage method for selecting resort location in Taiwan that maximize competitive advantage. The factors and criteria used in the evaluation model are obtained from an exhaustive literature review and interviews with 16 experts. In the first stage, for which the modified Delphi method is used to identify the evaluation criteria, a survey is performed to rank the relative importance of the 22 criteria identified in the interviews. In the second stage, 19 experts evaluate potential resort locations using a subjective multi-criteria model, the analytical hierarchy process (AHP). The analytical results yield rankings of resorts of the following types: casino resorts, seaside resorts, health/spa resorts and lakeside resorts. In the final stage, a sensitivity analysis is performed to clarify the strength of the various influences on resort selection.     Baculovirus Transduction of Mesenchymal Stem Cells: In Vitro Responses and In Vivo Immune Responses After Cell Transplantation

    Baculovirus holds great promise for the genetic modification of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). However, whether baculovirus transduction provokes undesired MSCs responses that might compromise their in vivo applications has yet to be examined. Hereby, we unraveled that baculovirus transduction of human MSCs upregulated the transcription of interleukin (IL)-1 beta, interferon (IFN)-alpha and IL-6, but not tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and IFN-gamma. However, only IL-6 secretion was detectable by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Baculovirus transduction also stimulated transient, low level upregulation of human leukocyte antigen I (HLA-I) on the human MSCs surface, yet it did not either altered the HLA-II expression or impaired the MSCs ability to inhibit lymphocyte proliferation. After transplantation into allogeneic rats, the transduced rat MSCs elicited transient, mild macrophage responses, but the cells remained tolerant as judged by the persistence of transplanted cells and absence of CD8(+) T cells infiltration. Besides, transplantation of the transduced MSCs did not provoke systemic induction of monocytes and CD8(+) T cells. This study, for the first time, explores the responses of MSCs to virus transduction and confirms the safety of transplanting baculovirus-engineered MSCs into immunocompetent animals for cell-based gene therapy

    One pot electrochemical synthesis of poly(melamine) entrapped gold nanoparticles composite for sensitive and low level detection of catechol

    A simple and cost effective synthesis of nanomaterials with advanced physical and chemical properties have received much attention to the researchers, and is of interest to the researchers from different disciplines. In the present work, we report a simple and one pot electrochemical synthesis of poly(melamine) entrapped gold nanoparticles (PM-AuNPs) composite. The PM-AuNPs composite was prepared by a single step electrochemical method, wherein the AuNPs and PM were simultaneously fabricated on the electrode surface. The as-prepared materials were characterized by various physicochemical methods. The PM-AuNPs composite modified electrode was used as an electrocatalyst for oxidation of catechol (CC) due to its well-defined redox behavior and enhanced electro-oxidation ability towards CC than other modified electrodes. Under optimized conditions, the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was used for the determination of CC. The DPV response of CC was linear over the concentration ranging from 0.5 to 175.5 μM with a detection limit of 0.011 μM. The PM-AuNPs composite modified electrode exhibits the high selectivity in the presence of range of potentially interfering compounds including dihydroxybenzene isomers. The sensor shows excellent practicality in CC containing water samples, which reveals the potential ability of PM-AuNPs composite modified electrode towards the determination of CC in real samples

    An Empirical Comparison of Consumer Innovation Adoption Models: Implications for Subsistence Marketplaces

    So called “pro-poor” innovations may improve consumer wellbeing in subsistence marketplaces. However, there is little research that integrates the area with the vast literature on innovation adoption. Using a questionnaire where respondents were asked to provide their evaluations about a mobile banking innovation, this research fills this gap by providing empirical evidence of the applicability of existing innovation adoption models in subsistence marketplaces. The study was conducted in Bangladesh among a geographically dispersed sample. The data collected allowed an empirical comparison of models in a subsistence context. The research reveals the most useful models in this context to be the Value Based Adoption Model and the Consumer Acceptance of Technology model. In light of these findings and further examination of the model comparison results the research also shows that consumers in subsistence marketplaces are not just motivated by functionality and economic needs. If organizations cannot enhance the hedonic attributes of a pro-poor innovation, and reduce the internal/external constraints related to adoption of that pro-poor innovation, then adoption intention by consumers will be lower
