    DC UPS for Critical Loads

    Get PDF
The usual way to avoid a computer shutdown during a mains failure is to connect an  uninterruptible power supply system (UPS), which can be suitably modified and fitted inside the computer cabinet by the use of proposed methodology known as a dc UPS.  Conventional desk top UPS systems store electricity in form of chemical energy in batteries and when ever mains fail the batteries provide DC power which is then converter to ac by inverter and then fed to the computer in order to save critical data.  Thus power from mains or from UPS is fed to switched mode power supply unit which converts it to dc to  supply the computer motherboard and accessories.  Leaving the case of the computer powered by mains, duing power failure the dc power is unnecessarily converted to ac and then to dc again in SMPS hence high switching losses and heat is produced there by making the entire system very lowe efficient.  In this work it is proposed to directly feed the dc power from the battery to the computer SMPS system by building a UPS arrangement within the computer system.  This not noly saves space, it is highly efficient compared to the conventional ups system, easy to carry, low cost and reliable since there is no change over operation is required/.  A complete design of an ac to dc power supply with an internal dc UPS is presented in this paper. . A prototype has been fully developed and tested as a PC power supply. Thus the result is achieved at full power about 6-8 minutes

Haria is a rice-based fermented beverage that is popular among tribal and low income people in lateritic West Bengal and East-Central India. The principal ingredient of this beverage is low grade boiled rice (Oryza sativa L.), which is mixed with a traditional starter, called bakhar, and fermented within a heat-sterilized earthen pot for 3-4 days. The main aim of this study was to investigate the ethnobotanical importance and traditional process of haria preparation. The method adopted for this study was based on interactive questionnaires and laboratory experiments. It was found that the pH decreased during the course of fermentation with increased titratable acidity of 1.42%. The alcohol content was 2-3% (v/v) in the consumable beverages. This documentation will be useful for further exploitation of haria as a health drink

Zinc-chelated Vitamin C Stimulates Adipogenesis of 3T3-L1 Cells

Adipose tissue development and function play a critical role in the regulation of energy balance, lipid metabolism, and the pathophysiology of metabolic syndromes. Although the effect of zinc ascorbate supplementation in diabetes or glycemic control is known in humans, the underlying mechanism is not well described. Here, we investigated the effect of a zinc-chelated vitamin C (ZnC) compound on the adipogenic differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. Treatment with ZnC for 8 d significantly promoted adipogenesis, which was characterized by increased glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase activity and intracellular lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells. Meanwhile, ZnC induced a pronounced up-regulation of the expression of glucose transporter type 4 (GLUT4) and the adipocyte-specific gene adipocyte protein 2 (aP2). Analysis of mRNA and protein levels further showed that ZnC increased the sequential expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) and CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein alpha (C/EBPα), the key transcription factors of adipogenesis. These results indicate that ZnC could promote adipogenesis through PPARγ and C/EBPα, which act synergistically for the expression of aP2 and GLUT4, leading to the generation of insulin-responsive adipocytes and can thereby be useful as a novel therapeutic agent for the management of diabetes and related metabolic disorders

    No full text
ABSTRACT: The spectral response of the uniform FBG with different grating parameters such as grating length and index change are provided and discussed. The coupled mode theory is a suitable tool for analysis and obtaining quantitative information about the spectrum of a fiber Bragg grating. The coupled mode equations can be obtained and simplified by using the weak waveguide approximation. The spectrum characteristics can be obtained by solving these coupled mode equations. In this paper simulation of FBG has been carried out to analyze the spectral characteristics of the FBG. An optical FBG is being simulated with the help of advanced software module such as the R soft and the modeled sensor is evaluated for the grating and different efficiency of various grating shape parameters, modulation depth, etc. The relationship between the maximum reflectance, 3dB bandwidth and centre wavelength with grating parameters are also given and discussed. Optimization and improvement of the system can be realized by using the simulation results. Since the present work not only deals with theoretical aspects of FBGs but also leads to the development of simulation tools which can be used in the area of communications and sensors

Dual concept has been recognized in appreciation of Kaala or time employing the scholars of Ayurveda. Saambatsara or Nityaga Kaala denotes the year and climate changes throughout the year and Atura Avastha or Avastika Kaala stands for the health repute along with ailment prevalence and their control about the weather changes. The weather change can steer the earth’s biological structures. Developing countries with restricted assets are expected to face a host of health consequences because of weather change, along with vector-borne and water-borne diseases. The distribution of infectious ailment includes complex social and demographic factors. Global climate change is a phenomenon this is now taken into consideration strongly associated with health and hazards. The outcomes of climate change on exposed biological incidences, in addition to societies prone to expose with disease, are a challenge for the complete scientific community. Rising temperatures, warm waves, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, droughts, fires, lack of forest, and glaciers, in conjunction with the disappearance of rivers and desertification, can directly and circuitously concern with human pathologies which can be physical and mental

Polyvinylidene Difluoride: A Universal Binder for Preparation of Solid Phase Microextraction Devices

    No full text
The communication describes the application of a fluorocarbon-based polymer as a high performance binder component for coatings suitable for a variety of solid phase microextraction (SPME) configurations. SPME devices are characterized by their ability to perform physicochemical extraction of chemical compounds from a given sample, rending said chemical compounds suitable for instrumental determinations; fundamentally speaking, physiochemical extraction is accomplished by thermodynamic equilibrium driven by diffusion and partitioning of chemical compounds. A polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) polymer was used to immobilize various sorbent particles on different supports to create different formats of SPME, namely fiber, thin-film membrane, and CBS devices. In this report, PVDF-based coatings are introduced as universal SPME coatings that are amenable to both gas chromatography (GC) and liquid chromatography (LC) while also improving the physical stability of the resulting device, in addition to eliminating the need for highly toxic reagents associated with the preparation of fully fluorinated based coatings previously reported in the literature. Additional incorporation of other polymers to increase coating porosity as well as the adhesion of PVDF on metal surfaces is also described.</p
