    Modelling High-frequency Economic Time Series

The minute-by-minute move of the Hang Seng Index (HSI) data over a four-year period is analysed and shown to possess similar statistical features as those of other markets. Based on a mathematical theorem [S. B. Pope and E. S. C. Ching, Phys. Fluids A {\bf 5}, 1529 (1993)], we derive an analytic form for the probability distribution function (PDF) of index moves from fitted functional forms of certain conditional averages of the time series. Furthermore, following a recent work by Stolovitzky and Ching, we show that the observed PDF can be reproduced by a Langevin process with a move-dependent noise amplitude. The form of the Langevin equation can be determined directly from the market data.Comment: To appear in Proceedings of the Dynamics Days Asia Pacific Conference, 13-16 July, 1999, Hong Kong (Physica A, 2000

    Rapidly Quenched Kosterlitz-Thouless Superfluid Transitions

Rapidly quenched Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) superfluid transitions are studied by solving the Fokker-Planck equation for the vortex-pair dynamics in conjunction with the KT recursion relations. Power-law decays of the vortex density at long times are found, and the results are in agreement with a scaling proposal made by Minnhagen and co-workers for the dynamical critical exponent. The superfluid density is strongly depressed after a quench, with the subsequent recovery being logarithmically slow for starting temperatures near TKT_{KT}. No evidence is found of vortices being ''created'' in a rapid quench, there is only decay of the existing thermal vortex pairs.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, revtex4, version accepted for PR

Vortex Core Size in 3^3He-4^4He films with Monolayer Superfluid 4^4He

The superfluid transition of 3^3He-4^4He mixture films adsorbed on alumina powder is studied, with a 4^4He superfluid coverage near one layer. With up to 1.3 layers of 3^3He added, the transition becomes strongly broadened, indicating a linear increase in the vortex core size for 3^3He coverages below one layer. Annealing of the sample mixture at 4.2 K is found to be critically important in ensuring a homogeneous film across the porous substrate.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures, accepted for LT22 Conference Proceedings, Physica

A general method for the synthesis of nanostructured large-surface-area materials through the self-assembly of functionalized nanoparticles

A general synthetic method for the preparation of nanostructured materials with large surface area was developed by using nanoparticle building blocks. The preparation route involves the self-assembly of functionalized nanoparticles in a liquid-crystal phase. These nanoparticles are functionalized by using difunctional amino acid species to provide suitable interactions with the template. Optimum interactions for self-assembly of the nanoparticles in the liquid-crystal phase were achieved with one -NH2 group anchored to the nanoparticle surface per 25 Å2. To maximize the surface area of these materials, the wall thicknesses are adjusted so that they are composed of a monolayer of nanoparticles. To form such materials, numerous parameters have to be controlled such as the relative volume fraction of the nanoparticles and the template and size matching between the hydrophilic component of the copolymer and nanoparticles. The surface functionalization renders our synthetic route independent of the nanoparticles and allows us to prepare a variety of nanostructured composite materials that consist of a juxtaposition of different discrete oxide nanoparticles. Examples of such materials include CeO2, ZrO2, and CeO2–Al(OH)3 composites

    Anti-Japan

Although the Japanese empire rapidly dissolved following the end of World War II, the memories, mourning, and trauma of the nation's imperial exploits continue to haunt Korea, China, and Taiwan. In Anti-Japan Leo T. S. Ching traces the complex dynamics that shape persisting negative attitudes toward Japan throughout East Asia. Drawing on a mix of literature, film, testimonies, and popular culture, Ching shows how anti-Japanism stems from the failed efforts at decolonization and reconciliation, the Cold War and the ongoing U.S. military presence, and shifting geopolitical and economic conditions in the region. At the same time, pro-Japan sentiments in Taiwan reveal a Taiwanese desire to recoup that which was lost after the Japanese empire fell. Anti-Japanism, Ching contends, is less about Japan itself than it is about the real and imagined relationships between it and China, Korea, and Taiwan. Advocating for forms of healing that do not depend on state-based diplomacy, Ching suggests that reconciliation requires that Japan acknowledge and take responsibility for its imperial history

A Study of the Diplomatic Culture From Han to Tang Dynasty

In ancient China, the royal courts had output the Confucian culture to the surrounding ethnic regimes, the Northeastern Asian countries and so on from Han to Tang Dynasty (202 B. C. - 907 A. D.) and it was the core content of the diplomatic culture. Second, with the introduction and development of Buddhism, some diplomatic activities were related to Buddhism and it also was an important diplomatic cultural characteristic from Han to Tang Dynasty. Again, Tang Dynasty was the heyday of the development of Taoism in China. In the diplomatic activities, the royal courts’ output of Lao Zi’s Tao Te Ching and Lao Zi’s pictures by request of Koryo, India, Japan and other countries also was a diplomatic cultural phenomenon worthy of attention in the period

The Influence of Taoism on American Literature, a Study from the Perspective of Western Binary Opposition

    Get PDF
With the deepening communication between the East and the West. Taoism, a domestic religion in China, has also been introduced into the Western world. In particular the masterpiece of Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching, has affected numerous readers. There is a huge gap between Western binary opposition and the Eastern philosophy contained in Taoism. Caused by such a mentality, the misunderstanding of American literature on Tao Te Ching and Taoism is ubiquitous. This paper mainly analyzes the introduction and translation of Tao Te Ching in America, the misinterpretation and acceptance of the theory of Lao Tzu and the influence of Taoism on American writers, poets and Chinese-born American writers. Taoism has been greatly promoted and accepted in America with the help of these scholars and works
