Statistical properties of volatility in fractal dimension and probability distribution among six stock markets - USA, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, and Hong Kong

This study examines the statistical properties of volatility. Fractal dimension, probability distribution and two-point volatility correlation are used to measure and compare volatility among six different markets for the 12-year period from Jan. 1 1990 to Dec. 31 2001. New York market is found to be the strongest among the six in terms of market efficiency. Moreover, the Tokyo and Singapore markets are found to be very similar in fractal dimension and probability distribution, but different in their resistance to volatility : Tokyo has a higher ability to dissipate volatility. This phenomenon implies that the Tokyo market is more efficient than the Singapore market. The Hong Kong market is similar to the Singapore market in its ability to dissipate volatility. Meanwhile, the Taiwanese and Korean markets are the two most volatile markets among the six. Notably, the Taiwanese market is weaker than the Korean market in dissipating volatility.Volatility, fractal dimension, probability distribution.

Long-Run Purchasing Power Parity with Asymmetric Adjustment: Evidence from Mainland China and Taiwan

This study applies threshold cointegration test advanced by Enders and Siklos (2001) to investigate the properties of asymmetric adjustment in long-run purchasing power parity (PPP) for both Mainland China and Taiwan during the January 1986 to October 2009 period. Although there is evidence of long-run PPP for both Mainland China and Taiwan, the adjustment mechanism is asymmetric. These results have important policy implications for both Mainland China and Taiwan under study.threshold cointegration test; Purchasing Power Parity; asymmetric adjustment; Mainland China; Taiwan

Trichotomies for abstract semilinear differential equations

AbstractIn this paper we present some results concerning the existence and uniqueness of mild solutions to certain abstract semilinear differential equations and the asymptotic behavior of these solutions. The basic techniques used are the iterative method and the fixed point theory for differential equations in Banach space. However, the most pleasant here is that it can be applied to nonlinear equations without assuming the eigenvalues of the differential operator in the linear parts of the differential equation has non-zero real part

Phase Distribution and Phase Correlation of Financial Time Series

Scaling, phase distribution and phase correlation of financial time series are investigated based on the Dow Jones Industry Average (DJIA) and NASDAQ 10-minute intraday data for a period from Aug. 1 1997 to Dec. 31 2003. The returns of the two indices are shown to have nice scaling behaviors and belong to stable distributions according to the criterion of Levy's alpha stable distribution condition. A novel approach catching characteristic features of financial time series based on the concept of instantaneous phase is further proposed to study phase distribution and correlation. The analysis of phase distribution concludes return time series fall into a class which is different from other non-stationary time series. The correlation between returns of the two indices probed by the distribution of phase difference indicates there was a remarkable change of trading activities after the event of 911 attack, and this change persisted in later trading activities.Phase Distribution, High Frequency Data, Scaling Analysis, Levy Distribution, Stock Market, Frequency Variant

    Toona sinensis

Toona sinensis leaf (TSL) is commonly used as a vegetable and in spice in Asia. In this study, feeding with aqueous extract of TSL (TSL-A) alleviated oxidative stress and recovered the motility and functions of sperm in rats under oxidative stress. Protein expressions in testes identified by proteomic analysis and verified by Western blot demonstrated that TSL-A not only downregulated the level of glutathione transferase mu6 (antioxidant system), heat shock protein 90 kDa-β (protein misfolding repairing system), cofilin 2 (spermatogenesis), and cyclophilin A (apoptosis) but also upregulated crease3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A synthase 2 (steroidogenesis), heat shock glycoprotein 96, and pancreatic trypsin 1 (sperm-oocyte interaction). These results indicate that TSL-A promotes the functions of sperm and testes via regulating multiple testicular proteins in rats under oxidative stress, suggesting that TSL-A is a valuable functional food supplement to improve functions of sperm and testes for males under oxidative stress

Clinical application of platelet-rich fibrin as the sole grafting material in periodontal intrabony defects

AbstractBackground/purposePlatelet-rich fibrin (PRF) obtained by Choukroun’s technique is a healing biomaterial that concentrates in a single autologous fibrin membrane, mostly of platelets and cytokines from blood harvest, and without any artificial biochemical modification. However, no data are presently available concerning the use of PRF for the treatment of periodontal intrabony defects. This report was to present the clinical and radiographic changes of a patient with periodontal intrabony defects treated with PRF.Material and methodsThe left mandibular first molar (#36) and left maxillary second molar (#27) with intrabony defects were filled with PRF as the sole grafting material in a 38-year-old female patient. The primary outcomes evaluated in this study included changes in probing depth, attachment level, and radiographic bone density between baseline and 6 months postoperatively.ResultsThe results showed that the application of PRF as the sole grafting material in intrabony defects exhibited pocket reduction and gain in clinical attachment after 3 months and 6 months. Using National institute of health program, the 6 months postoperative radiographic density of images for #27 and #36 showed an increase of 1.6 and 1.3 fold compared with each preoperative radiography, respectively.ConclusionsFrom a clinical and radiologic point of view at 6 months after surgery, the use of PRF as the sole grafting material seems to be an effective modality of regenerative treatment for periodontal intrabony defects

Interaction-induced Metal to Topological Insulator Transition

By means of exact diagonalizations, the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model at quarter-filling in the limit of strong Hubbard on-site repulsion is investigated. We find that the non-interacting metallic state will be turned into a Chern insulator with saturated magnetization under strong correlations. That is, at such a metal-insulator transition, both the topological and the magnetic properties of the system are changed due to spontaneous breaking of time reversal symmetry in the ground states. According to our findings, this topological phase transition seems to be of first order. Our results illustrate the interesting physics in topological Mott transitions and provide guidance to the search of more interaction-induced topological phases in similar systems.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
