Massive surface-plasmon polaritons
It is well-known that a quantum of light (photon) has a zero mass in vacuum. Entering into a medium the photon creates a quasiparticle (polariton, plasmon, surface-phonon, surface-plasmon polariton, etc.) whose rest mass is generally not zero. In this letter, devoted to the memory of Mark Stockman, we evaluate the rest mass of light-induced surface-plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and discuss an idea that collisions of two massive SPP quasiparticles can result in changes of their frequencies according to the energy and momentum conservation laws
Direct amplitude-phase near-field observation of higher-order anapole states
Anapole states associated with the resonant suppression of electric-dipole
scattering exhibit minimized extinction and maximized storage of
electromagnetic energy inside a particle. Using numerical simulations, optical
extinction spectroscopy and amplitude-phase near-field mapping of silicon
dielectric disks, we demonstrate high-order anapole states in the near-infrared
wavelength range (900-1700 nm). We develop the procedure for unambiguously
identifying anapole states by monitoring the normal component of the electric
near-field and experimentally detect the first two anapole states as verified
by far-field extinction spectroscopy and confirmed with the numerical
simulations. We demonstrate that higher order anapole states possess stronger
energy concentration and narrower resonances, a remarkable feature that is
advantageous for their applications in metasurfaces and nanophotonics
components, such as non-linear higher-harmonic generators and nanoscale lasers

During aircraft operation, the assessment of operation parameters with the different use of nomograms is completed. This approach is prevalent in the operation of aviation gas-turbine engines as part of aircraft power plants. In this case, for example, the assessment of engine operation parameters on the ground, depending on environmental conditions prior to start-up and run-up, is required. Reducing working hours of the aircraft power plants maintenance can be provided by the automation of the denoted procedures which purpose is the formation of the applicable list of values for assessed parameters while assigning available environmental conditions considering the required restrictions. To allow for the visualization and familiar conceptions of carried out assessments, it is advisable not to be limited to only documenting quantitative parameter estimations but also to provide them with graphical representations. The purpose of the article is not aimed at describing a complete algorithm of the engine operation parameters assessment but demonstrating a solution capability for the automation of the procedures for the engine operation parameters assessment on the ground as the task of search for a solution in the restricted conditions using the approximation 30 apparatus and piecewise approximations by the method of the smallest squares and the correlation criterion of significance. The examples of quantitative estimations for one of mass domestic engines are given. The described approach is applicable to a broad list of engines due to the common character of algorithms for the parameter assessment using nomograms. Vibration monitoring of machines is an integral part of their technical health estimation while in service andΒ prevention of collapse resulting from resonance conditions operation or material fatigue.Aviation gas-turbine engines and land based gas turbine β typical representatives of the of machines which are subject obligatory vibro-monitoring. In most cases it should be carried out continuously, but, in some cases (for example, power-plants of light helicopters), vibro-monitoring is performed within periods reckoned in dozens of hours. Now one-axial vibration transmitters of various types are thus used. Anyway, the data received as a result of vibro-monitoring are processed, first of all, with the use of range verification and a number ofΒ smoothing modes and the estimation of a tendency of vibration change modes while in service, examples of which shown on the engines are displayed in a paper. In some cases, there is a necessity of the simplified estimation of a vibrational condition of the machine for additional points or holding operative primary vibro-monitoring without engaging of a rented control equipment. The possible solution is the use of the modern mobile devices equipped with acceleration transmitters and the specialized software for archiving and vibro-monitoring data presentation in real-time mode. In the training process these devices appear full-scale substitution of vibration pickups and an oscillograph sheaf at estimating critical frequencies of rotors rotation with the possibility of archiving of the monitored data for the further processing.The vibrational monitoring technique with the use of microelectromechanical systems of modern mobile devices, has a number of advantages over the other ways.
