    Probing the superconducting gap symmetry of PrRu4_{4}Sb12_{12}: A comparison with PrOs4_{4}Sb12_{12}

    We report measurements of the magnetic penetration depth λ\lambda in single crystals of PrRu4_{4}Sb12_{12} down to 0.1 K. Both λ\lambda and superfluid density ρs\rho_{s} exhibit an exponential behavior for TT << 0.5TcT_{c}, with parameters Δ\Delta(0)/\textit{k}B_{B}\textit{T}c_{c} = 1.9 and λ(0)\lambda(0) = 2900 \AA. The value of Δ\Delta(0) is consistent with the specific-heat jump value of ΔC/γTc\Delta C/\gamma T_{c} = 1.87 measured elsewhere, while the value of λ(0)\lambda(0) is consistent with the measured value of the electronic heat-capacity coefficient γ\gamma. Our data are consistent with PrRu4_{4}Sb12_{12} being a moderate-coupling, fully-gapped superconductor.     Microbial and biogeochemical responses to projected future nitrate enrichment in the California upwelling system

    Coastal California is a dynamic upwelling region where nitrogen (N) and iron (Fe) can both limit productivity and influence biogeochemistry over different spatial and temporal scales. With global change, the flux of nitrate from upwelling is expected to increase over the next century, potentially driving additional oceanic regions toward Fe limitation. In this study we explored the effect of changes in Fe/N ratio on native phytoplankton from five currently Fe-replete sites near the major California upwelling centers at Bodega Bay and Monterey Bay using nutrient addition incubation experiments. Despite the high nitrate levels (13–30 μ M) in the upwelled water, phytoplankton at three of the five sites showed increased growth when 10 μ M nitrate was added. None of the sites showed enhanced growth following addition of 10 nM Fe. Nitrate additions favored slow sinking single-celled diatoms over faster sinking chain-forming diatoms, suggesting that future increases in nitrate flux could affect carbon and silicate export and alter grazer populations. In particular, solitary cells of Cylindrotheca were more abundant than the toxin-producing genus Pseudonitzschia following nitrate addition. These responses suggest the biogeochemistry of coastal California could change in response to future increases in nitrate, and multiple stressors like ocean acidification and hypoxia may further result in ecosystem shifts

    We explore the ultra-fast optical response of Yb_{14}MnSb_{11}, providing further evidence that this Zintl compound is the first ferromagnetic, under-screened Kondo lattice.     A high flux source of cold strontium atoms

    We describe an experimental apparatus capable of achieving a high loading rate of strontium atoms in a magneto-optical trap operating in a high vacuum environment. A key innovation of this setup is a two dimensional magneto-optical trap deflector located after a Zeeman slower. We find a loading rate of 6x10^9/s whereas the lifetime of the magnetically trapped atoms in the 3P2 state is 54s.Comment: 12 pages, 16 figure

    Electron operator at the edge of the 1/3 fractional quantum Hall liquid

    This study builds upon the work of Palacios and MacDonald (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 76}, 118 (1996)), wherein they identify the bosonic excitations of Wen's approach for the edge of the 1/3 fractional quantum Hall state with certain operators introduced by Stone. Using a quantum Monte Carlo method, we extend to larger systems containing up to 40 electrons and obtain more accurate thermodynamic limits for various matrix elements for a short range interaction. The results are in agreement with those of Palacios and MacDonald for small systems, but offer further insight into the detailed approach to the thermodynamic limit. For the short range interaction, the results are consistent with the chiral Luttinger liquid predictions.We also study excitations using the Coulomb ground state for up to nine electrons to ascertain the effect of interactions on the results; in this case our tests of the chiral Luttinger liquid approach are inconclusive.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure

    Effect of magnetic order on the superfluid response of single-crystal ErNi2_{2}B2_{2}C: A penetration depth study

    We report measurements of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth Δλ\Delta \lambda (T) in single crystals of ErNi2_{2}B2_{2}C down to \sim0.1 K using a tunnel-diode based, self-inductive technique at 21 MHz. We observe four features: (1) a slight dip in Δλ\Delta \lambda (T) at the Neˊ\acute{e}el temperature TNT_{N} = 6.0 K, (2) a peak at TWFMT_{WFM} = 2.3 K, where a weak ferromagnetic component sets in, (3) another maximum at 0.45 K, and (4) a final broad drop down to 0.1 K. Converting to superfluid density ρs\rho_{s}, we see that the antiferromagnetic order at 6 K only slightly depresses superconductivity. We seek to explain some of the above features in the context of antiferromagnetic superconductors, where competition between the antiferromagnetic molecular field and spin fluctuation scattering determines increased or decreased pairbreaking. Superfluid density data show only a slight decrease in pair density in the vicinity of the 2.3 K feature, thus supporting other evidences against bulk ferromagnetism in this temperature range.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure

    Modelling growth of swietenia macrophylla (mahogany) plantation in Gum-Gum Forest Reserve, Sabah.

    Growth models can contribute to the forest management decision making process by providing stand development forecasts. Mahogany plantation in Gum-Gum Forest Reserve Sabah was planted in 1968 with spacing 2.74×2.74 m within an area of 0.52 hectare. Diameter at breast height (dbh) and tree height data were collected from year 1969 to 2006. This study aimed to determine the efficient regression equations for growth prediction of the mahogany plantation. Regression models were developed by search from literature as a basis references. Four diameter prediction models and six height prediction models were developed. Proc Reg in SAS was used to evaluate the regression equations. Performance of the model was measured by using root mean square error (RMSE), bias and coefficient of determination (R2). The chosen diameter prediction model is lnH=3.07-10.42D-1+0.1lnA with RMSE (0.31), bias (1.76) and R2 (0.68). The recommended prediction model slightly underestimated the actual diameter. The chosen height prediction model is lnD=354-3.98A-1 with RMSE (0.11), bias (0.01) and R2 (0.91). This recommended height prediction model gives very close height estimate to the actual height

    Lightning strike fatalities: three case reports of military personnel in Malaysia

    Lightning strikes have been known to cause fatal injuries. However, these cases have not been adequately highlighted in Malaysia. This paper reports on three cases of military personnel who lost their lives after being struck by lightning while on operational duties. It is extremely important to implement adequate safety measures and ensure that all military personnel are adequately trained on emergency procedures, such as Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to prevent casualties of lightning strikes in future. This paper addresses several issues to avoid similar occurrences; the importance of taking extra safety precautions and recognizing signs of lightning strikes, as well as the immediate administration of CPR on victims

    Affleck-Dine baryogenesis in inflating curvaton scenario with O(1010210-10^2TeV) mass moduli curvaton

    We study the Affleck-Dine (AD) baryogenesis in the inflating curvaton scenario, when the curvaton is a moduli field with O(1010210-10^2TeV) mass. A moduli field with such mass is known to be free from the Polonyi problem, and furthermore its decay products can explain the present cold dark matter abundance. In our scenario, it further explains the primordial curvature perturbation and the present baryon density all together. The current observational bound on the baryon isocurvature perturbation, which severely constrains the AD baryogenesis with the original oscillating moduli curvaton scenario, is shown to put practically negligible constraint if we replace the oscillating curvaton with the inflating curvaton.Comment: 1+21pages v2: minor correction v3: included short reviews, added refs, fixed typo
