Microwave Induced Instability Observed in BSCCO 2212 in a Static Magnetic Field

We have measured the microwave dissipation at 10 GHz through the imaginary part of the susceptibility, χ"\chi^", in a BSCCO 2212 single crystal in an external static magnetic field HH parallel to the c-axis at various fixed temperatures. The characteristics of χ"(H)\chi^"(H) exhibit a sharp step at a field HstepH_{step} which strongly depends on the amplitude of the microwave excitation hach_{ac}. The characteristics of hach_{ac} vs. HstepH_{step}, qualitatively reveal the behavior expected for the magnetic field dependence of Josephson coupling.Comment: 4 pages, 3 Postscript figure

Derivation of the Curie-Weiss Law in Dynamical Mean-Field Theory

We present an analytic derivation of the linear temperature dependence of the inverse static susceptibility χ1(T,U)TTc(U)\chi ^{-1}(T,U)\sim T-T{_{c}}(U) near the transition from a paramagnetic to a ferromagnetic correlated metal within the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) for the Hubbard model. The equations for the critical temperature and interaction strength of the transition are also determined.Comment: 5 pages, no figure

Psicologia e potere in "Im Westen nichts Neues". Una lettura del romanzo di Remarque a partire da Freud

    Get PDF
In 1915, a few months after the outbreak of the 1st World War, Sigmund Freud writes the essay "Zeitgemäßes über Krieg und Tod", in which he reflects about the reason why war is still possible in a cultural advanced society like the Western one, and about the relation of modernity with the problem of “evil”, violence and death. This article takes its cue from this essay in order to analyse Erich Maria Remarque's novel "Im Westen nichts Neues" (1928-29) from an innovative point of view. Remarque himself argues in many interviews and articles that his book should neither be considered a historical report about the 1st World War nor merely an antiwar-novel about the dramatic experience of a lost generation, but rather a true psychological novel. As a matter of fact, "Im Westen nichts Neues" tells about the “human all too human” mechanisms of violence and power through an understated representation of the trauma of a generation which was thrown into a sort of “state of exception”, a state situated simultaneously outside and inside civil society. The essay aims to illustrate how Freud and Remarque take a very similar perspective in their works about the Great War when considering the complex relation between culture and war, civilisation and violence, psychology and power in Western modern society

Magnetic anomalies in single crystalline ErPd2Si2

Considering certain interesting features in the previously reported 166Er Moessbauer effect and neutron diffraction data on the polycrystalline form of ErPd2Si2 crystallizing in ThCr2Si2-type tetragonal structure, we have carried out magnetic measurements (1.8 to 300 K) on the single crystalline form of this compound. We observe significant anisotropy in the absolute values of magnetization (indicating that the easy axis is c-axis) as well as in the features due to magnetic ordering in the plot of magnetic susceptibility (chi) versus temperature (T) at low temperatures. The chi(T) data reveal that there is a pseudo-low dimensional magnetic order setting in at 4.8 K, with a three-dimensional antiferromagnetic ordering setting in at a lower temperature (3.8 K). A new finding in the chi(T) data is that, for H//, but not for H//, there is a broad shoulder in the range 8-20 K, indicative of the existence of magnetic correlations above 5 K as well, which could be related to the previously reported slow-relaxation-dominated Moessbauer spectra. Interestingly, the temperature coefficient of electrical resistivity is found to be isotropic; no feature due to magnetic ordering could be detected in the electrical resistivity data at low temperatures, which is attributed to magnetic Brillioun-zone boundary gap effects. The results reveal complex nature of the magnetism of this compound
