Public Sector Collectice Bargaining in Ohio: Before and After Senate Bill No. 133
When 1983 ushered in a new administration more sensitive to the glaring absence of such legislation, the passage of a comprehensive public employees\u27 collective bargaining law was clearly imminent. This article will examine the inadequacies of Ohio\u27s law prior to the enactment of Senate Bill No. 133; summarize the provisions of this new statute; and note its impact on public employees and their employee organizations
The Gluonic Field of a Heavy Quark in Conformal Field Theories at Strong Coupling
We determine the gluonic field configuration sourced by a heavy quark
undergoing arbitrary motion in N=4 super-Yang-Mills at strong coupling and
large number of colors. More specifically, we compute the expectation value of
the operator tr[F^2+...] in the presence of such a quark, by means of the
AdS/CFT correspondence. Our results for this observable show that signals
propagate without temporal broadening, just as was found for the expectation
value of the energy density in recent work by Hatta et al. We attempt to shed
some additional light on the origin of this feature, and propose a different
interpretation for its physical significance. As an application of our general
results, we examine when the quark undergoes oscillatory motion,
uniform circular motion, and uniform acceleration. Via the AdS/CFT
correspondence, all of our results are pertinent to any conformal field theory

Holographic dilepton production in a thermalizing plasma
We determine the out-of-equilibrium production rate of dileptons at rest in
strongly coupled N=4 Super Yang-Mills plasma using the AdS/CFT correspondence.
Thermalization is achieved via the gravitational collapse of a thin shell of
matter in AdS_5 space and the subsequent formation of a black hole, which we
describe in a quasistatic approximation. Prior to thermalization, the dilepton
spectral function is observed to oscillate as a function of frequency, but the
amplitude of the oscillations decreases when thermal equilibrium is approached.
At the same time, we follow the flow of the quasinormal spectrum of the

QTL and systems genetics analysis of mouse grooming and behavioral responses to novelty in an open field
International audienceThe open field is a classic test used to assess exploratory behavior, anxiety, and locomotor activity in rodents. Here we mapped quantitative trait loci (QTLs) underlying behaviors displayed in an open field, using a panel of 53 BXD recombinant inbred mouse strains with deep replication (10 per strain and sex). The use of these strains permits the integration and comparison of data obtained in different laboratories, and also offers the possibility to study trait covariance by exploiting powerful bioinformatics tools and resources. We quantified behavioral traits during 20 min test sessions including (1) percent time spent and distance travelled near the wall (thigmotaxis), (2) leaning against the wall, (3) rearing, (4) jumping, (5) grooming duration, (6) grooming frequency, (7) locomotion, and (8) defecation. All traits exhibit moderate heritability making them amenable to genetic analysis. We identified a significant QTL on chromosome M.m. 4 at ~104 Mb that modulates grooming duration in both males and females (LRS values of ~18, explaining 25% and 14% of the variance, respectively) and a suggestive QTL modulating locomotion that maps to the same locus. Bioinformatic analysis indicates Disabled 1 (Dab1, a key protein in the reelin signaling pathway) as a particularly strong candidate gene modulating these behaviors. We also found two highly suggestive QTLs for a sex by strain interaction for grooming duration on chromosomes 13 and 17. In addition, we identified a pairwise epistatic interaction between loci on chromosomes 12 at 36-37 Mb and 14 at 34-36 Mb that influences rearing frequency in males
On the Beaming of Gluonic Fields at Strong Coupling
We examine the conditions for beaming of the gluonic field sourced by a heavy
quark in strongly-coupled conformal field theories, using the AdS/CFT
correspondence. Previous works have found that, contrary to naive expectations,
it is possible to set up collimated beams of gluonic radiation despite the
strong coupling. We show that, on the gravity side of the correspondence, this
follows directly (for arbitrary quark motion, and independently of any
approximations) from the fact that the string dual to the quark remains
unexpectedly close to the AdS boundary whenever the quark moves
ultra-relativistically. We also work out the validity conditions for a related
approximation scheme that proposed to explain the beaming effect though the
formation of shock waves in the bulk fields emitted by the string. We find that
these conditions are fulfilled in the case of ultra-relativistic uniform
circular motion that motivated the proposal, but unfortunately do not hold for

On Field Theory Thermalization from Gravitational Collapse
Motivated by its field theory interpretation, we study gravitational collapse
of a minimally coupled massless scalar field in Einstein gravity with a
negative cosmological constant. After demonstrating the accuracy of the
numerical algorithm for the questions we are interested in, we investigate
various aspects of the apparent horizon formation. In particular, we study the
time and radius of the apparent horizon formed as functions of the initial
Gaussian profile for the scalar field. We comment on several aspects of the

Parents' Perspectives on the School Experiences of Children with Cancer
Interviews with 59 parents of school age children with cancer indicate problems children encountered in returning to school: missing significant amounts of school due to illness and treatments, teasing by classmates and peers, and strained relations with teachers. Most parents report that despite missing much school their child was caught up with schoolwork, suggesting that academic difficulties are not paramount. Most parents also report receiving substantial help from sympathetic and competent educators. However, parents also indicate that some teachers were insensitive to their child's condition, while others were overprotective, suggesting the need for a delicate balance in defining appropriate teacher behavior. Electrified plasma in AdS/CFT correspondence
We construct new gravity backgrounds holographic dual to neutral plasma with
U(1) global symmetry in the presence of constant electric field, considering
its full back-reactions to the metric. As the electric field and the induced
current cause a net energy in-flow to the system, the plasma is continually
heated up and the corresponding gravity solution has an expanding horizon.
After proposing a consistent late-time expansion scheme, we present analytic
solutions in the scheme up to next-leading order, and our solutions are new
time-dependent solutions of 5D asymptotic AdS Einstein-Maxwell(-Chern-Simons)
theory. To extract dual CFT stress tensor and U(1) current from the solutions,
we perform a rigorous holographic renormalization of
Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory including full back-reactions, which can
in itself be an interesting addition to literatures. As by-products, we obtain
interesting modifications of energy-momentum/current Ward identities due to the

Transport properties of the quark-gluon plasma from lattice QCD
I review the progress made in extracting transport properties of the
quark-gluon plasma from lattice QCD simulations. The information on shear and
bulk viscosity, the "low-energy constants" of hydrodynamics, is encoded in the
retarded correlators of Tmunu, the energy-momentum tensor. Euclidean
correlators, computable on the lattice, are related to the retarded correlators
by an integral transform. The most promising strategy to extract shear and bulk
viscosity is to study the shear and sound channel correlators where the
hydrodynamic modes dominate. I present preliminary results from a comprehensive
