    Get PDF
This study examined factors related to student persistence in college, with particular attention to engineering students. All direct from high school and transfer students who entered a large midwestern university in the engineering college were tracked through fourteen semesters and summer sessions between fall 1990 and spring 1995. The study was conducted for the following goals and purposes: (1) To assemble and design a data base that would allow for the characterization and tracking of all undergraduate engineering students. (2) To examine the relationships between significant variables in a model that could identify students potentially at risk of attrition. (3) To provide baseline retention data that could be compared to data from other cohort years and after retention initiatives are implemented; In order to accomplish these objectives it was necessary to obtain and reformat a very large data base. A dependent variable called category of risk was established to classify students according to their progress toward the goal of completing their engineering degrees;Statistical analyses were performed to provide college-wide, descriptive information. Methodologies were developed to predict which students were likely to be lost due to attrition. It was believed that if students who were at higher risk for attrition could be identified early in their college careers, appropriate interventions could be developed to reduce the likelihood of attrition; The approach taken in this study was supported by the information found in the review of the literature. The articles reinforced the necessity for individual colleges or institutions to monitor, analyze, and to the greatest extent possible predict student retention. The study will add to the current body of knowledge about retention and contribute to the spectrum of ideas that feed into the various theories of retention. It could also serve as a model for other universities interested in developing similar data bases or descriptive, predictive, or comparative measures. The statistical methods used in this research could be adapted to other sets of independent and dependent variables

Technological in education is increasingly in demand because it is easier and saves time. Technological developments especially in education can be an alternative way to improve the quality of learning, knowledge, and improve achievement. With digitalization growing and many people are already using technology and the internet has encouraged peoples to use e-learning. Tutor also began to follow the existing changes from the conventional to online tutoring. However, many people who are interested in using online tutoring do not guarantee that these tutors are more successful than competitors who begin to appear in the markets with owns advantages. in this case, Zenius Education is a pioneer of EdTech in Indonesia of online tutoring has also experienced it. In fact even being the first Zenius has not become the first rank in Indonesia. Therefore, one way that Zenius can do is to increase the net profit of its service users to keep using Zenius and attract new users using Zenius to see the number of people using it. Therefore, researchers want to find out whether the system quality, information system, service quality, perceived usefulness, and user satisfaction have and influence on the net benefit of Zenius Education users. The study uses a quantitative method using online questionnaires for respondents through Google fors. The sample in this study proves 152 respondents with criteria for women and man, 14-17 years old, who are currently in high school grade 1 or grade 2, domiciled in Tangerang and use Zenius Education for a minimum of 3-6 months. Data processing was performed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) techniques using Lisrel 8.80 software. The results of this study indicate a positive relationship between system quality and user satisfaction, information quality with user satisfaction, service quality with user satisfaction, perceived usefulness with user satisfaction, and user satisfaction with net benefit. Therefore, Zenius can increase net benefits through user satisfaction. Zenius can accelerate the process of accessing pages on the web, adding questions and excercises in the application, adding live learning features, and two-way communication so that students can be more facilitated in the learning process because they can ask scholl material directly and get answers through the teacher robot or teacher directly. Zenius can change the appearance of the web and applications more attractive by adding colors and images and reducing information on the web to be shorther, clearer, and denser. Zenius can add report features to give students an evaluation of the lessons that are poorly understood and provide pop-up features of material that are poorly understood in order to increase knowledge and grades better

Targeting tauopathy with engineered tau-degrading intrabodies

BACKGROUND: The accumulation of pathological tau is the main component of neurofibrillary tangles and other tau aggregates in several neurodegenerative diseases, referred to as tauopathies. Recently, immunotherapeutic approaches targeting tau have been demonstrated to be beneficial in decreasing tauopathy in animal models. We previously found that passive immunotherapy with anti-tau antibody to human tau or expression of an anti-tau secreted single-chain variable fragment (scFv) in the central nervous system of a mouse model of tauopathy decreased but did not remove all tau-associated pathology. Although these and other studies demonstrate that conventional immunotherapeutic approaches targeting tau can influence tau pathogenesis, the majority of pathological tau remains in the cytosol of cells, not typically accessible to an extracellular antibody. Therefore, we reasoned targeting intracellular tau might be more efficacious in preventing or decreasing tauopathy. METHODS: By utilizing our anti-tau scFv, we generated anti-tau intrabodies for the expression in the cytosol of neurons. To enhance the degradation capacity of conventional intrabodies, we engineered chimeric anti-tau intrabodies fused to ubiquitin harboring distinct mutations that shuttle intracellular tau for either the proteasome or lysosomal mediated degradation. To evaluate the efficacy in delaying or eliminating tauopathy, we expressed our tau degrading intrabodies or controls in human tau transgenic mice by adeno-associated virus prior to overt tau pathology and after tau deposition. RESULTS: Our results demonstrate, the expression of chimeric anti-tau intrabodies significantly reduce tau protein levels in primary neuronal cultures expression human tau relative to a non-modified anti-tau intrabody. We found the expression of engineered tau-degrading intrabodies destined for proteasomal-mediated degradation are more effective in delaying or eliminating tauopathy than a conventional intrabody in aged human tau transgenic mice. CONCLUSION: This study, harnesses the strength of intrabodies that are amendable for targeting specific domains or modifications with the cell-intrinsic mechanisms that regulate protein degradation providing a new immunotherapeutic approach with potentially improved efficacy

    Get PDF
Employees’ work engagement is one of the important outcomes to identify whether the employees are enjoying their work. Currently, New Ways of Working (NWOW) are increasingly being adopted in the workplace to suit the needs of a diverse workforce, with the aim of increasing work engagement. NWOW research is currently scarce, particularly in terms of the effects on people's work engagement and organisational performance. This paper contributes to an initial framework to examine the relationships of NWOW and work engagement, with proactive personality and job crafting as mediators. Identifying this relationship has the potential to contribute to work engagement and NWOW literature, and to human resource development practice

    Get PDF
Objective. The incidence/death rate of hepatocellular cancer (HCC) is increasing in America, and it is unclear if access to care contributes to this increase. Design/Patients. 575 HCC cases were reviewed for demographics, education, and tumor size. Main Outcome Measures. Endpoints to determine access to HCC care included whether an eligible patient underwent liver transplantation. Results. Transplant patients versus those not transplanted were younger (55.7 versus 61.8 yrs, P < 0.001), males (89.3% versus 74.4%, P = 0.013), and having completed high school (10.1% versus 1.2%, P = 0.016). There were differences in transplant by ethnicity, insurance, and occupation. Transplant patients with HCC had higher median income via census classification (54,383versus54,383 versus 49,383, P = 0.046) and self-reported income (48,948versus48,948 versus 38,800, P = 0.002). Differences in access may be related to exclusion criteria for liver transplant, as Pacific Islanders were more likely to have tumor size larger than 5 cm compared to Whites and have BMI > 35 (20.7%) compared to Whites (6.4%) and Asians (4.7%). Conclusions. Ethnic differences in access to transplant are associated with socioeconomic status and factors that can disqualify patients (advanced disease/morbid obesity). Efforts to overcome educational barriers and screening for HCC could improve access to transplant
