Dynamics of the magnetic and structural a -> e phase transition in Iron
We have studied the high-pressure iron bcc to hcp phase transition by
simultaneous X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) and X-ray Absorption
Spectroscopy (XAS) with an X-ray dispersive spectrometer. The combination of
the two techniques allows us to obtain simultaneously information on both the
structure and the magnetic state of Iron under pressure. The magnetic and
structural transitions simultaneously observed are sharp. Both are of first
order in agreement with theoretical prediction. The pressure domain of the
transition observed (2.4 0.2 GPa) is narrower than that usually cited in
the literature (8 GPa). Our data indicate that the magnetic transition slightly
precedes the structural one, suggesting that the origin of the instability of
the bcc phase in iron with increasing pressure is to be attributed to the
effect of pressure on magnetism as predicted by spin-polarized full potential
total energy calculations
A re-interpretation of the Triangulum-Andromeda stellar clouds: a population of halo stars kicked out of the Galactic disk
The Triangulum-Andromeda stellar clouds (TriAnd1 and TriAnd2) are a pair of
concentric ring- or shell-like over-densities at large ( 30 kpc)
and ( -10 kpc) in the Galactic halo that are thought to have been
formed from the accretion and disruption of a satellite galaxy. This paper
critically re-examines this formation scenario by comparing the number ratio of
RR Lyrae to M giant stars associated with the TriAnd clouds with other
structures in the Galaxy. The current data suggest a stellar population for
these over-densities ( at 95% confidence) quite unlike
any of the known satellites of the Milky Way ( for
the very largest and for the smaller satellites) and more
like the population of stars born in the much deeper potential well inhabited
by the Galactic disk (). N-body simulations of a
Milky-Way-like galaxy perturbed by the impact of a dwarf galaxy demonstrate
that, in the right circumstances, concentric rings propagating outwards from
that Galactic disk can plausibly produce similar over-densities. These results
provide dramatic support for the recent proposal by Xu et al. (2015) that,
rather than stars accreted from other galaxies, the TriAnd clouds could
represent stars kicked-out from our own disk. If so, these would be the first
populations of disk stars to be found in the Galactic halo and a clear
signature of the importance of this second formation mechanism for stellar
halos more generally. Moreover, their existence at the very extremities of the
disk places strong constraints on the nature of the interaction that formed

The Influence of Sagittarius and the Large Magellanic Cloud on the Milky Way Galaxy
We present N-body simulations of a Sagittarius-like dwarf spheroidal galaxy
(Sgr) that follow its orbit about the Milky Way (MW) since its first crossing
of the Galaxy's virial radius to the present day. As Sgr orbits around the MW,
it excites vertical oscillations, corrugating and flaring the Galactic stellar
disc. These responses can be understood by a two-phase picture in which the
interaction is first dominated by torques from the wake excited by Sgr in the
MW dark halo before transitioning to tides from Sgr's direct impact on the disc
at late times. We show for the first time that a massive Sgr model
simultaneously reproduces the locations and motions of arc-like over densities,
such as the Monoceros Ring and the Triangulum Andromeda stellar clouds, that
have been observed at the extremities of the disc, while also satisfying the
solar neighbourhood constraints on the vertical structure and streaming motions
of the disc. In additional simulations, we include the Large Magellanic Cloud
(LMC) self consistently with Sgr. The LMC introduces coupling through
constructive and destructive interference, but no new corrugations. In our
models, the excitation of the current structure of the outer disk can be traced
to interactions as far back as 6-7 Gyr ago (corresponding to ). Given
the apparently quiescent accretion history of the MW over this timescale, this
places Sgr as the main culprit behind the vertical oscillations of the disc and
the last major accretion event for the Galaxy with the capacity to modulate its

Ethanol Vapours to Complement or Replace Sulfur Dioxide Fumigation of Table Grapes
Recent studies have shown that dipping table grapes in ethanol solutions at harvest improved storage of the fruit. We report here the first results obtained by treating "Chasselas" table grapes (Vitis vinifera) with ethanol vapours over the storage period. We tested the effect of ethanol at 0, 4 and 8 g/kg fruit during cold storage for 2, 4 and 6 weeks. We measured berry shatter, stem browning, Botrytis rot incidence and sensory appreciation by tasting panels. Ethanol vapours reduced Botrytis rot incidence and berry shatter, but hastened stem browning. Sensory analyses did not detect any differences between treatments
Changes in Grape Maturity Induced by Spraying Ethanol
Three different ethanol solutions were sprayed onto Cabernet Sauvignon (Vitis vinifera L.) clusters during the ripening period: 2.5, 5 and 10% by volume in water. Controls were sprayed with water alone. Three different times of spraying were also tested: 8, 10 and 13 weeks post-flowering. One of the observed changes was a lower titratable acidity in grape samples at harvest, when the clusters were sprayed with ethanol at 10 weeks, in comparison with controls. The wines made with grapes treated with ethanol after mid-veraison, had higher ODs at 520 nm than did the controls. This may due to a combined effect of red pigment levels and acidity. In addition, following malolactic fermentation, the acidity levels of wines made with ethanoltreated grapes were slightly higher than those made with the control grapes. Spraying ethanol at 13 weeks post-flowering increased the berry weight by 10% at harvest without decreasing the °Brix value. The corresponding wines had similar degrees of alcohol. This observation was made for the first time in 2001
Disk Heating, Galactoseismology, and the Formation of Stellar Halos
Deep photometric surveys of the Milky Way have revealed diffuse structures
encircling our Galaxy far beyond the "classical" limits of the stellar disk.
This paper reviews results from our own and other observational programs, which
together suggest that, despite their extreme positions, the stars in these
structures were formed in our Galactic disk. Mounting evidence from recent
observations and simulations implies kinematic connections between several of
these distinct structures. This suggests the existence of collective disk
oscillations that can plausibly be traced all the way to asymmetries seen in
the stellar velocity distribution around the Sun. There are multiple
interesting implications of these findings: they promise new perspectives on
the process of disk heating, they provide direct evidence for a stellar halo
formation mechanism in addition to the accretion and disruption of satellite
galaxies, and, they motivate searches of current and near-future surveys to
trace these oscillations across the Galaxy. Such maps could be used as
dynamical diagnostics in the emerging field of "Galactoseismology", which
promises to model the history of interactions between the Milky Way and its
entourage of satellites, as well examine the density of our dark matter halo.
As sensitivity to very low surface brightness features around external galaxies
increases, many more examples of such disk oscillations will likely be
identified. Statistical samples of such features not only encode detailed
information about interaction rates and mergers, but also about long
sought-after dark matter halo densities and shapes. Models for the Milky Way's
own Galactoseismic history will therefore serve as a critical foundation for

Gas Chromatography–Olfactometry Analyses of Volatiles Produced by ‘Fallglo’ and ‘US Early Pride’ Tangerines
‘Fallglo’ is a popular tangerine (Citrus reticulata Blanco) cultivar with high eating quality. However, ‘Fallglo’ may contain as many as 30–40 seeds per fruit. ‘US Early Pride’ is a seedless mutation of ‘Fallglo’ with similar quality attributes. The objective of the current study was to determine if ‘Fallglo’ and ‘US Early Pride’ fruit differed in the composition or quantity of aroma-active volatiles produced over time. Fruit were harvested bi-weekly from October to December. Juice was carefully extracted from 50 fruit, and volatiles were analyzed using gas chromatography (GC). Two subjects evaluated the GC effluents by olfactometry in triplicate runs for each sample. Volatile identification was done by GC-mass spectrometry and confirmed by sniffing of authentic standards. The same 32 aroma-active compounds were perceived in ‘Fallglo’ and ‘US Early Pride’, of which 25 were identified. Compounds were classified in odor descriptor groups: fatty (10 compounds), plastic or rubber (seven compounds), fruity or citrus (four compounds), floral (four compounds), mushroom (two compounds), green (two compounds) and other (one compound). ‘Fallglo’ and ‘US Early Pride’ had similar aroma intensities for the three first harvests (26 Oct., 3 Nov., 17 Nov.), but ‘Fallglo’ had higher levels of two fruity odorous peaks (E-2-pentenal and the coeluting compounds E-2-hexenal and ethyl 2 methyl butanoate) than did ‘US Early Pride’ at the December harvest. The last harvest showed significantly higher aroma intensity for six peaks in each cultivar, with only two peaks in common in both cultivars
Pulse propagation in discrete excitatory networks of integrate-and-fire neurons
We study the propagation of solitary waves in a discrete excitatory network of integrate-and-fire neurons. We show the existence and the stability of a fast wave and a family of slow waves. Fast waves are similar to those already described in continuum networks. Stable slow waves have not been previously reported in purely excitatory networks and their propagation is particular to the discrete nature of the network. The robustness of our results is studied in the presence of noise

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy, safety and tolerability of octreotide LAR (long-acting repeatable octreotide) in the primary therapy of acromegaly.
DESIGN AND PATIENTS: Ninety-eight previously untreated acromegalics were recruited into this prospective multicentre study. A total of 68 patients successfully completed 48 weeks of the study period, received 12 doses of octreotide LAR 10-30 mg every 4 weeks, and constituted the population used for this analysis.
MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: A clinically relevant reduction (i.e. to 2.5 microg/l and 20%) tumour volume reduction was reported in 63% and 75% of patients, respectively. A reduction in the severity of symptoms of acromegaly was observed early in treatment and was maintained throughout the study period.
CONCLUSION: Octreotide LAR represents a viable alternative to surgery for primary treatment of acromegaly leading to a progressive regression of tumour volume, a sustained control of biochemical abnormalities and an adequate relief of symptoms of the disease
