Farming is one of the most important components of most economies. No comprehensive picture exists of the health status of Iranian farmers and the work-related hazards that affect them. We aimed to determine the gaps in the current knowledge regarding the occupational health of Iranian farmworkers. Electronic databases including Medline, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase, as well as national databases including the Scientific Information Database, MagIran, and Barakat Knowledge System, were searched for articles published through March 2017. All epidemiologic studies regarding the occupational health of farmworkers in Iran were reviewed, regardless of their design, language, time of publication, and location. Of the 86 retrieved articles, 39 studies were ultimately analyzed. Most studies were conducted in Fars, Kerman, and Mazandaran provinces. According to the results of this review, chemical, physical, and biological hazards, along with work-related injuries, may be the main factors threatening the health of farmworkers. The unsafe use of pesticides was related to male infertility, eye and digestive complications, pesticide poisoning, pesticide absorption, hematological changes, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. Chemical hazards (e.g., the unsafe use of pesticides), physical hazards, injuries, and biological hazards (e.g., work-related infectious diseases) threaten the health of Iranian farmworkers. Moreover, farmworkers lack adequate knowledge about the occupational hazards they face and the relevant risk factors

Background: Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is one of the biggest health problems. Disabilities resulting from injuries such as spinal disability requires special attention because of their potential reduced to cause adverse effects in different systems of the body. Today, improving the Quality of Life (QOL) in patients with SCIs is an important goal of treatment. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the QOL and related factors among people with SCIs. Patients and Methods: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, 106 patients with SCI were selected through sampling based on census. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire and a Short-Form 36 (SF-36) health survey questionnaire for measuring the QOL among patients. Data were analyzed using SPSS 14 software and descriptive and inferential statistics. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The mean QOL in these patients was 37.1 ± 1.7 years (21 - 65 years) and mean disease duration was 7.3±6 years. The most common injury was paraplegia. Most of the patients have moderate QOL (54.7 %). The results showed a significant relationship between QOL and marital status and employment status (P < 0.05). Also, results showed a significant relationship between QOL and education levels (P = 0.002), age (P = 0.001), and duration of illness (P = 0.001).The highest and lowest scores were 64 ± 7.1 and 36 ± 5.3 for understanding General Health (GH) and role physical, respectively. Conclusions: The results show that patients with SCI have a moderate health-related QOL Determining the QOL is needed to focus on the strengths and weaknesses of patients with spinal cord injuries. Planning principles is recommended in order to reform the disability

Typical orbits of quadratic polynomials with a neutral fixed point: Brjuno type

We describe the topological behavior of typical orbits of complex quadratic polynomials P_alpha(z)=e^{2\pi i alpha} z+z^2, with alpha of high return type. Here we prove that for such Brjuno values of alpha the closure of the critical orbit, which is the measure theoretic attractor of the map, has zero area. Then combining with Part I of this work, we show that the limit set of the orbit of a typical point in the Julia set is equal to the closure of the critical orbit.Comment: 38 pages, 5 figures; fixed the issues with processing the figure

The methanolic extracts of the aerial parts of nine Stachys species: S. persica Gmel., S. fruticulosa M. B., S. laxa Boiss. & Buhse., S. inflata Benth., S. turcomanica Trautv., S. subaphylla Rech. F., S. setiferaC. A. Mey., S. byzantina C. Koch and S. trinervis Aitch. & Hemsl. were investigated for their antioxidant activity and total phenolic content using FRAP and Folin-Ciocalteu assays respectively. S. persica Gmel. and S. fruticulosa M. B. had the highest antioxidant activity (61.42 and 62.02 mmol FeII/100g) and total phenolic content (3294.96 and 4450.36 mg gallic acid/100 g) among these nine species. There was a direct correlation between total phenol and antioxidant activity (R2 = 0.9446, p 0.001) which indicates that polyphenols are the main antioxidants

Purpose: To clone Corynebacterium glutamicum ATCC21799 aspartokinase gene (EC 2.7.2.4) using shuttle expression vector pEKEx2 in order to increase lysine production. Methods: C. glutamicum DNA was extracted and used for amplification of aspartokinase gene (ask) by cloning into an E. coli/C. glutamicum shuttle expression vector, pEKEx2. Initially, the recombinant vector transformed into E. coli DH5á and then into C. glutamicum. Results: Electrophoresis of recombinant protein by SDS-PAGE showed that the molecular weight of the recombinant protein was 42 KD. The induction of recombinant vector by IPTG had an inhibitory effect on cell growth due to over-expression of the cloned gene. The results of lysine assay by Chinard method showed that lysine production increased about two-fold, compared with the parent strain, as a result of increased copy numbers of lysC gene in recombinant strain. Conclusion: A two-fold increase in lysine production was observed by cloning of the ASK gene in C. glutamicum rather than in E. coli, due to the presence of lysine exporter channel which facilitates lysine extraction. Keywords: LysC gene, Corynebacterium glutamicum, L- lysine, Cloning, Aspartokinase, E. col

Disease registry systems provide a strong information infrastructure for decision-making and research. The purpose of this study is to describe the implementation method and protocol of the COVID-19 registry in Khuzestan province, Iran. We established a steering committee and formulated the purposes of the registry. Then, based on reviewing the literature, and expert panels, the minimum data set, the data collection forms and the web-based software were developed. Data collection is done retrospectively through Hospital Information Systems, Medical Care Monitoring Center system (MCMC), Management of Communicable Disease Prevention and Control system (MCDPC) as well as, patients' records. For prospective data collection, the data collection forms are compiled with patients' medical records by the medical staff and are then entered into the registry system. We collect patients' administrative and demographic data, history and physical examinations, test and imaging results, disease progression, treatment, outcomes, and follow-ups of the confirmed and suspected inpatients and outpatients. From April 20 to December 5, 2020, the data of 4,812 confirmed cases and 7,113 suspected cases were collected from two COVID-19 referral hospitals. Based on our experience, recording information along with providing care for patients and putting patients' data registration in the medical staff's routine, structuring data, having a flexible technical team and rapid software development for multiple and continuous updates, automating data collection by connecting the registry to existing information systems and having different incentives, the registration process can be strengthened. © 2021 The Author

Radiation exposure and bells palsy: A hypothetical association

    Get PDF
Bells palsy is an idiopathic peripheral nerve palsy involving the facial nerve. It accounts for 60 to 75 of all cases of unilateral facial paralysis. The main mechanisms to induce BP remain unclear, but infection, ischemic condition and immunodeficiency may contribute to the development of Bells palsy. Accumulating evidence has shown several factors can trigger the reactivation of latent HSV including psychological stressors, physical stressors and immunosuppression. Ionization and non-ionization radiations are of importance of physical stressors. Some data have shown radiation can reactivate HSVs. Based on preliminary studies showing radiation reactivation of HSVs, we aimed to hypothesize radiation (in both forms of ionization and non-ion-ization) may cause Bells palsy. In the future, the role of radiotherapy, radiofrequency radiation from mobile phones and wireless devices in HSV reactivation and Bells palsy should be investigated. © 2018, Shiraz University of Medical Sciences. Background: Cancer registry can be a very important component of health information system in developing countries. Routine collection of data and ongoing monitoring of their quality can have a crucial role in priority setting and evidence-based policy making for controlling cancers and trends follow-up in low and middle-income countries. Evaluation of cancer registered data consists of four important components including: comparability, completeness, validity, and timeliness. Similar frameworks are utilized in different countries all over the world. Methods and Materials: We will use the national annual cancer registry reports in Iran alone or perhaps along with other Iranian published reports about childhood cancer incidence to determine the stability and trend of incidence rates over time and compare above mentioned reports with childhood cancer incidence data reported by other countries through a systematic review as well as in some cases meta-analysis in order to assess data quality. Data will also be collected from other sources such as death certificates to estimate mortality rates and other different methods will also be additionally applied, by use of which death certificates would be utilized to assess the quality of data, too. Conclusion: As the first step for proper measuring incidence rate of all types of cancers all over the country, we will assess and evaluate reported national cancer registry data in Iran in order to estimate the national burden of cancers in 1990-2013
