5-dim Superconformal Index with Enhanced En Global Symmetry

Get PDF
The five-dimensional N = 1 supersymmetric gauge theory with Sp(N) gauge group and SO(2N(f)) flavor symmetry describes the physics on N D4-branes with N-f D8-branes on top of a single O8 orientifold plane in Type I' theory. This theory is known to be superconformal at the strong coupling limit with the enhanced global symmetry ENf+1 for N-f <= 7. In this work we calculate the superconformal index on S-1 x S-4 for the Sp(1) gauge theory by the localization method and confirm such enhancement of the global symmetry at the superconformal limit for N-f <= 5 to a few leading orders in the chemical potential. Both perturbative and (anti) instanton contributions are present in this calculation. For N-f = 6, 7 cases some issues related the pole structure of the instanton calculation could not be resolved and here we could provide only some suggestive answer for the leading contributions to the index. For the Sp(N) case, similar issues related to the pole structure appear.1151sciescopu

Superconformal indices for non-Lagrangian theories in five dimensions

We propose two novel methods for computing the superconformal index of 5d superconformal field theories that cannot be described by conventional Lagrangian descriptions under mass deformations. The first approach involves the use of Higgs branch flows from UV Lagrangian theories, guided by transitions in 5-brane webs in Type IIB string theory. The second method employs the relationship between O7+7^+-plane and O77^--plane with eight D7-branes, which applies to particular non-Lagrangian theories realized by brane configurations involving an O7+7^+-plane. As a concrete application of our method, we compute the superconformal indices for all known rank-1 non-Lagrangian theories, which we also use to identify flavor symmetries and their global forms at the conformal field theory (CFT) fixed points.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure

The characteristic comparison of the accelerometer and the gyroscope in the measurement of human body sway

Get PDF
This study investigated the human body sway measuring instruments. An accelerometer and a gyroscope were used to examine patients with postural control related diseases in many studies. Some studies used either an accelerometer or a gyroscope attached to the head, chest, or waist to obtain the balance assessment parameters of body sway such as area, direction, etc. The purpose of this study is to identify the reliability between both sensors in human body sway analysis by assuming the human body sway as a simple pendulum model, and suggest an optimal measurement method using the acceleration and the gyroscope. The characteristic differences between the accelerometer and the gyroscope were illustrated, focusing mainly on the differences with respect to the position of the sensors. We confirmed that the magnitude, instead of three axis vector information, may be more useful in the body sway analysis

Real-time electrical measurement of L929 cellular spontaneous and synchronous oscillation

Nonexcitable cell types, fibroblasts of heart muscle or astrocytes, are well known for their spontaneous Ca2+ oscillations. On the other hand, murine fibroblast (L929) cells are known to be deficient in cell–cell adhesive proteins and therefore lack gap junctions for cellular communication. However, these cells exhibit a unique property of collectively synchronized and spontaneous oscillation, as revealed by real-time monitoring of cells cultured on a 250-μm diameter microelectrode for more than 3 days using an electrical cell-substrate impedance-sensing system (ECIS). Live-cell imaging is a widely used technique for oscillation detection, but it has limitations relating to cellular physiological environment maintenance for microscopic analysis and for prolonged periods of study. The present research emphasizes an electrical-sensing technique (ECIS) capable of overcoming the most important issues inherent in live-cell imaging systems for the detection of L929 cellular spontaneous and synchronized oscillation in real-time for longer periods. Possible mechanisms involved in L929 oscillation were elucidated to be periodic extension/contraction of lamellipodia continued as blebbing, which is produced by signals from the actomyosin complex initiated by connexin hemichannel opening and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) release. By applying the connexin hemichannel inhibitor, flufenamic acid, the hindrance of ATP release and calcium transients were analyzed to elucidate this hypothesis

Christianity in Kim Hyun-seung’s poetry

This article attempts to analyze how Kim Hyun-seung’s thoughts about Christianity have changed throughout his poetic works. Considered to be a Puritan-like-figure, Kim Hyun-seung is regarded as the most representative Christian poet in Korea. His works, often written in a solemn mood, are characterized by prayer and devotion to God. In Autumn, the significant season for Kim, he gets immersed in religious contemplation. As a solely wandering bird in his works, the raven symbolizes his religious soul. However, Kim was skeptical about the religion during his middle period due to the limitations of Christianity. His frustration was accompanied by solid solitude with the loss of God, which is in opposition to Kierkegaardian solitude. After suffering from a crisis of death, he returned to Christianity with absolute faith in his final years. His oscillation between the religious faith and the recognition of reality reflects his persistent pursuit of religious ethics, which cannot be fully satiated

Creating Value with Acquisition Based Dynamic Capabilities (ABDC): A Study of Mergers and Acquisitions in the Regulated Energy Industry

Get PDF
M&A research has consistently shown that value is destroyed for a majority of acquirers. Despite initial small positive gains at deal announcement, within a year of closing the transaction a majority of acquirers experience overall negative returns. Nevertheless, the constant pressures to grow leave company leaders few other viable options than pursuing M&A. This ever present cycle of value destruction is of interest to both scholars and practitioners. Of interest is what can be done differently by the acquirer to prevent the inevitable value erosion from occurring. To investigate this question, the author develops an adapted version of the Acquisition Based Dynamic Capabilities (ABDC) framework, a theoretical extension of Dynamic Capability theory. The framework is helpful in identifying what corporate M&A capabilities contribute to value creation through a transaction lifecycle. The adapted ABDC framework provides a means to quantify the differing impacts to value creation among the M&A capabilities of “Selecting and Identifying”, “Transacting and Executing” and “Reconfiguring and Integrating”. The empirical study utilizes 337 regulated energy, public company transactions, closed between 1995 and 2014. This industry is appropriate to study the application of this theory as it benefits from long dated deal timelines and specific milestone events (deal announcement, regulatory approval, financial closing, etc.) providing clear points of delineation for measurement purposes. Performance is measured using weak and semi-strong specifications of shareholder returns with a “golden set” of measures identified. Additionally, the impacts on the ABDC measures from shock waves, bandwagon effects, management traits, financial factors, deal complexity and other relevant factors are all evaluated to test for their impacts on the analyzed transactions. The results suggest that despite many acquirers receiving some positive value accretion from announcement and short-term post-closing returns, larger one year post-close reductions in value eclipse previous gains for most acquirers. The results validate the importance of the Reconfiguring and Integrating (R&I) phase of an acquisition. Comparisons to Top and Poor Performers provide a clear set of recommendations for future energy industry acquirers
