    Gastric juice microbiota in pediatric chronic gastritis that clinically tested positive and negative for Helicobacter pylori

    PurposeHelicobacter pylori (HP) infection is an identified risk factor for pediatric chronic gastritis (PCG), but its impact on gastric juice microbiota (GJM) remains to be further elucidated in PCG. This study aimed to analyze and compare the microbial communities and microbial interactive networks of GJM in PCG that clinically tested positive and negative for HP (HP+ and HP−, respectively).MethodsA total of 45 PCG patients aged from 6 to 16 years were recruited, including 20 HP+ and 25 HP− patients tested by culture and rapid urease test. Gastric juice samples were collected from these PCG patients and subjected to high-throughput amplicon sequencing and subsequent analysis of 16S rRNA genes.ResultsWhile no significant change in alpha diversity, significant differences in beta diversity were observed between HP+ and HP− PCG. At the genus level, Streptococcus, Helicobacter, and Granulicatella were significantly enriched in HP+ PCG, whereas Campylobacter and Absconditabacteriales (SR1) were significantly enriched in HP− PCG. Network analysis showed that Streptococcus was the only genus positively correlated with Helicobacter (r = 0.497) in the GJM network of overall PCG. Moreover, compared to HP− PCG, HP+ PCG showed a reduction in microbial network connectivity in GJM. Netshift analysis identified driver microbes including Streptococcus and other four genera, which substantially contributed to the GJM network transition from HP− PCG to HP+ PCG. Furthermore, Predicted GJM function analysis indicated up-regulated pathways related to the metabolism of nucleotides, carbohydrates, and L-Lysine, the urea cycle, as well as endotoxin peptidoglycan biosynthesis and maturation in HP+ PCG.ConclusionGJM in HP+ PCG exhibited dramatically altered beta diversity, taxonomic structure, and function, with reduced microbial network connectivity, which could be involved in the disease etiology

    Effect of Double-Quenching on the Hardness and Toughness of a Wear-Resistant Steel

    Martensitic/bainitic wear-resistant steels are widely used in civilian industry, where a good combination of strength and toughness is required. In the present study, a double-quenching process was applied and compared to the conventional single-quenching process. The microhardness and ductile–brittle transition temperature were measured, and the microstructure was characterized with scanning electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) technique. It was found that the double-quenching process refined the prior austenite grain size by 43% and simultaneously improved the toughness and hardness. The ductile-to-brittle transition temperature was decreased from −77 °C to −90 °C, and the hardness was increased by 8%. Based on the EBSD data, a detailed analysis of the grain boundary distribution was performed using a recently developed machine learning model. Unlike what was found in previous studies, for the studied wear-resistant steel, the refinement of the prior austenite grain did not increase the block boundary density while increasing the high-angle packet boundary density. As a result, the total density of the high-angle grain boundaries in the double-quenched specimen was not improved compared to the single-quenched specimen. Further inspection suggested that it is the prior austenite grain boundaries and high-angle packet boundaries that contribute to the hardness and toughness, and the key factors that determine their effectiveness are the high misorientation angle between the {110} slip planes and the high slip transmission factor

    First-Principles Study of B Segregation at Austenite Grain Boundary and Its Effect on the Hardenability of Low-Alloy Steels

    Addition of B is beneficial for the hardenability of low-alloy steels and the effect is further improved when combined with the addition of Mo. While experiments demonstrated that Mo reduces the M23(C,B)6 precipitation and indicated an interaction between the alloying elements at the grain boundary, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In the present study, the segregation behavior of B and its interaction with C and Mo at an austenite grain boundary were investigated using first-principles calculations. It was demonstrated that B has a strong tendency to segregate to the grain boundary and leads to a remarkable reduction in grain boundary energy, which is considered to be responsible for the improvement in hardenability. A strong attractive interaction between B and Mo was revealed, consistent with the experimentally observed co-segregation. The partitioning energies of Mo and B from grain boundary into borocarbide were calculated, and it was found that Mo can suppress the precipitation by increasing the partitioning energy of B and destabilizing the M23(C,B)6 phase

    Efficacy of Adjunctive Bioactive Materials in the Treatment of Periodontal Intrabony Defects: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    Objectives. Lots of bioactive materials have been additionally applied for the treatment of periodontal intrabony defect. However, there is dearth of studies to systematically evaluate the supplementary role of them in periodontal regeneration. The goal of this meta-analysis is to evaluate the adjunctive effects of bioactive materials such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP), platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), enamel matrix derivative (EMD), and amnion membrane (AM) on the outcomes of bone grafting treatment for periodontal intrabony defects. Methods. Articles published before December 2017 were searched electronically in three databases (PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Central), with no date or language limits. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the assessment of effectiveness of the four biomaterials in conjunction with demineralized freeze-dried bone allografts (DFDBA) in the treatment of periodontal intrabony defects were enrolled in this meta-analysis. Data were analyzed with STATA 12. Results. Nine studies were included. PRF and PRP significantly improved pocket depth (PD) reduction and clinical attachment loss (CAL) gain. Only PRF exhibited a positive result in recession reduction (RecRed). Only PRP showed a statistically significant increase in bone fill. AM merely gained more CAL. EMD did not improve any clinical outcome. Conclusion. Our data suggest that PRF/PRP could be taken as a preferred adjunct to facilitate periodontal regeneration of intrabony defects

    The good society: defining and measuring wellbeing, between complexity and limits

    Recently, the debate on new measures of wellbeing reached a wide audience especially thanks to the big media’s “ballyhoo”. That debate, very often accompanied by Robert Kennedy’s word (March 18, 1968, speech at Kansas University) has been urged also thanks to many prestigious initiatives, like the commission appointed by French President in 2008 and now known through the chairs’ names (Stiglitz, Sen e Fitoussi). What is never said is that since many years, many researchers all over the world are continuously working on defining concepts and measures of wellbeing. Looking at this movement’s outputs allows us to realize that what is reasserted by the last initiatives can be considered, in many respects, neither really original nor avant-garde (Maggino & Ruviglioni, 2010). In many cases, the debate has been trivialized to the simple concern “what indicator can replace GDP?” As we will see, actually defining what a good society is, and consequently its observation and monitoring, should take into account two important and interrelated concepts: complexity and limit. Concepts of good society: classification attempts. During the history of political philosophy, since Aristotle, the conceptual approaches trying to define what is good society were and are many. It is quite impossible to examine all those definitions and this work has no intention to do that exhaustively. This work aims at providing anyone with interpretative instruments allowing us to orient ourselves among all the emerging proposals and to distinguish between serious and propagandistic ones
