    Merged Search Algorithms for Radio Frequency Identification Anticollision

    Nowadays, the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system enables the control of many devices over an open communication infrastructure ranging from a small home area network to the global Internet. Moreover, a variety of consumer products are tagged with remotely low-cost readable identification electromagnetic tags to replace Bar Codes. Applications such as automatic object tracking, inventory and supply chain management, and Web appliances were adopted for years in many companies. The arbitration algorithm for RFID system is used to arbitrate all the tags to avoid the collision problem with the existence of multiple tags in the interrogation field of a transponder. A splitting algorithm which is called Binary Search Tree (BST) is well known for multitags arbitration. In the current study, a splitting-based schema called Merged Search Tree is proposed to capture identification codes correctly for anticollision. Performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with the original BST according to time and power consumed during the arbitration process. The results show that the proposed model can reduce searching time and power consumed to achieve a better performance arbitration

    Recycling Nonmagnetic Material from De-sulferization Slag as Coarse Aggregate through Cold-Pressing Technique

    Every year there was approximately 500,000 tons of de-sulferization slag generated in Taiwan, but the recycling amount was very slightly. A new approach, the cold-pressing technique that incorporates the principles of the cement chemistry and composite material was developed to recycle innocuous resources (e.g. construction residual soil, granite and lime sludge, and sediment, etc.) as recycling coarse aggregate. Even this technique also has successfully been applied to recycle stainless steel reductive slag with low volume stability. This paper aims to show that using cold-pressing technique can recycle nonmagnetic material from de-sulferization slag as coarse aggregate. Herein the cement-based composite is regarded as concrete. Particularly, the mixture proportions with a low cement amount of 100 kg/m3 and more than 70% (by weight) of nonmagnetic material from de-sulferization were designed. The test results show that the specific gravity of recycling coarse aggregate is about 1.67 in the OD state; the absorption capacity is 27.65%; the dry loose density (i.e. unit weight) is about 1,106 kg/m3; and other characteristics conform to ASTM C33.     Safety-based Injection Strategy for Carbon Dioxide Geological Sequestration in a Deep Saline Aquifer with Complex Sandstone-shale Sequences: A Case Study from Taiwan

    AbstractThe purpose of this study was to decide the best injection strategy for CO2 geo-sequestration in a deep saline aquifer with complex bedded sandstone-shale sequences. The best injection strategy is decided based on the estimates of the safety index (SFI). Numerical simulation method was used in this study. The major conclusions from this study are: (1) Safe trapping mechanisms contribute to a lower risk of CO2 leakage by trapping CO2 as immobile blobs or changing the phase of CO2 from supercritical phase to aqueous, ionic, and mineral phases in the post-injection period. (2) For an aquifer with complex sandstone-shale sequences, the best injection strategy should be decided by the results of risk evaluation and the SFI estimation. (3) The well location affected the injection strategy. The risk of CO2 leakage was lower using a down-dip injection well than an up-dip well. (4) The best strategy for this case study was to use the down-dip well to inject CO2 into the bottom sandstone layer. The SFI for this scenario reached 0.99 at the storage time of 1000 years, which meant that the probability of CO2 leakage occurring was nearly zero

All of these compounds (1-12) were obtained for the first time from the leaves of this plant

    Ventricular divergence correlates with epicardial wavebreaks and predicts ventricular arrhythmia in isolated rabbit hearts during therapeutic hypothermia

    INTRODUCTION: High beat-to-beat morphological variation (divergence) on the ventricular electrogram during programmed ventricular stimulation (PVS) is associated with increased risk of ventricular fibrillation (VF), with unclear mechanisms. We hypothesized that ventricular divergence is associated with epicardial wavebreaks during PVS, and that it predicts VF occurrence. METHOD AND RESULTS: Langendorff-perfused rabbit hearts (n = 10) underwent 30-min therapeutic hypothermia (TH, 30°C), followed by a 20-min treatment with rotigaptide (300 nM), a gap junction modifier. VF inducibility was tested using burst ventricular pacing at the shortest pacing cycle length achieving 1:1 ventricular capture. Pseudo-ECG (p-ECG) and epicardial activation maps were simultaneously recorded for divergence and wavebreaks analysis, respectively. A total of 112 optical and p-ECG recordings (62 at TH, 50 at TH treated with rotigaptide) were analyzed. Adding rotigaptide reduced ventricular divergence, from 0.13±0.10 at TH to 0.09±0.07 (p = 0.018). Similarly, rotigaptide reduced the number of epicardial wavebreaks, from 0.59±0.73 at TH to 0.30±0.49 (p = 0.036). VF inducibility decreased, from 48±31% at TH to 22±32% after rotigaptide infusion (p = 0.032). Linear regression models showed that ventricular divergence correlated with epicardial wavebreaks during TH (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Ventricular divergence correlated with, and might be predictive of epicardial wavebreaks during PVS at TH. Rotigaptide decreased both the ventricular divergence and epicardial wavebreaks, and reduced the probability of pacing-induced VF during TH

    Abnormal glucose tolerance and insulin resistance in polycystic ovary syndrome amongst the Taiwanese population- not correlated with insulin receptor substrate-1 Gly972Arg/Ala513Pro polymorphism

    BACKGROUND: Insulin resistance and glucose dysmetabolism in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are related with the polymorphisms in the genes encoding the insulin receptor substrate (IRS) proteins, especially Gly972Arg/Ala513Pro polymorphism being reported to be associated with type-2 diabetes and PCOS. We intended to assess the prevalence of abnormal glucose tolerance (AGT) and insulin resistance in Taiwanese PCOS women. We also tried to assess whether the particular identity of Gly972Arg/Ala513Pro polymorphic alleles of the IRS-1 gene mutation can be used as an appropriate diagnostic indicator for PCOS. METHODS: We designed a prospective clinical study. Forty-seven Taiwanese Hoklo and Hakka women, diagnosed with PCOS were enrolled in this study as were forty-five healthy Hoklo and Hakka women as the control group. Insulin resistance was evaluated with fasting insulin, fasting glucose/insulin ratio, and homeostasis model assessment index for insulin resistance (HOMA(IR)). The genomic DNA of the subjects was amplified by PCR and digested by restriction fragmented length polymorphism (RFLP) with Bst N1 used for codon 972 and Dra III for codon 513. RESULTS: AGT was found in 46.8% of these PCOS patients and was significantly related to high insulin resistance rather than the low insulin resistance. Those patients with either insulin resistance or AGT comprised the majority of PCOS affected patients (AGT + fasting insulin ≥17: 83%, AGT + glucose/insulin ratio ≥6.5: 85.1%, AGT + HOMA(IR )≥ 2: 87.2%, and AGT + HOMA(IR )≥ 3.8: 72.3%). None of the tested samples revealed any polymorphism due to the absence of any Dra III recognition site or any Bst N1 recognition site in the amplified PCR fragment digested by restriction fragmented length polymorphism. CONCLUSION: There is significantly high prevalence of AGT and insulin resistance in PCOS women, but Gly972Arg and Ala513Pro polymorphic alleles of IRS-1 are rare and are not associated with the elevated risk of PCOS amongst Taiwanese subjects. This is quite different from the similar study in phylogenetically diverged Caucasian subjects

    Intravenous corticosteroid treatment in adult patients with sepsis defined by the Sepsis-3 criteria: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Objectives To summarize the effects of intravenous corticosteroid treatment for sepsis defined by the Sepsis-3 criteria in adult patients. Design Systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods We searched RCTs from PubMed, Embase, ClinicalTrials.gov, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, and International Clinical Trials Registry Platform from inception to July 12th, 2019 and updated on June 28th, 2020. Conference proceedings from relevant societies and the reference lists of previous reviews were manually screened. Abstract or full-text articles were screened by two independent investigators. We included RCTs where (1) the participants had infections and the baseline Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score ≥ 2 (the Sepsis-3 definitions) (2) the intervention involved any intravenous corticosteroids; (3) the control group received placebo or standard of care (4) the outcomes of interest included mortality or clinical recovery. We chose the 28-day mortality as the pre-specified primary outcome and risk ratio (RR) as the effect measure. We followed PRISMA guidelines and chose random-effects models for the pooled analyses. Results This study included 24 RCTs and 19 of them (7,115 participants) reported the 28-day mortality. Pooled analyses showed that intravenous corticosteroid treatment compared to placebo or standard of care was not associated with a lower risk of 28-day mortality (RR, 0.88; 95%CI, 0.73 to 1.05), but with a higher risk of hyperglycemia (RR, 1.16; 95%CI, 1.06 to 1.27). Sensitivity analysis of high-quality studies revealed a similar result for the 28-day mortality (RR, 0.95; 95%CI, 0.86 to 1.05). Conclusions Our findings suggested that intravenous corticosteroids compared to placebo or standard of care may not reduce the 28-day mortality in adult patients with sepsis defined by the Sepsis-3 criteria. Further studies are warranted to clarify the roles of disease severity and treatment timing in the effects of corticosteroid treatment in this population. PROSPERO registration number CRD4201914308

    Continuous Production of Lipase-Catalyzed Biodiesel in a Packed-Bed Reactor: Optimization and Enzyme Reuse Study

    An optimal continuous production of biodiesel by methanolysis of soybean oil in a packed-bed reactor was developed using immobilized lipase (Novozym 435) as a catalyst in a tert-butanol solvent system. Response surface methodology (RSM) and Box-Behnken design were employed to evaluate the effects of reaction temperature, flow rate, and substrate molar ratio on the molar conversion of biodiesel. The results showed that flow rate and temperature have significant effects on the percentage of molar conversion. On the basis of ridge max analysis, the optimum conditions were as follows: flow rate 0.1 mL/min, temperature 52.1°C, and substrate molar ratio 1 : 4. The predicted and experimental values of molar conversion were 83.31 ± 2.07% and 82.81 ± .98%, respectively. Furthermore, the continuous process over 30 days showed no appreciable decrease in the molar conversion. The paper demonstrates the applicability of using immobilized lipase and a packed-bed reactor for continuous biodiesel synthesis

    Surface faceting and reconstruction of ceria nanoparticles

    The surface atomic arrangement of metal oxides determines their physical and chemical properties, and the ability to control and optimize structural parameters is of crucial importance for many applications, in particular in heterogeneous catalysis and photocatalysis. Whereas the structures of macroscopic single crystals can be determined with established methods, for nanoparticles (NPs), this is a challenging task. Herein, we describe the use of CO as a probe molecule to determine the structure of the surfaces exposed by rod-shaped ceria NPs. After calibrating the CO stretching frequencies using results obtained for different ceria single-crystal surfaces, we found that the rod-shaped NPs actually restructure and expose {111} nanofacets. This finding has important consequences for understanding the controversial surface chemistry of these catalytically highly active ceria NPs and paves the way for the predictive, rational design of catalytic materials at the nanoscale.Postprint (author's final draft

    Associations of road traffic noise and its frequency spectrum with prevalent depression in Taichung, Taiwan

    IntroductionExposure to road traffic noise has been reported to be associated with depression in many epidemiological studies, but the association between noise frequency spectrum and depression remains unclear. This community-based study investigated the associations between road traffic noise exposure and its frequency components with prevalent depression.MethodsA total of 3,191 residents living in Taichung who participated in the Taiwan Biobank between 2010 and 2017, were included as study participants. The land-use regression models were used to evaluate individual annual average values of A-weighted equivalent sound level over 24 h (Leq,24h) and particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter &lt;2.5 μm (PM2.5) using the geographic information system. Multiple logistic regression was applied to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) for depression after adjusting for potential risk factors and PM2.5.ResultsAn interquartile range increase in Leq,24h at full frequency (4.7 dBA), 1,000 Hz (5.2 dB), and 2,000 Hz (4.8 dB) was significantly associated with an elevated risk for depression with ORs of 1.62 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.03, 2.55), 1.58 (95% CI: 1.05, 2.37), and 1.58 (95% CI:1.03, 2.43), respectively, by controlling for PM2.5. The high-exposure group (≥3rd quartile median of noise levels) at full frequency, 1,000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz had an increased risk for depression with ORs of 2.65 (95% CI: 1.16–6.05), 2.47 (95% CI: 1.07–5.70), and 2.60 (95% CI: 1.10–6.12), respectively, compared with the reference group (&lt;1st quartile of noise levels) after adjustment for PM2.5. Significant exposure-response trends were observed between the prevalent depression and noise exposure by quartiles at full frequency, 1,000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz (all p &lt; 0.05).ConclusionExposure to road traffic noise may be associated with an increased prevalence of depression, particularly at 1,000 and 2,000 Hz
