The Variable Markov Oracle: Algorithms for Human Gesture Applications
This article introduces the Variable Markov Oracle (VMO) data structure for multivariate time series indexing. VMO can identify repetitive fragments and find sequential similarities between observations. VMO can also be viewed as a combination of online clustering algorithms with variable-order Markov constraints. The authors use VMO for gesture query-by-content and gesture following. A probabilistic interpretation of the VMO query-matching algorithm is proposed to find an analogy to the inference problem in a hidden Markov model (HMM). This probabilistic interpretation extends VMO to be not only a data structure but also a model for time series. Query-by-content experiments were conducted on a gesture database that was recorded using a Kinect 3D camera, showing state-of-the-art performance. The query-by-content experiments' results are compared to previous works using HMM and dynamic time warping. Gesture following is described in the context of an interactive dance environment that aims to integrate human movements with computer-generated graphics to create an augmented reality performance
HI scaling relations of galaxies in the environment of HI-rich and control galaxies observed by the Bluedisk project
Our work is based on the "Bluedisk" project, a program to map the neutral gas
in a sample of 25 HI-rich spirals and a similar number of control galaxies with
the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT). In this paper we focus on the
HI properties of the galaxies in the environment of our targeted galaxies. In
total, we extract 65 galaxies from the WSRT cubes with stellar masses between
and . Most of these galaxies are located on
the same HI mass-size relation and "HI-plane" as normal spiral galaxies. We
find that companions around HI-rich galaxies tend to be HI-rich as well and to
have larger R90,HI/R50,HI. This suggests a scenario of "HI conformity", similar
to the colour conformity found by Weinmann et al. (2006): galaxies tend to
adopt the HI properties of their neighbours. We visually inspect the outliers
from the HI mass-size relation and galaxies which are offset from the HI plane
and find that they show morphological and kinematical signatures of recent
interactions with their environment. We speculate that these outliers have been
disturbed by tidal or ram-pressure stripping processes, or in a few cases, by

Integrated high quality factor lithium niobate microdisk resonators
Lithium Niobate (LN) is an important nonlinear optical material. Here we
demonstrate LN microdisk resonators that feature optical quality factor ~
100,000, realized using robust and scalable fabrication techniques, that
operate over a wide wavelength range spanning visible and near infrared. Using
our resonators, and leveraging LN's large second order optical nonlinearity, we
demonstrate on-chip second harmonic generation with a conversion efficiency of
0.109 W-1
Effect of Al addition on microstructure of AZ91D
Casting is a net shape or near net shape forming process so work-hardening will not be applicable for improving properties of magnesium cast alloys. Grain refinement, solid-solution strengthening, precipitation hardening and specially designed heat treatment are the techniques used to enhance the properties of these alloys. This research focusses on grain refinement of magnesium alloy AZ91D, which is a widely used commercial cast alloy. Recently, Al-B based master alloys have shown potential in grain refining AZ91D. A comparative study of the grain refinement of AZ91D by addition of 0.02wt%B, 0.04wt%B, 0.1wt%B, 0.5wt%B and 1.0wt%B of A1-5B master alloy and equivalent amount of solute element aluminium is described in this paper. An HI View of Galaxy Conformity: HI-rich Environment around HI-excess Galaxies
Using data taken as part of the Bluedisk project we study the connection
between neutral hydrogen (HI) in the environment of spiral galaxies and that in
the galaxies themselves. We measure the total HI mass present in the
environment in a statistical way by studying the distribution of noise peaks in
the HI data cubes obtained for 40 galaxies observed with WSRT. We find that
galaxies whose HI mass fraction is high relative to standard scaling relations
have an excess HI mass in the surrounding environment as well. Gas in the
environment consists of gas clumps which are individually below the detection
limit of our HI data. These clumps may be hosted by small satellite galaxies
and\or be the high-density peaks of a more diffuse gas distribution in the
inter-galactic medium. We interpret this result as an indication for a picture
in which the HI-rich central galaxies accrete gas from an extended gas

The Bloch-Okounkov correlation functions of classical type
Bloch and Okounkov introduced an n-point correlation function on the infinite
wedge space and found an elegant closed formula in terms of theta functions.
This function has connections to Gromov-Witten theory, Hilbert schemes,
symmetric groups, etc, and it can also be interpreted as correlation functions
on integrable gl_\infty-modules of level one. Such gl_\infty-correlation
functions at higher levels were then calculated by Cheng and Wang. In this
paper, generalizing the type A results, we formulate and determine the n-point
correlation functions in the sense of Bloch-Okounkov on integrable modules over
classical Lie subalgebras of gl_\infty of type B,C,D at arbitrary levels. As
byproducts, we obtain new q-dimension formulas for integrable modules of type

Quenching of light hadrons at RHIC in a collisional energy loss scenario
We evaluate the nuclear suppression factor, for light hadrons
by taking into account the collisional energy loss. We show that in the
measured domain of RHIC the elastic process is the dominant mechanism for
