    EFFECTS OF A FOUR-WEEK ELASTIC TUBING TRAINING ON THROWING PERFORMANCE IN YOUTH BASEBALL PLAYERS

    The purpose of this study was to identify the training effect of elastic tubing exercise in youth baseball players on throwing velocity, throwing accuracy and parameters of pitching mechanics. Participants (n=24) aging from 13 to 16 years old were equally and randomly allocated to the training group and control group. A four-week elastic tubing training was conducted in the training group. After four weeks of training, throwing velocity in training group improved significantly. Kinematics changed significantly mainly in parameters of shoulder and elbow. Since the muscular strength did not improve significantly, we may attribute the improvement to the effect of neural adaptation mechanism caused by training

    Joint QoS-Aware Scheduling and Precoding for Massive MIMO Systems via Deep Reinforcement Learning

    The rapid development of mobile networks proliferates the demands of high data rate, low latency, and high-reliability applications for the fifth-generation (5G) and beyond (B5G) mobile networks. Concurrently, the massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) technology is essential to realize the vision and requires coordination with resource management functions for high user experiences. Though conventional cross-layer adaptation algorithms have been developed to schedule and allocate network resources, the complexity of resulting rules is high with diverse quality of service (QoS) requirements and B5G features. In this work, we consider a joint user scheduling, antenna allocation, and precoding problem in a massive MIMO system. Instead of directly assigning resources, such as the number of antennas, the allocation process is transformed into a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based dynamic algorithm selection problem for efficient Markov decision process (MDP) modeling and policy training. Specifically, the proposed utility function integrates QoS requirements and constraints toward a long-term system-wide objective that matches the MDP return. The componentized action structure with action embedding further incorporates the resource management process into the model. Simulations show 7.2% and 12.5% more satisfied users against static algorithm selection and related works under demanding scenarios

    A Way from Renewable Energy Sources to Urban Sustainable Development: Empirical Evidences from Taichung City

    Taiwan pursues economic growth, but the environment also faces major threats. How to balance economic growth and environmental maintenance has become a priority for sustainable development. This study analyzes this issue from a regional perspective. Taichung City is a scaled-down version of Taiwan's economic development. This case study will help to think about how the economy and the environment can achieve a win-win situation in the future. This study analyzes the economic effects of investments in solar systems and then analyzes the differences in CO2 emissions between electricity consumption and electricity sources. As a source of electricity needed to provide economic activities in Taichung, solar power systems will avoid the large-scale CO2 emissions generated by economic growth and achieve a win-win goal of economic growth and environmental maintenance, which will help to achieve the possibility of sustainable urban development.     Separation, characterization and leaching behaviors of heavy metals in contaminated river sediments

    In this research, the sequential extraction test was conducted to understand the characteristic of heavy metals in the sediment. Subsequently, the pH-dependent leaching test, percolation test were subjected to explore the possible leaching of heavy metals and stabilizing mechanism. Finally, based on the resuts of pH dependent test,the acid/chemical washing were applied to predict long-term, leaching characteristics. The results from the sediment characteristic analyses showed that the concentrations of heavy metals (such as Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, and Cr) in river sediments exceeded the upper limit of Sediment Quality Standard of Taiwan, implying further decontamination works should be addressed. Results from the chemical washing (extraction) showed that the heavy metal removal efficiency was good when washed with 2N HCl for 120 minutes; the order of removal efficiency was Ni 90% > Zn 87% > Pb 85% > Cu 83% > Cr 70%. For chelation extraction, the suitable operating condition was achieved with 0.5M Citric Acid after 120 minutes contact; the order of heavy metal ion capturing efficiency was Zn 61% > Ni 54% > Pb 40% > Cu 36% > Cr 24%. Comparing the heavy metal bonding types before and after chemical washing (extraction) showed that some metal ions exist in residual forms in the sediments (Ni, Zn, Cu); however, after the washing process, the heavy metal ions became more exchangeable forms with higher bioavailability.     Soft-tissue Tumor Differentiation Using 3D Power Doppler Ultrasonography With Echo-contrast Medium Injection

    BackgroundWe aimed to evaluate the ability of 3-dimensional power Doppler ultrasonography to differentiate soft-tissue masses from blood flow and vascularization with contrast medium.MethodsTwenty-five patients (mean age, 44.1 years; range, 12-77 years) with a palpable mass were enrolled in this study. Volume data were acquired using linear and convex 3-dimensional probes and contrast medium injected manually by bolus. Data were stored and traced slice by slice for 12 slices. All patients were scanned by the same senior sonologist. The vascular index (VI), flow index (FI), and vascular-flow index (VFI) were automatically calculated after the tumor was completely traced. All tumors were later confirmed by pathology.ResultsThe study included 8 benign (mean, 36.5 mL; range, 2.4-124 mL) and 17 malignant (mean, 319.4 mL; range, 9.9-1,179.6 mL) tumors. Before contrast medium injection, mean VI, FI and VFI were, respectively, 3.22, 32.26 and 1.07 in benign tumors, and 1.97, 29.33 and 0.67 in malignant tumors. After contrast medium injection, they were, respectively, 20.85, 37.33 and 8.52 in benign tumors, and 40.12, 41.21 and 17.77 in malignant tumors. The mean differences between with and without contrast injection for VI, FI and VFI were, respectively, 17.63, 5.07 and 7.45 in benign tumors, and 38.15, 11.88 and 16.55 in malignant tumors. Tumor volume, VI, FI and VFI were not significantly different between benign and malignant tumors before and after echo-contrast medium injection. However, VI, FI and VFI under self-differentiation (differences between with and without contrast injection) were significantly different between malignant and benign tumors.ConclusionThree-dimensional power Doppler ultrasound is a valuable tool for differential diagnosis of soft-tissue tumors, especially with the injection of an echo-contrast medium

    Intraosseous Lipoma of the Proximal Radius with Extraosseous Extension: A Case Report

    Examination of lipomatous tumors with ultrasound (US) is generally limited to the soft tissue component of the mass and cortical contours of the involved bone. We report a patient with an intraosseous lipoma of the proximal radius with extra-osseous extension. US showed a heterogeneous hyperechoic mass lesion (3.5 × 3.0 cm in size) at the radial aspect of the left elbow, with bony cortex interruption. The lesion was associated with increased marginal color flow signals on color Doppler US study. Atypical lipoma or low-grade liposarcoma was diagnosed. The pathologic examination of the lesion demonstrated an abnormal collection of mature adipose tissue consistent with lipoma

    Persistent and multisite homophobic harassment during childhood and adolescence and its association with school difficulties in gay and bisexual men in Taiwan

    Background: Homophobic harassment can compromise mental health of sexual minority youths. Objectives: This study examined the rates of persistent and multisite homophobic harassment and their associations with school difficulties during childhood and adolescence among gay and bisexual men in Taiwan. Methods: Participants were recruited through advertisements on the Facebook, Bulletin Board Systems, and the home pages of health promotion and counseling centers for the gay, lesbian, and bisexual community. The experiences of traditional and cyber harassment based on gender role nonconformity and sexual orientation of 500 gay or bisexual men were examined. The associations of multisite and persistent harassment victimization with school difficulties were evaluated. Results: A total of 239 (47.8%) and 131 (26.2%) participants experienced persistent and multisite harassment victimization, respectively. Harassment victimization was significantly associated with low satisfaction with academic performance in any stage of study. Moreover, the participants who were harassed in senior high schools were more likely to miss classes or be truant than those who were not harassed. The victims of multisite harassment at senior high schools were more likely to miss classes or be truant than those of school-only harassment. Discussion: Prevention and intervention programs are warranted to reduce homophobic harassment in sexual minority youths

    Complex Microbiome in Brain Abscess Revealed by Whole-Genome Culture-Independent and Culture-Based Sequencing.

    Brain abscess is a severe infectious disease with high mortality and mobility. Although culture-based techniques have been widely used for the investigation of microbial composition of brain abscess, these approaches are inherent biased. Recent studies using 16S ribosomal sequencing approaches revealed high complexity of the bacterial community involved in brain abscess but fail to detect fungal and viral composition. In the study, both culture-independent nanopore metagenomic sequencing and culture-based whole-genome sequencing using both the Illumina and the Nanopore platforms were conducted to investigate the microbial composition and genomic characterization in brain abscess. Culture-independent metagenomic sequencing revealed not only a larger taxonomic diversity of bacteria but also the presence of fungi and virus communities. The culture-based whole-genome sequencing identified a novel species in Prevotella and reconstructs a Streptococcus constellatus with a high GC-skew genome. Antibiotic-resistance genes CfxA and ErmF associated with resistance to penicillin and clindamycin were also identified in culture-based and culture-free sequencing. This study implies current understanding of brain abscess need to consider the broader diversity of microorganisms
