NARX-based nonlinear system identification using orthogonal least squares basis hunting
An orthogonal least squares technique for basis hunting (OLS-BH) is proposed to construct sparse radial basis function (RBF) models for NARX-type nonlinear systems. Unlike most of the existing RBF or kernel modelling methods, whichplaces the RBF or kernel centers at the training input data points and use a fixed common variance for all the regressors, the proposed OLS-BH technique tunes the RBF center and diagonal covariance matrix of individual regressor by minimizing the training mean square error. An efficient optimization method isadopted for this basis hunting to select regressors in an orthogonal forward selection procedure. Experimental results obtained using this OLS-BH technique demonstrate that it offers a state-of-the-art method for constructing parsimonious RBF models with excellent generalization performance
Normalized Ricci flow on Riemann surfaces and determinants of Laplacian
In this note we give a simple proof of the fact that the determinant of
Laplace operator in smooth metric over compact Riemann surfaces of arbitrary
genus monotonously grows under the normalized Ricci flow. Together with
results of Hamilton that under the action of the normalized Ricci flow the
smooth metric tends asymptotically to metric of constant curvature for , this leads to a simple proof of Osgood-Phillips-Sarnak theorem stating that
that within the class of smooth metrics with fixed conformal class and fixed
volume the determinant of Laplace operator is maximal on metric of constant

A logical deduction based clause learning algorithm for Boolean satisfiability problems
Clause learning is the key component of modern SAT solvers, while conflict analysis based on the implication graph is the mainstream technology to generate the learnt clauses. Whenever a clause in the clause database is falsified by the current variable assignments, the SAT solver will try to analyze the reason by using different cuts (i.e., the Unique Implication Points) on the implication graph. Those schemes reflect only the conflict on the current search subspace, does not reflect the inherent conflict directly involved in the rest space. In this paper, we propose a new advanced clause learning algorithm based on the conflict analysis and the logical deduction, which reconstructs a linear logical deduction by analyzing the relationship of different decision variables between the backjumping level and the current decision level. The logical deduction result is then added into the clause database as a newly learnt clause. The resulting implementation in Minisat improves the state-of-the-art performance in SAT solving
Design of welded stainless steel I-shaped members subjected to shear
This paper aims to develop design methods for the shear strength of welded stainless steel I-shaped members. The current American AISC Design Guide 27 has been published for Structural Stainless Steel, and it refers to the specification ANSI/AISC 360-16 for structural steel buildings for the shear strength without considering tension field action (TFA). All the available test data on stainless steel plate girders were collected from literatures and employed to assess the provisions in the Design Guide 27, as well as the codified ones in Eurocode 3 Part 1.4. Based on the test results and obtained comparisons, two new proposals for unstiffened webs or webs with transverse stiffeners widely spaced (without TFA), and for interior webs with stiffeners spaced at 3hw or smaller (considering TFA) were developed and presented to match the format of the expressions in ANSI/AISC 360-16 for stainless steel webs under shear. Reliability analysis was further performed to calculate the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) resistance factors determined by the new proposals and to further justify the target factor in AISC Design Guide 27 for structural stainless steel.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Effects of superimposed hydrostatic pressure on fracture in round bars under tension
AbstractThe effect of superimposed hydrostatic pressure on fracture in round bars under tension is studied numerically using the finite element method based on the Gurson damage model. It is demonstrated that while the superimposed hydrostatic pressure has no noticeable effect on necking, it increases the fracture strain due to the fact that a superimposed pressure delays or completely eliminates the nucleation, growth and coalescence of microvoids or microcracks. The experimentally observed transition of the fracture surface, from the cup-cone mode under atmospheric pressure to a slant structure under high pressure, is numerically reproduced. It is numerically proved that the superimposed hydrostatic pressure has no effect on necking for a damage-free round bar under tension
