Nonuniversal finite-size scaling in anisotropic systems
We study the bulk and finite-size critical behavior of the O symmetric
theory with spatially anisotropic interactions of non-cubic symmetry
in dimensions. In such systems of a given universality class,
two-scale factor universality is absent in bulk correlation functions, and
finite-size scaling functions including the Privman-Fisher scaling form of the
free energy, the Binder cumulant ratio and the Casimir amplitude are shown to
be nonuniversal. In particular it is shown that, for anisotropic confined
systems, isotropy cannot be restored by an anisotropic scale transformation.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. E and

Scaling and nonscaling finite-size effects in the Gaussian and the mean spherical model with free boundary conditions
We calculate finite-size effects of the Gaussian model in a L\times \tilde
L^{d-1} box geometry with free boundary conditions in one direction and
periodic boundary conditions in d-1 directions for 2<d<4. We also consider film
geometry (\tilde L \to \infty). Finite-size scaling is found to be valid for
d3 but logarithmic deviations from finite-size scaling are found for
the free energy and energy density at the Gaussian upper borderline dimension
d* =3. The logarithms are related to the vanishing critical exponent
1-\alpha-\nu=(d-3)/2 of the Gaussian surface energy density. The latter has a
cusp-like singularity in d>3 dimensions. We show that these properties are the
origin of nonscaling finite-size effects in the mean spherical model with free
boundary conditions in d>=3 dimensions. At bulk T_c in d=3 dimensions we find
an unexpected non-logarithmic violation of finite-size scaling for the
susceptibility \chi \sim L^3 of the mean spherical model in film geometry
whereas only a logarithmic deviation \chi\sim L^2 \ln L exists for box
geometry. The result for film geometry is explained by the existence of the
lower borderline dimension d_l = 3, as implied by the Mermin-Wagner theorem,
that coincides with the Gaussian upper borderline dimension d*=3. For 3<d<4 we
find a power-law violation of scaling \chi \sim L^{d-1} at bulk T_c for box
geometry and a nonscaling temperature dependence \chi_{surface} \sim \xi^d of
the surface susceptibility above T_c. For 2<d<3 dimensions we show the validity
of universal finite-size scaling for the susceptibility of the mean spherical
model with free boundary conditions for both box and film geometry and
calculate the corresponding universal scaling functions for T>=T_c.Comment: Submitted to Physical Review
Universality of the thermodynamic Casimir effect
Recently a nonuniversal character of the leading spatial behavior of the
thermodynamic Casimir force has been reported [X. S. Chen and V. Dohm, Phys.
Rev. E {\bf 66}, 016102 (2002)]. We reconsider the arguments leading to this
observation and show that there is no such leading nonuniversal term in systems
with short-ranged interactions if one treats properly the effects generated by
a sharp momentum cutoff in the Fourier transform of the interaction potential.
We also conclude that lattice and continuum models then produce results in
mutual agreement independent of the cutoff scheme, contrary to the
aforementioned report. All results are consistent with the {\em universal}
character of the Casimir force in systems with short-ranged interactions. The
effects due to dispersion forces are discussed for systems with periodic or
realistic boundary conditions. In contrast to systems with short-ranged
interactions, for one observes leading finite-size contributions
governed by power laws in due to the subleading long-ranged character of
the interaction, where is the finite system size and is the
correlation length.Comment: 11 pages, revtex, to appear in Phys. Rev. E 68 (2003
The demixing phase instability in the ion-dipole mixture
By considering the variation of the grand potential functional Ω with respect
to small density fluctuations δρα(1) we can determine the phase instability
of a system from the correlation functions. Using the reference hypernetted
chain (RHNC) approximation the correlation functions of an iondipole
mixture have been calculated. With the obtained correlation functions
the phase behaviour of ion-dipole mixtures has been investigated.
Transcriptome analysis of hepatic gene expression and DNA methylation in methionine- and betaine-supplemented geese (Anser cygnoides domesticus)
Dietary methionine (Met) restriction produces a coordinated series of transcriptional responses in the liver that limits growth performance and amino acid metabolism. Methyl donor supplementation with betaine (Bet) may protect against this disturbance and affect the molecular basis of gene regulation. However, a lack of genetic information remains an obstacle to understand the mechanisms underlying the relationship between Met and Bet supplementation and its effects on genetic mechanisms. The goal of this study was to identify the effects of dietary supplementation of Met and Bet on growth performance, transcriptomic gene expression, and epigenetic mechanisms in geese on a Met-deficient diet. One hundred and fifty 21-day-old healthy male Yangzhou geese of similar body weight were randomly distributed into 3 groups with 5 replicates per treatment and 10 geese per replicate: Met-deficient diet (Control), Control+1.2 g/kg of Met (Met), and Control+0.6 g/kg of Bet (Bet). All geese had free access to the diet and water throughout rearing. Our results indicated that supplementation of 1.2 g/kg of Met in Met-deficient feed increased growth performance and plasma homocysteine (HCY) levels, indicating increased transsulfuration flux in the liver. Supplementation of 0.6 g/kg Bet had no apparent sparing effect on Met needs for growth performance in growing geese. The expression of many genes critical for Met metabolism is increased in Met supplementation group. In the Bet-supplemented group, genes involved in energy production and conversion were up-regulated. Dietary supplementation with Bet and Met also altered DNA methylation. We observed changes in the methylation of the LOC106032502 promoter and corresponding changes in mRNA expression. In conclusion, Met and Bet supplementation in geese affects the transcriptional regulatory network and alters the hepatic DNA methylation of LOC106032502
The role of orbital angular momentum in the proton spin
The orbital angular momenta and of up and down quarks in the
proton are estimated as functions of the energy scale as model-independently as
possible, on the basis of Ji's angular momentum sum rule. This analysis
indicates that is large and negative even at low energy scale of
nonperturbative QCD, in contrast to Thomas' similar analysis based on the
refined cloudy bag model. We pursuit the origin of this apparent discrepancy
and suggest that it may have a connection with the fundamental question of how
to define quark orbital angular momenta in QCD.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, 1 table A slightly extended version to appear in

Selective crystallisation of carbamazepine polymorphs on surfaces with differing properties
Surface-induced nucleation of carbamazepine (CBZ) in ethanol was investigated with different surface materials: glass, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and tin. The introduction of foreign surfaces with different areas and surface chemistries into the solution has an impact on the crystal morphology and polymorphic form (Form II or III). With an increase in supersaturation, a higher possibility of crystallisation of CBZ metastable Form II was observed, as expected. Increasing the number of inserts resulted in a direct increase in the surface area available for heterogeneous nucleation. The increase in surface area resulted in the greater possibility of obtaining the metastable Form II of CBZ. The stable Form III preferred to nucleate on tin rather than on glass and PTFE. The results indicate that the two different polymorphs of CBZ can be selectively crystallised out from solution with the aid of a foreign surface. The kinetic mechanism of heterogeneous nucleation of the different polymorphs induced by foreign surfaces was discussed. The potential applications will be used to control and design the crystallisation process
Search for Invisible Decays of and in and
Using a data sample of decays collected with the BES

Compression Deformation Behavior and Processing Map of Pure Copper
To reveal compression deformation behavior of pure copper, the deformation characteristics of pure copper have been investigated by means of compression tests in the temperature range of 400–900°C and strain rate range of 0.001–1 s⁻¹. The results show that the flow stress of pure copper increases with increasing strain rate and decreasing deformation temperature, which is characterized by work-hardening, dynamic recovery, dynamic recrystallization, and secondary work-hardening, etc. The activation energy of hot deformation is associated with deformation temperature and strain rate, and the average activation energy is calculated to be 303.8 kJ/mol. The flow stress prediction model based on GA+BP possess, is in very good agreement with the true stress curve, which is of significance to the guidance of hot working of pure copper. The flow instability occurs in the intermediate strain rate region (0.01–0.1 s⁻¹) base on the analysis of processing map, the high power dissipation correspond to the dynamic recrystallization. Appropriate reducing the deformation temperature or increasing the strain rate is beneficial for the grain refinement in the steady-state region of the processing map
