Mining learning preferences in web-based instruction: Holists vs. Serialists
Web-based instruction programs are used by learners with diverse knowledge, skills and needs. These differences determine their preferences for the design of Web-based instruction programs and ultimately influence learners' success in using them. Cognitive style has been found to significantly affect learners' preferences of web-based instruction programs. However, the majority of previous studies focus on Field Dependence/Independence. Pask's Holist/Serialist dimension has conceptual links with Field Dependence/Independence but it is left mostly unstudied. Therefore, this study focuses on identifying how this dimension of cognitive style affects learner preferences of Web-based instruction programs. A data mining approach is used to illustrate the difference in preferences between Holists and Serialists. The findings show that there are clear differences in regard to content presentation and navigation support. A set of design features were then produced to help designers incorporate cognitive styles into the development of Web-based instruction programs to ensure that they can accommodate learners' different preferences.This work is partially funded by National Science Council, Taiwan, ROC (NSC 98-2511-S-008-012- MY3; NSC 99-

Frontiers of parasitology research in the People's Republic of China : infection, diagnosis, protection and surveillance
ABSTRACT: Control and eventual elimination of human parasitic diseases in the People's Republic of China (P.R. China) requires novel approaches, particularly in the areas of diagnostics, mathematical modelling, monitoring, evaluation, surveillance and public health response. A comprehensive effort, involving the collaboration of 188 scientists (<85% from P.R. China) from 48 different institutions and universities (80% from P.R. China), covers this collection of 29 articles published in Parasites & Vectors. The research mainly stems from a research project entitled 'Surveillance and diagnostic tools for major parasitic diseases in P.R. China' (grant no. 2008ZX10004-011) and highlights the frontiers of research in parasitology. The majority of articles in this thematic series deals with the most important parasitic diseases in P.R. China, emphasizing Schistosoma japonicum, Plasmodium vivax and Clonorchis sinensis plus some parasites of emerging importance such as Angiostrongylus cantonensis. Significant achievements have been made through the collaborative research programme in the following three fields: (i) development of control strategies for the national control programme; (ii) updating the surveillance data of parasitic infections both in human and animals; and (iii) improvement of existing, and development of novel, diagnostic tools to detect parasitic infections. The progress is considerable and warrants broad validation efforts. Combined with the development of improved tools for diagnosis and surveillance, integrated and multi-pronged control strategies now pave the way for elimination of parasitic diseases in P.R. China. Experiences and lessons learned can stimulate control and elimination efforts of parasitic diseases in other parts of the world
On arithmetic detection of grey pulses with application to Hawking radiation
Micron-sized black holes do not necessarily have a constant horizon
temperature distribution. The black hole remote-sensing problem means to find
out the `surface' temperature distribution of a small black hole from the
spectral measurement of its (Hawking) grey pulse. This problem has been
previously considered by Rosu, who used Chen's modified Moebius inverse
transform. Here, we hint on a Ramanujan generalization of Chen's modified
Moebius inverse transform that may be considered as a special wavelet
processing of the remote-sensed grey signal coming from a black hole or any

Superconductivity and Phase Diagram in (LiFe)OHFeSeS
A series of (LiFe)OHFeSeS (0 x 1)
samples were successfully synthesized via hydrothermal reaction method and the
phase diagram is established. Magnetic susceptibility suggests that an
antiferromagnetism arising from (LiFe)OH layers coexists with
superconductivity, and the antiferromagnetic transition temperature nearly
remains constant for various S doping levels. In addition, the lattice
parameters of the both a and c axes decrease and the superconducting transition
temperature T is gradually suppressed with the substitution of S for Se,
and eventually superconductivity vanishes at = 0.90. The decrease of T
could be attributed to the effect of chemical pressure induced by the smaller
ionic size of S relative to that of Se, being consistent with the effect of
hydrostatic pressure on (LiFe)OHFeSe. But the detailed
investigation on the relationships between and the crystallographic
facts suggests a very different dependence of on anion height from
the Fe2 layer or -Fe2- angle from those in FeAs-based superconductors.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
Isolated photon and photon+jet production at NNLO QCD accuracy and the ratio
We discuss different approaches to photon isolation in fixed-order
calculations and present a new next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD
calculation of , the ratio of the inclusive isolated photon
cross section at 8 TeV and 13 TeV, differential in the photon transverse

Local spin polarisation of electrons in Rashba semiconductor nanowires: effects of the bound state
The local spin polarisation (LSP) of electrons in two typical semiconductor
nanowires under the modulation of Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI) is
investigated theoretically. The influence of both the SOI- and
structure-induced bound states on the LSP is taken into account via the
spin-resolved lattice Green function method. It is discovered that high
spin-density islands with alternative signs of polarisation are formed inside
the nanowires due to the interaction between the bound states and the Rashba
effective magnetic field. Further study shows that the spin-density islands
caused by the structure-induced bound state exhibit a strong robustness against
disorder. These findings may provide an efficient way to create local magnetic
moments and store information in semiconductors.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
Maximal Acceleration Corrections to the Lamb Shift of Muonic Hydrogen
The maximal acceleration corrections to the Lamb shift of muonic hydrogen are
calculated by using the relativistic Dirac wave functions. The correction for
the transition is meV and is higher than the accuracy of
present QED calculations and of the expected accuracy of experiments in
