    CEBus demonstration system

    A CEBus demonstration system is constructed and applied to aspects of home automation security. Two M68HC16Z1 evaluation boards are used as CEBus nodes. Two CEBus spread spectrum power line modems (SSC PLCEMS) interconnect the nodes. An SSC PLCEMS handles all spread spectrum signal generation and reception. The application programs in the two boards are written in assembly language based upon CAL (Common Application Language), a CEBus standard. The standard CEBus frame format and FCS (Frame Check Sequence) are implemented by software in the Data Link Layer. Encoding and decoding binary information into UST format are implemented in the Physical Layer. The system responsiveness of 30 millisec was measured experimentally for a case with 3 information bytes. The noise sensitivity was measured experimentally with a straight 3-wire connection of the modems with and without AC power. The distorted AC line caused a packet error rate of 2%, a higher rate than obtained by injecting broadband random noise

    Variations of Physiological Parameters and HSP70 and HSP90 Polymorphisms in Water Buffaloes in Taiwan During Cool and Warm Season

    Background: This study examined the physiological parameters of water buffaloes in Taiwan in the cool (February) and warm (August) seasons of 2020 and 2021. Methods: Data was collected for a study in February, August 2020, and 2021. The ambitious temperature, humidity, water buffaloes’ rectal temperature (RT), and respiratory rate (RR) were recorded. The plasma expression levels of heat-shock protein (HSP)70 and HSP90 were examined using an ELISA kit. Furthermore, the HSP70 and HSP90 fragment genetic sequence variations were analyzed using the PCR method and MEGA6 software. Results: The results revealed that in the warm season, the rectal temperature (RT), respiratory rate (RR), and heat tolerance coefficient (HTC) were significantly higher compared to the cool season (all P < 0.05). Additionally, the temperature-humidity index (THI) had moderate to high correlations with RT (0.518), RR (0.744), and HTC (0.757). Plasma HSP70 expression levels were higher in the warm season than in the cool season (P < 0.05). The genetic sequences of HSP70 and HSP90 fragments were compared, and five single-nucleotide variation (SNV) sites were identified. However, each genotype showed no significant physiological difference between the cool and warm seasons. Conclusion: Temperature and humidity changes in Taiwan had a significant correlation with the physical condition of water buffaloes. This information can be valuable in improving the living conditions of these animals, leading to better animal welfare. Additionally, the HSP70 and HSP90 gene variations in water buffaloes in Taiwan could be used as a reference for future research on breeding and identifying molecular markers

    Distraction or Connection? An Investigation of Social Media Use at Work

    The use of social media in the workplace is controversial. In order to develop a good understanding of social media use at work, this study examines the effects of social media use from both positive and negative sides. Based on two-factor theory, this study proposes that social media use at work engenders distraction and perceived relatedness, which in turn influence job performance. This study further draws on resource matching theory to posit that the perceptual load of the job moderates the effects of social media use at work on distraction and perceived relatedness. A survey will be conducted to collect data and test the research hypotheses. In theoretical terms, this study is expected to contribute to information systems research by investigating both positive and negative outcomes of social media usage. In practical terms, this study sheds light on the usage and management of social media in the workplace

    Wavelength tunable spectral compression in a dispersion-increasing fiber

    Adiabatic soliton spectral compression in a dispersion-increasing fiber is demonstrated both numerically and experimentally. We show a positively-chirped pulse provides better spectral compression in a dispersion-increasing fiber with large anomalous dispersion ramp. An experimental spectral compression ratio of 15.5 is obtained using 350 fs positively-chirped input pulse centered at 1.5 um. The idea is that the exact solutions of the auxiliary ordinary differential equation are derived by using exp-function method, and then the exact solutions of the nonlinear evolution equations are derived with aid of the auxiliary ordinary differential equation. As examples, the classical KdV equation, Boussinesq equation, (3+1)-dimensional Jimbo–Miwa equation and Benjamin–Bona–Mahony equation are discussed and the exact solutions are derived

    Designing the Expressiveness of Point Lights for Bridging Human-IoT System Communications

    In the last decade, the digital devices and intelligent systems are becoming popular in people’s everyday lives. Many machines could communicate and collaborate as a system to provide various services. However, they seldom provide sufficient feed forwards or feedbacks to help users understand current states and aware what it is about to act. In this study, we explored the possibilities of expressiveness with the point lights embedded on ubiquitous devices. By applying the findings from related works and animation principles, we created nine basic individual patterns and composed 12 designs of group behaviors. We then conducted a survey with 69 participants to rate their expressiveness regarding nine vocabularies of the human-system communication. The results show that single light behavior and the performative group light behavior could help to convey specific state information for intuitive communication. At the individual light level, for instance, the fade in light behavior can indicate changes in status; rapid blinking can indicate important information. At the group level, the two designs developed in this study, leading and simultaneous type also can initiate human interactions and represent the machine-to-machine conversations taken place in the system, respectively

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To better search for potential markers for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) invasion and metastasis, proteomic approach was applied to identify potential metastasis biomarkers associated with HCC.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Membrane proteins were extracted from MHCC97L and HCCLM9 cells, with a similar genetic background and remarkably different metastasis potential, and compared by SDS-PAGE and identified by ESI-MS/MS. The results were further validated by western blot analysis, immunohistochemistry (IHC) of tumor tissues from HCCLM9- and MHCC97L-nude mice, and clinical specimens.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Membrane proteins were extracted from MHCC97L and HCCLM9 cell and compared by SDS-PAGE analyses. A total of 14 differentially expressed proteins were identified by ESI-MS/MS. Coronin-1C, a promising candidate, was found to be overexpressed in HCCLM9 cells as compared with MHCC97L cells, and validated by western blot and IHC from both nude mice tumor tissues and clinical specimens. Coronin-1C level showed an abrupt upsurge when pulmonary metastasis occurred. Increasing coronin-1C expression was found in liver cancer tissues of HCCLM9-nude mice with spontaneous pulmonary metastasis. IHC study on human HCC specimens revealed that more patients in the higher coronin-1C group had overt larger tumor and more advanced stage.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Coronin-1C could be a candidate biomarker to predict HCC invasive behavior.</p
