Fabrication of multianalyte CeO2 nanograin electrolyte–insulator–semiconductor biosensors by using CF4 plasma treatment

    Get PDF
Multianalyte CeO2 biosensors have been demonstrated to detect pH, glucose, and urine concentrations. To enhance the multianalyte sensing capability of these biosensors, CF4 plasma treatment was applied to create nanograin structures on the CeO2 membrane surface and thereby increase the contact surface area. Multiple material analyses indicated that crystallization or grainization caused by the incorporation of flourine atoms during plasma treatment might be related to the formation of the nanograins. Because of the changes in surface morphology and crystalline structures, the multianalyte sensing performance was considerably enhanced. Multianalyte CeO2 nanograin electrolyte–insulator–semiconductor biosensors exhibit potential for use in future biomedical sensing device applications

Introduction: Aging leads to declines of functional fitness and regular exercise has been recognized to be beneficial for keeping health and preventing degenerative diseases in older adults. Limited evidences connect the relationships among detraining, functional fitness, immunosenescence, and vascular integrity in aged individuals. Thus, the aims of this study was to inspect: How training and detraining influence functional fitness, mobilization of circulating leukocytes and lymphocyte subsets? Method: Twenty-two female volunteers aged 50 to 65 years were recruited as participants in this study. Participants were assigned into training group (TG, n=13) and control group (CG, n=9). The participants in TG were asked to attend exercise program, including aerobic exercise at 70% HRR for 60 min twice per week and resistance training at 60-70% 1RM, 3 sets and 9 exercises for 60 min per week for 16 weeks and subsequently avoid exercise for 6 weeks to investigate detraining effects. CG were asked to stay in their regular lifestyles. A six-items measurement of functional fitness and resting (at fasting status) venous blood samples were collected at before training program (Pre-training), 8th week of training (Mid-training), after training program (Post-training), and 6th week of detraining 6 weeks (Detraining). Blood cell counts (WBC, RBC, HCT, LYM) were measured using an automated cell counter and lymphocyte subsets (CD4, CD8, CD19, CD56) were analyzed by flow cytometry. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistic, mixed two-factors (time × group) measures ANOVA or ACOVA and the significance was set at pResult: Functional fitness of TG was not significantly improved following the training program although it was significantly better than CG in Pre-training. Blood cell counts were not changed and all in normal range. A significant difference in CD19 counts were observed between TG and CG (71.23±32.05 vs. 116.45±67.95 103/mL) in Post-training. CD19 counts in TG were increased at Detraining compared with Mid-training and Post-training (138.08±50.22 vs. 74.92±31.20, 71.23±32.05 103/mL). No alterations in quantity and percentage of CD4, CD8, and CD56 were observed in this study. Conclusion: Findings of this study suggest that both a 16-week moderate exercise program and a 6-week detraining did not significantly change the functional fitness and lymphocyte subsets in postmenopausal females

The aim of this study was to investigate a three-year development in BMI and physical fitness of schoolchildren aged 12-16 years with extreme weight status. Taiwan Physical Fitness Test Battery, assessing aerobic fitness (1600-meter walk/run test), power (standing long jump), muscular endurance (sit-up), and flexibility (sit-and-reach) in 16,945 boys, was implemented in September from the year 2006 till 2008. Overweight and underweight were defined by the baseline BMI data values that fall within the highest and lowest 5% of their age population, whereas the BMI data values that fall within one standard deviation of the mean was considered “normal” in this study. The results showed that BMI of schoolchildren in 2006 was ~2–3 kg/m2 above the national average reported in 1993. All physical fitness components in the overweight group were substantially poorer than those in the normal group. Yet, these fitness parameters were improved over the three years in all groups. BMI in the underweight group increased at a faster rate than that in the normal and overweight groups. No difference was found in the jumping distance between the underweight and normal groups. Aerobic fitness in the underweight group was superior but flexibility and muscular endurance were slightly lower than those in the normal group. BMI of Taiwan schoolchildren increased substantially from 1993 to 2006 but leveled off from 2006 to 2008. Underweight schoolchildren during the growing period should not a priori be considered as physically weaker or unfit individuals.

GL-CLeF: A Global-Local Contrastive Learning Framework for Cross-lingual Spoken Language Understanding

Due to high data demands of current methods, attention to zero-shot cross-lingual spoken language understanding (SLU) has grown, as such approaches greatly reduce human annotation effort. However, existing models solely rely on shared parameters, which can only perform implicit alignment across languages. We present Global--Local Contrastive Learning Framework (GL-CLeF) to address this shortcoming. Specifically, we employ contrastive learning, leveraging bilingual dictionaries to construct multilingual views of the same utterance, then encourage their representations to be more similar than negative example pairs, which achieves to explicitly aligned representations of similar sentences across languages. In addition, a key step in GL-CLeF is a proposed Local and Global component, which achieves a fine-grained cross-lingual transfer (i.e., sentence-level Local intent transfer, token-level Local slot transfer, and semantic-level Global transfer across intent and slot). Experiments on MultiATIS++ show that GL-CLeF achieves the best performance and successfully pulls representations of similar sentences across languages closer.Comment: Accepted at ACL2022 Main Conferenc

End-to-end task-oriented dialogue (EToD) can directly generate responses in an end-to-end fashion without modular training, which attracts escalating popularity. The advancement of deep neural networks, especially the successful use of large pre-trained models, has further led to significant progress in EToD research in recent years. In this paper, we present a thorough review and provide a unified perspective to summarize existing approaches as well as recent trends to advance the development of EToD research. The contributions of this paper can be summarized: (1) \textbf{\textit{First survey}}: to our knowledge, we take the first step to present a thorough survey of this research field; (2) \textbf{\textit{New taxonomy}}: we first introduce a unified perspective for EToD, including (i) \textit{Modularly EToD} and (ii) \textit{Fully EToD}; (3) \textbf{\textit{New Frontiers}}: we discuss some potential frontier areas as well as the corresponding challenges, hoping to spur breakthrough research in EToD field; (4) \textbf{\textit{Abundant resources}}: we build a public website\footnote{We collect the related papers, baseline projects, and leaderboards for the community at \url{https://etods.net/}.}, where EToD researchers could directly access the recent progress. We hope this work can serve as a thorough reference for the EToD research community.Comment: Accepted at EMNLP202

Apoptosis Induction in Primary Human Colorectal Cancer Cell Lines and Retarded Tumor Growth in SCID Mice by Sulforaphane

We have investigated the anticancer effects of the dietary isothiocyanate sulforaphane (SFN) on colorectal cancer (CRC), using primary cancer cells lines isolated from five Taiwanese colorectal cancer patients as the model for colorectal cancer. SFN-treated cells accumulated in metaphase (SFN 6.25 μM) and subG1 (SFN 12.5 and 25 μM) as determined by flow cytometry. In addition, treated cells showed nuclear apoptotic morphology that coincided with an activation of caspase-3, and loss of mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm). Incubations at higher SFN doses (12.5 and 25 μM) resulted in cleavage of procaspase-3 and elevated caspase-2, -3, -8, and -9 activity, suggesting that the induction of apoptosis and the sulforaphane-induced mitosis delay at the lower dose are independently regulated. Daily SFN s.c. injections (400 micromol/kg/d for 3 weeks) in severe combined immunodeficient mice with primary human CRC (CP1 to CP5) s.c. tumors resulted in a decrease of mean tumor weight by 70% compared with vehicle-treated controls. Our findings suggest that, in addition to the known effects on cancer prevention, sulforaphane may have antitumor activity in established colorectal cancer
