Selective interlayer ferromagnetic coupling between the Cu spins in YBa Cu O grown on top of La Ca MnO
Studies to date on ferromagnet/d-wave superconductor heterostructures focus
mainly on the effects at or near the interfaces while the response of bulk
properties to heterostructuring is overlooked. Here we use resonant soft x-ray
scattering spectroscopy to reveal a novel c-axis ferromagnetic coupling between
the in-plane Cu spins in YBa Cu O (YBCO) superconductor when it
is grown on top of ferromagnetic La Ca MnO (LCMO) manganite
layer. This coupling, present in both normal and superconducting states of
YBCO, is sensitive to the interfacial termination such that it is only observed
in bilayers with MnO_2but not with La Ca interfacial
termination. Such contrasting behaviors, we propose, are due to distinct
energetic of CuO chain and CuO plane at the La Ca and
MnO terminated interfaces respectively, therefore influencing the transfer
of spin-polarized electrons from manganite to cuprate differently. Our findings
suggest that the superconducting/ferromagnetic bilayers with proper interfacial
engineering can be good candidates for searching the theorized
Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state in cuprates and studying the
competing quantum orders in highly correlated electron systems.Comment: Please note the change of the title. Text might be slightly different

Measurement-based quantum computation in a 2D phase of matter
Recently it has been shown that the non-local correlations needed for
measurement based quantum computation (MBQC) can be revealed in the ground
state of the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) model involving nearest
neighbor spin-3/2 interactions on a honeycomb lattice. This state is not
singular but resides in the disordered phase of ground states of a large family
of Hamiltonians characterized by short-range-correlated valence bond solid
states. By applying local filtering and adaptive single particle measurements
we show that most states in the disordered phase can be reduced to a graph of
correlated qubits that is a scalable resource for MBQC. At the transition
between the disordered and Neel ordered phases we find a transition from
universal to non-universal states as witnessed by the scaling of percolation in
the reduced graph state.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, comments welcome. v2: published versio
Charged black rings in supergravity with a single non-zero gauge field
General charged black ring solution with two angular momenta, a charge and a
dipole charge is found by the inverse scattering method. The solution is
presented in a relatively concise form in which its symmetries are manifest.
The regularity conditions are found and the physical characteristics of the
regular solution are expressed via its parameters.Comment: Misprints corrected, references added, JHEP forma

Simulated 50 % radiation dose reduction in coronary CT angiography using adaptive iterative dose reduction in three-dimensions (AIDR3D)
To compare the image quality of coronary CT angiography (CTA) studies between standard filtered back projection (FBP) and adaptive iterative dose reduction in three-dimensions (AIDR3D) reconstruction using CT noise additional software to simulate reduced radiation exposure. Images from 93 consecutive clinical coronary CTA studies were processed utilizing standard FBP, FBP with 50 % simulated dose reduction (FBP50 %), and AIDR3D with simulated 50 % dose reduction (AIDR50 %). Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were measured within 5 regions-of-interest, and image quality for each reconstruction strategy was assessed by two independent readers using a 4-point scale. Compared to FBP, the SNR measured from the AIDR50 % images was similar or higher (airway: 38.3 ± 12.7 vs. 38.5 ± 14.5, p = 0.81, fat: 5.5 ± 1.9 vs. 5.4 ± 2.0, p = 0.20, muscle: 3.2 ± 1.2 vs. 3.1 ± 1.3, p = 0.38, aorta: 22.6 ± 9.4 vs. 20.2 ± 9.7, p < 0.0001, liver: 2.7 ± 1.0 vs. 2.3 ± 1.1, p < 0.0001), while the SNR of the FBP50 % images were all lower (p values < 0.0001). The CNR measured from AIDR50 % images was also higher than that from the FBP images for the aorta relative to muscle (20.5 ± 9.0 vs. 18.3 ± 9.2, p < 0.0001). The interobserver agreement in the image quality score was excellent (κ = 0.82). The quality score was significantly higher for the AIDR50 % images compared to the FBP images (3.6 ± 0.6 vs. 3.3 ± 0.7, p = 0.004). Simulated radiation dose reduction applied to clinical coronary CTA images suggests that a 50 % reduction in radiation dose can be achieved with adaptive iterative dose reduction software with image quality that is at least comparable to images acquired at standard radiation exposure and reconstructed with filtered back projection
Haemophilus influenzae type b reemergence after combination immunization
An increase in Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) in
British children has been linked to the widespread use of a
diphtheria/tetanus/acellular pertussis combination vaccine
(DTaP-Hib). We measured anti-polyribosyl-ribitol phos-
phate antibody concentration and avidity before and after a
Hib booster in 176 children 2–4 years of age who had
received 3 doses of DTP-Hib (either DT whole cell pertus-
sis-Hib or DTaP-Hib) combination vaccine in infancy. We
also measured pharyngeal carriage of Hib. Antibody con-
centrations before and avidity indices after vaccination
were low (geometric mean concentration 0.46μg/mL, 95%
confidence interval [CI] 0.36–0.58; geometric mean avidity
index 0.16, 95% CI 0.14–0.18) and inversely related to the
number of previous doses of DTaP-Hib (p = 0.02 and
p<0.001, respectively). Hib was found in 2.1% (95% CI
0.7%–6.0%) of study participants. Our data support an
association between DTaP-Hib vaccine combinations and
clinical Hib disease through an effect on antibody concen-
tration and avidit
Skin sympathetic nerve activity precedes the onset and termination of paroxysmal atrial tachycardia and fibrillation
Background
Skin sympathetic nerve activity (SKNA) is useful for estimating sympathetic tone in humans.
Objective
The purpose of this study was to test the hypotheses that (1) increased SKNA is associated with the onset and termination of paroxysmal atrial tachycardia (AT) and atrial fibrillation (AF) and (2) sinoatrial node response to SKNA is reduced in patients with more frequent AT or AF episodes.
Methods
SKNA and electrocardiogram were recorded in 11 patients (4 men and 7 women; average age 66 ± 10 years), including 3 patients with AT (11 ± 18 episodes per patient) and 8 patients with AF (24 ± 26 episodes per patient).
Results
The average SKNA (aSKNA) 10 seconds before AT onset was 1.07 ± 0.10 μV and 10 seconds after termination was 1.27 ± 0.10 μV; both were significantly (P = .032 and P < .0001) higher than that during sinus rhythm (0.97 ± 0.09 μV). The aSKNA 10 seconds before AF onset was 1.34 ± 0.07 μV and 10 seconds after termination was 1.31 ± 0.07 μV; both were significantly (P < .0001) higher than that during sinus rhythm (1.04 ± 0.07 μV). The aSKNA before onset (P < .0001) and after termination (P = .0011) was higher in AF than in AT. The sinus rate correlated (P < .0001) with aSKNA in each patient (average r = 0.74; 95% confidence interval 0.65–0.84). The r value in each patient negatively correlated with the number of AT and AF episodes (r = −0.6493; 95% confidence interval −0.8990 to −0.08073; P = .0306).
Conclusion
Increased SKNA was observed both at the onset and termination of AT and AF. Patients with more frequent AT and AF episodes had a weak correlation between sinus rate and aSKNA, suggesting sinoatrial node remodeling by tachycardia
Automatically extracting functionally equivalent proteins from SwissProt
In summary, FOSTA provides an automated analysis of annotations in UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot to enable groups of proteins already annotated as functionally equivalent, to be extracted. Our results demonstrate that the vast majority of UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot functional annotations are of high quality, and that FOSTA can interpret annotations successfully. Where FOSTA is not successful, we are able to highlight inconsistencies in UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot annotation. Most of these would have presented equal difficulties for manual interpretation of annotations. We discuss limitations and possible future extensions to FOSTA, and recommend changes to the UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot format, which would facilitate text-mining of UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot
Microscopic Realization of the Kerr/CFT Correspondence
Supersymmetric M/string compactifications to five dimensions contain BPS
black string solutions with magnetic graviphoton charge P and near-horizon
geometries which are quotients of AdS_3 x S^2. The holographic duals are
typically known 2D CFTs with central charges c_L=c_R=6P^3 for large P. These
same 5D compactifications also contain non-BPS but extreme Kerr-Newman black
hole solutions with SU(2)_L spin J_L and electric graviphoton charge Q obeying
Q^3 \leq J_L^2. It is shown that in the maximally charged limit Q^3 -> J_L^2,
the near-horizon geometry coincides precisely with the right-moving temperature
T_R=0 limit of the black string with magnetic charge P=J_L^{1/3}. The known
dual of the latter is identified as the c_L=c_R=6J_L CFT predicted by the
Kerr/CFT correspondence. Moreover, at linear order away from maximality, one
finds a T_R \neq 0 quotient of the AdS_3 factor of the black string solution
and the associated thermal CFT entropy reproduces the linearly sub-maximal
Kerr-Newman entropy. Beyond linear order, for general Q^3<J_L^2, one has a
finite-temperature quotient of a warped deformation of the magnetic string
geometry. The corresponding dual deformation of the magnetic string CFT
potentially supplies, for the general case, the c_L=c_R=6J_L CFT predicted by
Kerr/CFT.Comment: 18 pages, no figure
Magnetic Field Effects in the Pseudogap Phase: A Competing Energy Gap Scenario for Precursor Superconductivity
We study the sensitivity of T_c and T^* to low fields, H, within the
pseudogap state using a BCS-based approach extended to arbitrary coupling. We
find that T^* and T_c, which are of the same superconducting origin, have very
different H dependences. This is due to the pseudogap, \Delta_{pg}, which is
present at the latter, but not former temperature. Our results for the
coherence length \xi fit well with existing experiments. We predict that very
near the insulator \xi will rapidly increase.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, RevTe
Timelike Boundary Liouville Theory
The timelike boundary Liouville (TBL) conformal field theory consisting of a
negative norm boson with an exponential boundary interaction is considered. TBL
and its close cousin, a positive norm boson with a non-hermitian boundary
interaction, arise in the description of the accumulation point of
minimal models, as the worldsheet description of open string tachyon
condensation in string theory and in scaling limits of superconductors with
line defects. Bulk correlators are shown to be exactly soluble. In contrast,
due to OPE singularities near the boundary interaction, the computation of
boundary correlators is a challenging problem which we address but do not fully
solve. Analytic continuation from the known correlators of spatial boundary
Liouville to TBL encounters an infinite accumulation of poles and zeros. A
particular contour prescription is proposed which cancels the poles against the
zeros in the boundary correlator d(\o) of two operators of weight \o^2 and
yields a finite result. A general relation is proposed between two-point CFT
correlators and stringy Bogolubov coefficients, according to which the
magnitude of d(\o) determines the rate of open string pair creation during
tachyon condensation. The rate so obtained agrees at large \o with a
minisuperspace analysis of previous work. It is suggested that the mathematical
ambiguity arising in the prescription for analytic continuation of the
correlators corresponds to the physical ambiguity in the choice of open string
modes and vacua in a time dependent background.Comment: 28 pages, 1 figure, v2 reference and acknowledgement adde
