A Method of Measuring the Quantity of X-Radiation
Experimentation at South Dakota State College to determine the mutations in plant life resulting from the exposure of the seeds to X-radiation, made it desirable to be able to measure the quantity of radiation to which the seeds were exposed. Seeds being used in these tests are sorghums, castor beans, sunflowers, and safflowers. The tests will require a group of successive plant generations over a period of years. The purpose of this paper is to present a method by which the quantity of X-radiation, in roentgen units, can be measured
Inherent Power of the Judiciary over Admittance to the Bar
Admission to the bar is a matter of increasing concern to the state. As its economic life, its social life, become more intricate, the legal rules governing social conduct and their administration through courts of justice become more complicated, so that adequately trained lawyers are increasingly necessary to the competent exercise of their function as officers of the courts admnistering justice. Too, overcrowding of the bar increases the concern. As the relative number of lawyers increases, the temptation to lawyers to violate the public trust reposed in them increases, and their violations of legal ethics work generally to the detriment of society and specifically to the interference with administration of justice and to the disgrace of their profession. Higher standards for admission to the bar would result in a more competently trained bar, and would relieve considerably the overcrowded condition by admitting as lawyers, officers of the court, only those well prepared to assist the courts in their work. There is strong sentiment that favors (and justly so) democracy of the bar. But surely the thinking adherents of that democracy would favor a raising of standards directed to the benefit of the general public and the profession. The American Bar Association believes in that democracy, but firmly maintains that it should not be used as a cloak to excuse inadequate legal training

Cinema and the ‘City of the Mind’: Using Motion Pictures to Explore Human-Environment Transactions in Planning Education.
This chapter examines the pedagogical use of film in planning education, specifically
as it relates to the teaching of environmental psychology. The intersections
between film, theory, and pedagogy are important because film is herein invested
with the power to represent – and more importantly interpret and challenge – our
understandings of human-environment transactions. I further suggest that planning
students may be undereducated in the nature of these transactions and that the
medium of the motion picture – combined with the neglected body of theory
represented by environmental psychology – offers an excellent synthesis to address

Adolescent Loneliness and Health in Early Adulthood
The health consequence of loneliness in the early life course is an understudied topic in the sociological literature. Using data from Waves 1–3 of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, we examine pre-disease pathways in the relationship between adolescent loneliness and early adult health. Our results indicate that loneliness during adolescence is associated with diagnosed depression, poorer adult self-rated health, and metabolic risk factors related to cardiovascular disease. High depressive symptoms and parent support are important pathways through which the health consequences of loneliness are exacerbated or offset. There is also evidence that lonely youth remain at higher risk for experiencing adult depression and poor self-rated health even in the presence of equivalent levels of parental support relative to non-lonely adolescents. Furthermore, lonely adolescent females are more vulnerable to reporting poor adult self-rated health and being overweight or obese in adulthood. In sum, our study demonstrates the importance of adolescent loneliness for elevating the risk of poor health outcomes in adulthood

The differential contributions of teen drinking homophily to new and existing friendships: An empirical assessment of assortative and proximity selection mechanisms
Alcohol use is pervasive in adolescence. Though most research is concerned with how friends influence drinking, alcohol is also important for connecting teens to one another. Prior studies have not distinguished between new friendship creation, and existing friendship durability, however. We argue that accounting for distinctions in creation–durability processes is critical for understanding the selection mechanisms drawing drinkers into homophilous friendships, and the social integration that results. In order to address these issues, we applied stochastic actor based models of network dynamics to National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health data. Adolescents only modestly prefer new friendships with others who drinker similarly, but greatly prefer friends who indirectly connect them to homophilous drinkers. These indirect homophilous drinker relationships are shorter lived, however, and suggest that drinking is a social focus that connects adolescents via proximity, rather than assortativity. These findings suggest that drinking leads to more situational and superficial social integration
Nonvolcanic seafloor spreading and corner-flow rotation accommodated by extensional faulting at 15°N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge : a structural synthesis of ODP Leg 209

The definitive version was published in Geochemistry Geophysics Geosystems 8 (2007): Q06015, doi:10.1029/2006GC001567.Drilling during ODP Leg 209, dredging, and submersible dives have delineated an anomalous stretch of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge north and south of the 15°20′N Fracture Zone. The seafloor here consists dominantly of mantle peridotite with gabbroic intrusions that in places is covered by a thin, discontinuous extrusive volcanic layer. Thick lithosphere (10–20 km) in this region inhibits magma from reaching shallow levels beneath the ridge axis, thereby causing plate accretion to be accommodated by extensional faulting rather than magmatism. The bathymetry and complex fault relations in the drill-core suggest that mantle denudation and spreading are accommodated by a combination of high-displacement, rolling-hinge normal faults and secondary lower-displacement normal faults. These extensional faults must also accommodate corner flow rotation (up to 90°) of the upwelling mantle within the shallow lithosphere, consistent with remnant magnetic inclinations in denuded peridotite and gabbro from Leg 209 core that indicate up to 90° of sub-Curie-temperature rotation.This work was funded by a grant

Analysis of the TSC1and TSC2genes in sporadic renal cell carcinomas
The genetic events involved in the aetiology of non-clear-cell renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and a proportion of clear cell RCC remain to be defined. Germline mutations of the TSC1and TSC2genes cause tuberous sclerosis (TSC), a multi-system hamartoma syndrome that is also associated with RCC. We assessed 17 sporadic clear cell RCCs with a previously identified VHLmutation, 15 clear-cell RCCs without an identified VHLmutation and 15 non-clear-cell RCCs for loss of heterozygosity (LOH) at chromosomes 9q34 and 16p13.3, the chromosomal locations of TSC1and TSC2. LOH was detected in 4/9, 1/11 and 3/13 cases informative at both loci. SSCP analysis of the whole coding region of the retained allele did not reveal any cases with a detectable intragenic second somatic mutation. Furthermore, RT-PCR analysis of TSC1and TSC2on total RNA from 8 clear-cell RCC cell lines confirmed expression of both TSC genes. These data indicate that biallelic inactivation of TSC1or TSC2is not frequent in sporadic RCC and suggests that the molecular mechanisms of renal carcinogenesis in TSC are likely to be distinct. © 2001 Cancer Research Campaignhttp://www.bjcancer.com  http://www.bjcancer.co
