Amazonian Hydrothermal Alteration Comparing Nakhlite Secondary Mineralogy to Water Rock Reaction Experiments
We report on results from experiments with Mars analog materials under diagenetic conditions. The mineralogical results of our experiments suggest that an important type of fluid alteration in the Amazonian may be short duration (e.g. less than 1 year) events from near neutral, dilute brines, that were able to exchange CO2 either directly, or via ice reservoirs, with the atmosphere
Nanoscale thermal properties of carbon nanotubes/epoxy composites by atomistic simulations
Carbon nanotubes/epoxy composites are increasingly employed in several industrial fields, because of the enhanced material properties provided by the nanofillers. In particular, the thermal conductivity of these nanocomposites is determined by heat transfer mechanisms occurring over multiple scales, thus causing a complex relation between effective response and microscopic characteristics of the material. Here, the thermal properties of epoxy composites reinforced by carbon nanotubes are investigated using atomistic simulations. For a better understanding of how the effective thermal conductivity arises from the characteristics of the composite at the nanoscale, the thermal properties of its constituents are studied separately according to different geometrical, physical and chemical characteristics. The thermal conductivity of carbon nanotubes and epoxy resin alone is first investigated by molecular dynamics; then, the Kapitza resistance at the nanotube–nanotube and nanotube–epoxy interfaces is studied as well. The effective thermal conductivity of the carbon nanotubes/epoxy composite is finally computed and the observed behavior interpreted on the basis of the properties of the nanofillers, matrix and interfaces alone. Results – verified against effective medium theory predictions – show that, for the considered configurations, the effective thermal conductivity of the nanocomposite increases with the nanotube length and volume fraction, with the curing degree of the epoxy and system temperature. In perspective, the presented approach could be employed to investigate other constitutive materials or properties of nanocomposites
Open Issues on the Synthesis of Evolved Stellar Populations at Ultraviolet Wavelengths
In this paper we briefly review three topics that have motivated our (and
others') investigations in recent years within the context of evolutionary
population synthesis techniques. These are: The origin of the FUV up-turn in
elliptical galaxies, the age-metallicity degeneracy, and the study of the
mid-UV rest-frame spectra of distant red galaxies. We summarize some of our
results and present a very preliminary application of a UV grid of theoretical
spectra in the analysis of integrated properties of aged stellar populations.
At the end, we concisely suggest how these topics can be tackled once the World
Space Observatory enters into operation in the midst of this decade.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space

Early Science with the Large Millimetre Telescope: Molecules in the Extreme Outflow of a proto-Planetary Nebula
Extremely high velocity emission likely related to jets is known to occur in
some proto-Planetary Nebulae. However, the molecular complexity of this
kinematic component is largely unknown. We observed the known extreme outflow
from the proto-Planetary Nebula IRAS 16342-3814, a prototype water fountain, in
the full frequency range from 73 to 111 GHz with the RSR receiver on the Large
Millimetre Telescope. We detected the molecules SiO, HCN, SO, and CO.
All molecular transitions, with the exception of the latter are detected for
the first time in this source, and all present emission with velocities up to a
few hundred km s. IRAS 16342-3814 is therefore the only source of this
kind presenting extreme outflow activity simultaneously in all these molecules,
with SO and SiO emission showing the highest velocities found of these species
in proto-Planetary Nebulae. To be confirmed is a tentative weak SO component
with a FWHM 700 km s. The extreme outflow gas consists of dense
gas (n 10--10 cm), with a mass larger than
0.02--0.15 M. The relatively high abundances of SiO and SO may
be an indication of an oxygen-rich extreme high velocity gas.Comment: Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical

Spatial correlations in attribute communities
Community detection is an important tool for exploring and classifying the
properties of large complex networks and should be of great help for spatial
networks. Indeed, in addition to their location, nodes in spatial networks can
have attributes such as the language for individuals, or any other
socio-economical feature that we would like to identify in communities. We
discuss in this paper a crucial aspect which was not considered in previous
studies which is the possible existence of correlations between space and
attributes. Introducing a simple toy model in which both space and node
attributes are considered, we discuss the effect of space-attribute
correlations on the results of various community detection methods proposed for
spatial networks in this paper and in previous studies. When space is
irrelevant, our model is equivalent to the stochastic block model which has
been shown to display a detectability-non detectability transition. In the
regime where space dominates the link formation process, most methods can fail
to recover the communities, an effect which is particularly marked when
space-attributes correlations are strong. In this latter case, community
detection methods which remove the spatial component of the network can miss a
large part of the community structure and can lead to incorrect results.Comment: 10 pages and 7 figure
Grand unification in the minimal left-right symmetric extension of the standard model
The simplest minimal left-right symmetric extension of the standard model is
studied in the high energy limit, and some consequences of the grand
unification hypothesis are explored assuming that the parity breaking scale is
the only relevant energy between the electro-weak scale and the unification
point. While the model is shown to be compatible with the observed neutrino
phenomenology, the parity breaking scale and the heavy boson masses are
predicted to be above 10^7 TeV, quite far from the reach of nowadays
experiments. Below that scale only an almost sterile right handed neutrino is
allowed with a mass M \approx 100 TeV
Lindane and Endosulfan Sulfate Isomers in Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin, 1791) Oyster Populations in Lagoon Systems from Central Gulf of Mexico
The aim of this study was to determine Lindane and Endosulfan Sulfate isomers in Crassostrea virginica oyster populations (Gmelin, 1791) in the Mandinga and Alvarado lagoon systems located in the central Gulf of Mexico. Samples were taken from the main oyster banks of each lagoon system, during the three representative seasons of the region, wet, dry and north winds. By means of free diving, 30 commercial size oysters (7 ± 3 cm) were collected in four oyster banks or stations of the Mandinga lagoon system, totaling 360 organisms, while in the Alvarado lagoon system there were a total of 90 oysters during the annual cycle. Concentration of lindane and endosulfan sulfate isotopes in C. virginica was performed with a gas chromatograph (Thermo Electron Model Trace GC Ultra 115V, Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc©, Monterrey, Nuevo León, México) with an Electron capture detector. Results showed that in the Alvarado Lagoon system mean concentrations of C. virginica oysters for lindane pesticide were 4.11 ± 3.83 ng⋅g-1, whereas for the Mandinga lagoon system, were 8.69 ± 5.15 ng⋅g-1. Endosulfan sulfate showed the highest average concentration in the Mandinga lagoon system with 24.68 ± 1.20 ng ⋅g-1. In addition, the endosulfan sulfate presents differences in its spatial distribution; high concentration levels in the Mandinga lagoon system whereas the lindane heterogeneity at all sampling points in both lagoons. Values of concentrations and relationships between compounds suggest recent contributions that could correspond to the excessive fluctuations of water discharged into the lagoon caused by the atypical rains of the year of sampling. It was concluded that endosulfan sulfate and lindane show concentration in all the points of sampling in both lagoons
