Lick Spectral Indices for Super Metal-rich Stars
The Lick Fe5015, Fe5270, Fe5335, Mgb and Mg2 indices are presented for 139
candidate SMR stars of different luminosity class studied in Malagnini et al.
(2000). Evidence is found for a standard (i.e. [Mg/Fe]~0) Mg vs. Fe relative
abundance. Both the Worthey et al. (1994) and Buzzoni et al. (1992, 1994)
fitting functions are found to suitably match the data at super-solar
metallicity regimes. See http://www.merate.mi.astro.it/~eps/home.html for
further details.Comment: 16 pages with 11 figures (Aastex format). To appear in the Nov. '01

Direct evidence for efficient ultrafast charge separation in epitaxial WS2/graphene heterostructures
We use time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-ARPES) to investigate ultrafast charge transfer in an epitaxial heterostructure made of monolayer WS2 and graphene. This heterostructure combines the benefits of a direct-gap semiconductor with strong spin-orbit coupling and strong light-matter interaction with those of a semimetal hosting massless carriers with extremely high mobility and long spin lifetimes. We find that, after photoexcitation at resonance to the A-exciton in WS2, the photoexcited holes rapidly transfer into the graphene layer while the photoexcited electrons remain in the WS2 layer. The resulting charge-separated transient state is found to have a lifetime of ∼1 ps. We attribute our findings to differences in scattering phase space caused by the relative alignment of WS2 and graphene bands as revealed by high-resolution ARPES. In combination with spin-selective optical excitation, the investigated WS2/graphene heterostructure might provide a platform for efficient optical spin injection into graphene
A novel high resolution contactless technique for thermal field mapping and thermal conductivity determination: Two-Laser Raman Thermometry
We present a novel high resolution contactless technique for thermal
conductivity determination and thermal field mapping based on creating a
thermal distribution of phonons using a heating laser, while a second laser
probes the local temperature through the spectral position of a Raman active
mode. The spatial resolution can be as small as nm, whereas its
temperature accuracy is K. We validate this technique investigating the
thermal properties of three free-standing single crystalline Si membranes with
thickness of 250, 1000, and 2000 nm. We show that for 2-dimensional materials
such as free-standing membranes or thin films, and for small temperature
gradients, the thermal field decays as in the diffusive
limit. The case of large temperature gradients within the membranes leads to an
exponential decay of the thermal field, . The
results demonstrate the full potential of this new contactless method for
quantitative determination of thermal properties. The range of materials to
which this method is applicable reaches far beyond the here demonstrated case
of Si, as the only requirement is the presence of a Raman active mode
Measurement of the production of a W boson in association with a charm quark in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
The production of a W boson in association with a single charm quark is studied using 4.6 fb−1 of pp collision data at s√ = 7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. In events in which a W boson decays to an electron or muon, the charm quark is tagged either by its semileptonic decay to a muon or by the presence of a charmed meson. The integrated and differential cross sections as a function of the pseudorapidity of the lepton from the W-boson decay are measured. Results are compared to the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD calculations obtained from various parton distribution function parameterisations. The ratio of the strange-to-down sea-quark distributions is determined to be 0.96+0.26−0.30 at Q 2 = 1.9 GeV2, which supports the hypothesis of an SU(3)-symmetric composition of the light-quark sea. Additionally, the cross-section ratio σ(W + +c¯¯)/σ(W − + c) is compared to the predictions obtained using parton distribution function parameterisations with different assumptions about the s−s¯¯¯ quark asymmetry
Open Issues on the Synthesis of Evolved Stellar Populations at Ultraviolet Wavelengths
In this paper we briefly review three topics that have motivated our (and
others') investigations in recent years within the context of evolutionary
population synthesis techniques. These are: The origin of the FUV up-turn in
elliptical galaxies, the age-metallicity degeneracy, and the study of the
mid-UV rest-frame spectra of distant red galaxies. We summarize some of our
results and present a very preliminary application of a UV grid of theoretical
spectra in the analysis of integrated properties of aged stellar populations.
At the end, we concisely suggest how these topics can be tackled once the World
Space Observatory enters into operation in the midst of this decade.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space

A Simple Analytical Model of the Angular Momentum Transformation in Strongly Focused Light Beams
A ray-optics model is proposed to describe the vector beam transformation in
a strongly focusing optical system. In contrast to usual approaches basing on
the focused field distribution near the focal plane, we employ the transformed
beam pattern formed immediately near the exit pupil. In this cross section,
details of the output field distribution are of minor physical interest but
proper allowance is made for transformation of the incident beam polarization
state. This enables to obtain the spin and orbital angular momentum
representations which are valid everywhere in the transformed beam space.
Simple analytical results are available for the transversely homogeneous
circularly polarized incident beam limited only by the circular aperture.
Behavior of the spin and orbital angular momenta of the output beam and their
dependences on the focusing strength (aperture angle) are analyzed. The
obtained analytical results are in good qualitative and reasonable quantitative
agreement to the calculation performed for the spatially inhomogeneous Gaussian
and Laguerre-Gaussian beams. In application to Laguerre-Gaussian beams, the
model provides possibility for analyzing the angular momentum transformation in
beams already possessing some mixture of the spin and orbital angular momenta.
The model supplies efficient and physically transparent means for qualitative
analysis of the spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion. It can be
generalized to incident beams with complicated spatial and polarization
structure.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures. The paper has appeared as an attempt to clearly
understand transformations of the light beam polarization in the course of
strong focusing. It provides description of the optical vortex formation
after focusing a circularly polarized beam and explains why the the orbital
angular momentum emerges in the focused bea
Carbon export and regeneration in the coastal upwelling system of Monterey Bay, central California
In order to quantify the role of coastal upwelling regions as source or sink areas for carbon, the relationships between particulate organic carbon (POC) production, export, remineralization, and accumulation were examined in Monterey Bay from 1989 through 1992. During a normal upwelling year (1989–90), a high positive correlation (r = 0.91) is observed between biweekly primary production and POC export at 450 m. Primary production values range from 500 mgC m−2 d−1 during the winter, to 2600 mgC m−2 d−1 in the spring and summer upwelling months. Corresponding deep-water (450 m) POC fluxes vary from a minimum of 10 mgC m−2 d−1 in December, to 120 mgC m−2 d−1 in May. In contrast, the mid-1991 through 1992 data sets obtained during the \u2791–92 El Nino period, show a relatively poor correlation (r = 0.23) between productivity and carbon export. Calculated ratios of POC export to POC production (defined as e-ratios) display a trend for the three-year data sets in which the e-ratio values are greatest during periods of low productivity and decrease to minimal values when surface production is high. Upwelling-induced, offshore Ekman transport of organic matter and probable seasonal changes in the planktonic community structure are the mechanisms likely to be responsible for the e-ratio trends. Based on the data sets reported from this work, a simple box model of the annual export and regeneration of particulate organic carbon is presented for the Monterey Bay region. An appreciable advective and/or recycling “loss” from the euphotic zone of 362.8 gC m−2 y−1 is estimated, representing primarily algal material transported offshore and/or recycled within the upper 100 m of the water column. Annual mid-water (≈100– 450 m) and deep-water (\u3e450 m) POC remineralization rates of 71.8 gC m−2 y−1 of 7.2 gC m−2 y−1, respectively, are reported for Monterey Bay. The average POC rain rate to the underlying slope sediments is sufficient to satisfy reported benthic utilization requirements without invoking an additional input source of POC via deep lateral advection and/or the downslope movement of particulate material

High-fidelity simulations of CdTe vapor deposition from a new bond-order potential-based molecular dynamics method
CdTe has been a special semiconductor for constructing the lowest-cost solar
cells and the CdTe-based Cd1-xZnxTe alloy has been the leading semiconductor
for radiation detection applications. The performance currently achieved for
the materials, however, is still far below the theoretical expectations. This
is because the property-limiting nanoscale defects that are easily formed
during the growth of CdTe crystals are difficult to explore in experiments.
Here we demonstrate the capability of a bond order potential-based molecular
dynamics method for predicting the crystalline growth of CdTe films during
vapor deposition simulations. Such a method may begin to enable defects
generated during vapor deposition of CdTe crystals to be accurately explored
