    GHOST: experimenting countermeasures for conflicts in the pilot's activity

    An approach for designing countermeasures to cure conflict in aircraft pilots’ activities is presented, both based on Artificial Intelligence and Human Factors concepts. The first step is to track the pilot’s activity, i.e. to reconstruct what he has actually done thanks to the flight parameters and reference models describing the mission and procedures. The second step is to detect conflict in the pilot’s activity, and this is linked to what really matters to the achievement of the mission. The third step is to design accu- rate countermeasures which are likely to do bet- ter than the existing onboard devices.     Towards an HLA Run-time Infrastructure with Hard Real-time Capabilities

    Our work takes place in the context of the HLA standard and its application in real-time systems context. The HLA standard is inadequate for taking into consideration the different constraints involved in real-time computer systems. Many works have been invested in order to providing real-time capabilities to Run Time Infrastructures (RTI) to run real time simulation. Most of these initiatives focus on major issues including QoS guarantee, Worst Case Transit Time (WCTT) knowledge and scheduling services provided by the underlying operating systems. Even if our ultimate objective is to achieve real-time capabilities for distributed HLA federations executions, this paper describes a preliminary work focusing on achieving hard real-time properties for HLA federations running on a single computer under Linux operating systems.     The purpose of this paper is to explore more precisely how observational analyses of classroom interaction can be validated, and further, how the validation of claims about instructional variables (such as the effectiveness of programs, teaching methods, syllabus changes, materials, rule presentations, and so on) depends on the application of valid observational analyses. Validity, which has many aspects but refers in essence to the determination of the "truth" of an analysis or theory, is a fundamental goal in researchers' efforts to understand and predict language learning and teaching outcomes. The paper will first briefly describe the place of observation in research validation, then show the applicability of validation in second language classroom research with respect to different methodological orientations, then illustrate three different approaches to validation of instructional research by means of observation

    Real-Time Distributed Aircraft Simulation through HLA

    This paper presents some ongoing researches carried out in the context of the PRISE (Research Platform for Embedded Systems Engineering) Project. This platform has been designed to evaluate and validate new embedded system concepts and techniques through a special hardware and software environment. Since many actual embedded equipments are not available, their corresponding behavior is simulated using the HLA architecture, an IEEE standard for distributed simulation, and a Run-time infrastructure called CERTI and developed at ONERA. HLA is currently largely used in many simulation applications, but the limited performances of the RTIs raises doubts over the feasibility of HLA federations with real-time requirements. This paper addresses the problem of achieving real-time performances with HLA. Several experiments are discussed using well-known aircraft simulators such as the Microsoft Flight Simulator, FlightGear, and X-plane connected with the CERTI Run-time Infrastructure. The added value of these activities is to demonstrate that according to a set of innovative solutions, HLA is well suited to achieve hard real time constraints

    The concept of Identity, its representation and the definition of its attributes see essential changes in its translation into the digital world. The elements involved in the process of identification and authentication, attributes and identifiers, are created into a virtual world where physicality vanish and elements of trust evolve, challenging the digital citizens. How the digital world influences the construction of our Identity, of our Trust is essential question to be considered. This report provides an eagle-eye view on the concept and implications of Digital Identities. After an introduction situating the concept of Identity, the report clarifies its contemporary meaning and proposes a definition of reference. In a second time, the authors examine the consequences of the translation of the concept of Identity into the digital, internet-connected world. They analyse then the particularities and consequences of this translation which allow them to situate and define the concept of Digital Identities. Finally, they conclude by the challenges that Digital Identity poses to the digital citizen in the attempt to manage and protect its attributes with the advent of Internet of Things and Blockchain technology.     Review Essay: A Critique of Flynn's Parameter-Setting Model of Second Language Acquisition

    This paper is a critique of the parameter-setting model of second language acquisition proposed by Suzanne Flynn. Flynn has applied the notion of a universal head direction parameter to the prediction of acquisition of English adverbial clause structure and anaphoric relations by L1 Spanish, Japanese, and Chinese learners. In two studies involving elicited imitation and comprehension of target language sentences, Flynn argues that the head direction parameter explains the pattern of results. One proficiency group of Spanish learners revealed a greater ease in production of postposed (forward) pronoun anaphora over prcposcd (backward) anaphora, while Japanese and Chinese learners showed no differences. Flynn claims that the match in head direction between Spanish and English favors this outcome and related results, while Japanese and Chinese learners have difficulty because of the mismatch. This critique raises serious questions as to the adequacy of Flynn's methodology and model to investigate the issue or explain the results
