    More evidence that less is better: Sub-optimal choice in dogs

    The less-is-better effect is a preference for the lesser of two alternatives sometimes observed when they are evaluated separately. For example, a dinner service of 24 intact pieces might be judged to be more valuable than a 40-piece dinner service containing nine broken pieces. Pattison and Zentall (Animal Cognition, 17: 1019-1022, 2014) reported similar sub-optimal choice behavior in dogs using a simultaneous choice procedure. Given a choice between a single high-value food item (cheese) or an equivalent high-value item plus a lower-value food item (carrot), their dogs chose the individual item. In a subsequent test, the dogs preferred two high-value items to a single high-value item, suggesting that avoidance of multiple items did not cause the sub-optimal choice behavior. In two experiments, we replicated Pattison and Zentall’s procedure while including additional controls. In Experiment 1, habituation of neophobia for multiple items was controlled for by intermixing the two types of test trial within a single experimental session. In Experiment 2, we controlled for avoidance of heterogeneous rewards by including test trials in which a choice was offered between the combination of items and a single low-value item. In both experiments we observed sub-optimal choice behavior which could not be explained by either of these putative mechanisms. Our results, as well as those of Pattison and Zentall, are consistent with the suggestion that dogs’ assessment of the total value of multiple items is based, at least partly, on their average quality

    A Machine Learning Tutorial for Operational Meteorology, Part II: Neural Networks and Deep Learning

    Over the past decade the use of machine learning in meteorology has grown rapidly. Specifically neural networks and deep learning have been used at an unprecedented rate. In order to fill the dearth of resources covering neural networks with a meteorological lens, this paper discusses machine learning methods in a plain language format that is targeted for the operational meteorological community. This is the second paper in a pair that aim to serve as a machine learning resource for meteorologists. While the first paper focused on traditional machine learning methods (e.g., random forest), here a broad spectrum of neural networks and deep learning methods are discussed. Specifically this paper covers perceptrons, artificial neural networks, convolutional neural networks and U-networks. Like the part 1 paper, this manuscript discusses the terms associated with neural networks and their training. Then the manuscript provides some intuition behind every method and concludes by showing each method used in a meteorological example of diagnosing thunderstorms from satellite images (e.g., lightning flashes). This paper is accompanied with an open-source code repository to allow readers to explore neural networks using either the dataset provided (which is used in the paper) or as a template for alternate datasets

    Ischemic volvulus of the transverse colon: A case report and review of literature

    A 75-year old male presented to the emergency room with worsening abdominal pain and distension. Plain radiographs were suggestive of a large bowel obstruction due to volvulus. An attempt to detorse the volvulus and decompress the colon endoscopically failed, after which the patient was taken for an exploratory laparotomy. A transverse colon volvulus was found, and an extended right hemicolectomy and ileostomy was performed. We discuss the diagnosis and management of transverse colon volvulus and review the pertinent literature

    Thermodynamically accurate modeling of the catalytic cycle of photosynthetic oxygen evolution: A mathematical solution to asymmetric Markov chains

    AbstractForty-three years ago, Kok and coworkers introduced a phenomenological model describing period-four oscillations in O2 flash yields during photosynthetic water oxidation (WOC), which had been first reported by Joliot and coworkers. The original two-parameter Kok model was subsequently extended in its level of complexity to better simulate diverse data sets, including intact cells and isolated PSII-WOCs, but at the expense of introducing physically unrealistic assumptions necessary to enable numerical solutions. To date, analytical solutions have been found only for symmetric Kok models (inefficiencies are equally probable for all intermediates, called “S-states”). However, it is widely accepted that S-state reaction steps are not identical and some are not reversible (by thermodynamic restraints) thereby causing asymmetric cycles. We have developed a mathematically more rigorous foundation that eliminates unphysical assumptions known to be in conflict with experiments and adopts a new experimental constraint on solutions. This new algorithm termed STEAMM for S-state Transition Eigenvalues of Asymmetric Markov Models enables solutions to models having fewer adjustable parameters and uses automated fitting to experimental data sets, yielding higher accuracy and precision than the classic Kok or extended Kok models. This new tool provides a general mathematical framework for analyzing damped oscillations arising from any cycle period using any appropriate Markov model, regardless of symmetry. We illustrate applications of STEAMM that better describe the intrinsic inefficiencies for photon-to-charge conversion within PSII-WOCs that are responsible for damped period-four and period-two oscillations of flash O2 yields across diverse species, while using simpler Markov models free from unrealistic assumptions

    M-sigma relations across space and time

    Feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) has long been invoked to explain the correlation between black hole mass and stellar velocity dispersion (M-{\sigma}) discovered in low redshift galaxies. We describe the time evolution of AGN in the M-{\sigma} plane based on our gap model (Garofalo, Evans & Sambruna 2010) for black hole accretion and jet formation illustrating a fundamental difference between jetted and non-jetted AGN. While the latter tend to evolve diagonally upward with black hole mass increasing along with stellar dispersion, we show that jetted AGN tend on average to move initially more upwards because their effect on velocity dispersion is weaker than for non-jetted AGN. But this initial phase is followed by a shift in the nature of the feedback, from positive to negative, a transition that is more dramatic on average in denser cluster environments. The feedback gets its kick from tilted jets which shut down star formation but increase velocity dispersion values. As this change in the nature of the feedback takes tens of million to hundreds of millions of years, jetted AGN triggered in mergers will evolve mostly upwards for up to order 10^8 years, followed by an extremely long phase in which low excitation progressively slows black hole growth but dramatically affects stellar dispersion. As a result, powerful jetted AGN evolve for most of their lives almost horizontally on the M-{\sigma} plane. The prediction is that strongest AGN feedback on stellar dispersion is a late universe phenomenon with M87 being a case in point. We show how jetted and non-jetted AGN parallel the Sersic and core-Sersic galaxy paths in the M-{\sigma} plane found by Sahu et al (2019)

    The Effects of Video Instruction Versus Verbal Instruction on High Intensity Interval Exercise Performance: A Pilot Analysis

    It has been indicated that music and motivational videos can have a positive impact on high-intensity treadmill performance in trained athletes. It has also been shown that live or recorded video exercise instructions have an overall positive effect on exercise performance accuracy in upper extremity exercises compared to written or verbal instructions in adults with no shoulder pathologies. It is unclear whether exercise instructions given via a home workout video has any effects on non-equipment based high-intensity interval exercise performance. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine whether exercising along with pre-recorded video instructions positively impacts overall exercise performance in a single bout of Tabata exercise compared to verbal and handout instructions alone. Methods: In this cross-over design, 8 (2F; 6M) sedentary, college-aged (171.5±40.7 lbs; 67.6±3in; 21.3±1.5yrs) individuals participated in two randomized intervention groups: 1) Tabata with video instructions on a computer screen (V) and 2) Tabata without video instruction (NV). The Tabata workout consisted of five total sessions. Each session was composed of two rounds, with each round containing four exercises each lasting 20 seconds followed by 10 seconds of rest. Following the completion of a session, participants were given a 60 second rest period. The total duration of the exercise was 25 minutes. During the recovery period, the participants’ heart rate (HR) and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were recorded. Prior(pre) and immediately following the completion of exercise(post), participants were given the felt arousal scale (FAS) and the 10-centimeter visual analog fatigue scale (FS) to assess participants arousal and overall fatigue. Significant differences (p\u3c0.05) for average RPE for each trial along with the pre and post FAS and FS for each trial was determined using a Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test. Significant differences between HR were analyzed using a Student\u27s T-test (p\u3c0.05). Results: The results of the dependent samples Wilcoxon test did not reveal any significant differences between NVFASPre and VFASpre (p=0.783), NVFASpost and VFASpost (p=0.71), NVFSpre and VFSpre (p=.401), NVFSpost and VFSpost (p=0.401) and NVRPE and VRPE (p=0.779). The student\u27s t-test also did not reveal any significant differences between NVHR and VHR (174.3 ± 18.4 & 174.3 ± 13.2 BPM; p=.359). Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that there was no significant difference in exercise performance, arousal, intensity, and fatigue between instructions given visually or verbally. However, the preference of the participants for instruction was verbal rather than visual. Comments from the participants included that the person demonstrating the exercises in the video reduced their self-efficacy, because they could not keep up. Limitations of this study were the small sample size, not counting the number of repetitions for each exercise, and population of the participants. Future research should address these limitations
