Recognizing aboriginal oral tradition through blended learning: a success story
The Aboriginal Health and Community Administration Program (AHCAP) is a certificate program developed through the partnership of the Institute for Aboriginal Health and Continuing Studies at the University of British Columbia. This paper examines factors in the program’s blended design and development which have contributed to the exceptionally high completion rate and the strongly positive responses and outcomes for widely diverse learner cohorts. Factors which appear to contribute to the program success include: 1) a holistic approach compatible with traditional Aboriginal oral traditions of teaching and learning; 2) a university partnership that taps into unique networks and capacities; 3) incorporating the 4 R’s of Aboriginal education: relevance, reciprocity, respect and responsibility generated throughout the learning and teaching, both online and face-to-face; and 4) making the program accessible to geographically and technologically diverse communities of learners.\u
Fluid logic devices: a review
Background study of work connected with this report entailed the
collection of a large number of specialised and general technical
publications concerning the techniques and applications of fluid
computing. General conclusions from these investigations are that,
in Russia and America, this science is very advanced and considered to
be of great significance, especially where pure fluid logic devices are
concerned. The purpose of this survey is to enable the reader to assess
the quality and magnitude of work done by other academic institutions,
and also to show with what importance this science is viewed elsewhere.
It must be realized, however, that general description and discussion
of available bibliography is the only assessment possible, as work of a
military nature has not been released

transducer used on commercial numerically controlled machine tools. Some
attempt is made to categorise and indicate the scope and usage of these
devices. The descriptions deliberately set out to explain this essentially
electrical topic in a manner not requiring expert electrical knowledge
Hydrogen Isocyanide in Comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann (Fragment B)
We present a sensitive 3-sigma upper limit of 1.1% for the HNC/HCN abundance
ratio in comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann (Fragment B), obtained on May 10-11,
2006 using Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO). This limit is a factor of
~7 lower than the values measured previously in moderately active comets at 1
AU from the Sun. Comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann was depleted in most volatile
species, except of HCN. The low HNC/HCN ratio thus argues against HNC
production from polymers produced from HCN. However, thermal degradation of
macromolecules, or polymers, produced from ammonia and carbon compounds, such
as acetylene, methane, or ethane appears a plausible explanation for the
observed variations of the HNC/HCN ratio in moderately active comets, including
the very low ratio in comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann reported here. Similar
polymers have been invoked previously to explain anomalous 14N/15N ratios

Comets as Messengers from the Early Solar System - Emerging Insights on Delivery of Water, Nitriles, and Organics to Earth
The question of exogenous delivery of water and organics to Earth and other young planets is of critical importance for understanding the origin of Earth's volatiles, and for assessing the possible existence of exo-planets similar to Earth. Viewed from a cosmic perspective, Earth is a dry planet, yet its oceans are enriched in deuterium by a large factor relative to nebular hydrogen and analogous isotopic enrichments in atmospheric nitrogen and noble gases are also seen. Why is this so? What are the implications for Mars? For icy Worlds in our Planetary System? For the existence of Earth-like exoplanets? An exogenous (vs. outgassed) origin for Earth's atmosphere is implied, and intense debate on the relative contributions of comets and asteroids continues - renewed by fresh models for dynamical transport in the protoplanetary disk, by revelations on the nature and diversity of volatile and rocky material within comets, and by the discovery of ocean-like water in a comet from the Kuiper Belt (cf., Mumma & Charnley 2011). Assessing the creation of conditions favorable to the emergence and sustenance of life depends critically on knowledge of the nature of the impacting bodies. Active comets have long been grouped according to their orbital properties, and this has proven useful for identifying the reservoir from which a given comet emerged (OC, KB) (Levison 1996). However, it is now clear that icy bodies were scattered into each reservoir from a range of nebular distances, and the comet populations in today's reservoirs thus share origins that are (in part) common. Comets from the Oort Cloud and Kuiper Disk reservoirs should have diverse composition, resulting from strong gradients in temperature and chemistry in the proto-planetary disk, coupled with dynamical models of early radial transport and mixing with later dispersion of the final cometary nuclei into the long-term storage reservoirs. The inclusion of material from the natal interstellar cloud is probable, for comets formed in the outer solar system
On the ubiquity of molecular anions in the dense interstellar medium
Results are presented from a survey for molecular anions in seven nearby
Galactic star-forming cores and molecular clouds. The hydrocarbon anion C6H- is
detected in all seven target sources, including four sources where no anions
have been previously detected: L1172, L1389, L1495B and TMC-1C. The C6H-/C6H
column density ratio is greater than about 1.0% in every source, with a mean
value of 3.0% (and standard deviation 0.92%). Combined with previous
detections, our results show that anions are ubiquitous in dense clouds
wherever C6H is present. The C6H-/C6H ratio is found to show a positive
correlation with molecular hydrogen number density, and with the apparent age
of the cloud. We also report the first detection of C4H- in TMC-1 (at 4.8-sigma
confidence), and derive an anion-to-neutral ratio C4H-/C4H = (1.2 +- 0.4) x
10^-5 (= 0.0012 +- 0.0004%). Such a low value compared with C6H- highlights the
need for a revised radiative electron attachment rate for C4H. Chemical model
calculations show that the observed C4H- could be produced as a result of
reactions of oxygen atoms with C5H- and C6H-
Measurement of CHD on Titan at Submillimeter Wavelengths
We present the first radio/submillimeter detection of monodeuterated methane
(CHD) in Titan's atmosphere, using archival data from of the Atacama Large
Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The and
transitions at 465.235 and 465.250 GHz ( mm) were measured at
significance levels of and , respectively. These two
lines were modeled using the Non-linear optimal Estimator for MultivariatE
spectral analySIS (NEMESIS) radiative transfer code to determine the
disk-averaged CHD volume mixing ratio = in Titan's
stratosphere (at altitudes km). By comparison with the CH vertical
abundance profile measured by Cassini-Huygens mass spectrometry, the resulting
value for D/H in CH is . This is consistent
with previous ground-based and in-situ measurements from the Cassini-Huygens
mission, though slightly lower than the average of the previous values.
Additional CHD observations at higher spatial resolution will be required
to determine a value truly comparable with the Cassini-Huygens CH
measurements, by measuring CHD with ALMA close to Titan's equator. In the
post-Cassini era, spatially resolved observations of CHD with ALMA will
enable the latitudinal distribution of methane to be determined, making this an
