Equivariantly uniformly rational varieties
We introduce equivariant versions of uniform rationality: given an algebraic
group G, a G-variety is called G-uniformly rational (resp. G-linearly uniformly
rational) if every point has a G-invariant open neighborhood equivariantly
isomorphic to a G-invariant open subset of the affine space endowed with a
G-action (resp. linear G-action). We establish a criterion for Gm-uniform
rationality of affine variety equipped with hyperbolic Gm-action with a unique
fixed point, formulated in term of their Altmann-Hausen presentation. We prove
the Gm-uniform rationality of Koras-Russel threefolds of the first kind and we
also give example of non Gm-uniformly rational but smooth rational Gm-threefold
associated to pairs of plane rational curves birationally non equivalent to a
union of lines
The proposed Apologies Act for Scotland : good intentions with unforeseeable consequences
This article considers Scotland's proposed Apologies Act in the light of experience in other Common Law jurisdictions. A number of Common Law jurisdictions have passed Apologies Acts in the past 25 years, largely motivated by concerns about a 'litigation explosion'. The idea seems to be that providing evidentiary protection to apologies will encourage their use, or at least prevent insurers and lawyers from advising against them. Charlie Irvine considers the plausibility of this hypothesis and suggests that the drafters of the Bill face an unresolvable dilemma: blanket protection for apologies may prevent credible evidence from reaching the courts, while narrowing that protection to exclude admissions of fault may stilt apologies and rob them of credibility
Flight Risk or Danger to the Community? Rodriguez and the Protection of Civil Liberties in the U.S. Immigration System
Upon arrival to the United States, foreign nationals are required to prove beyond a doubt that they comply with the various requirements for admission into the country. For those who fail to meet this standard, there are only two options: accept immediate removal to their country of origin, or fight removal. For many who contest their deportation, their fate is civil incarceration until their case is adjudicated, which can take several years. The case of Jennings v. Rodriguez addresses the constitutionality of prolonged civil incarceration without the access of mandatory, periodic bond hearings for these individuals
Are Emotions Psychological Constructions?
According to psychological constructivism, emotions result from projecting folk emotion concepts onto felt affective episodes (e.g., Barrett 2017, LeDoux 2015). Moreover, while constructivists acknowledge there’s a biological dimension to emotion, they deny that emotions are (or involve) affect programs. So they also deny that emotions are natural kinds. However, the essential role constructivism gives to felt experience and folk concepts leads to an account that’s extensionally inadequate and functionally inaccurate. Moreover, biologically-oriented proposals that reject these commitments are not similarly encumbered. Recognizing this has two implications: biological mechanisms are more central to emotion than constructivism allows, and the conclusion that emotions aren’t natural kinds is premature
Differences between genders in marriage
Master's Project (M.Ed.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2014Many people quickly find that being married and keeping love going is hard work (Johnson, 2010). The rise in divorce rates over the last four decades, gender equality, and the changing expectations of the 21st century, are influencing the roles in marriage. The intent of this paper is to increase knowledge regarding the changes in marriage, emotional support, and gender trait differences. An application and lesson plan are provided for a psycho-educational group to practice emotional support and learn about gender traits and the expectations of marriage
