Effects on Longitudinal Stability and Control Characteristics of a B-29 Airplane of Variations in Stick-force and Control-rate Characteristics Obtained Through Use of a Booster in the Elevator-control System

    Get PDF
The longitudinal stability and control characteristics of a B-29 airplane have been measured with a control surface booster incorporated in the elevator-control system. The measurements were obtained with the booster operating to provide various control-force gradients and various maximum rates of control motion. Results are presented which show the effect of these booster parameters on the handling qualities of the test airplane

Elatinaceae are Sister to Malpighiaceae; Peridiscaceae Belong to Saxifragales

Phylogenetic data from plastid (ndhF and rbcL) and nuclear (PHYC) genes indicate that, within the order Malpighiales, Elatinaceae are strongly supported as sister to Malpighiaceae. There are several putative morphological synapomorphies for this clade; most notably, they both have a base chromosome number of X = 6 (or some multiple of three or six), opposite or whorled leaves with stipules, unicellular hairs (also uniseriate in some Elatinaceae), multicellular glands on the leaves, and resin (Elatinacae) or latex (Malpighiaceae). Further study is needed to determine if these features are synapomorphic within the order. Malpighiaceae have previously been inferred as sister to Peridiscaceae based on rbcL sequence data, but the rbcL sequence of Whittonia is a chimera of two sequences, neither of which appears to be Whittonia. Our data from plastid (atpB, rbcL) and nuclear (18S rDNA) genes instead place Peridiscaeace as a member of the Saxifragales.Organismic and Evolutionary Biolog

Longitudinal Stability and Control Characteristics of a B-29 Airplane with a Booster Incorporated in the Elevator Control System to Provide Various Stick-Force and Control-Rate Characteristics

The longitudinal stability and control characteristics of a B-29 airplane have been measured with a booster incorporated in the elevator control system. Tests were made to determine the effects on the handling qualities of the test airplane of variations in pilots control-force gradients as well as the effects of variations in the maximum rate of control motion supplied by the booster system

Cardiovascular Effects of Vena-Venous Bypass during Hepatic Transplantation

    (J. Extra-Corpor. Technol. 19[3] p. 268-273 Fall 1987, 12 ref). A series of 42 orthotopic hepatic transplant patients were reviewed retrospectively to determine the cardiovascular effects of heparinless venavenous bypass using a constrained vortex pump. Pump flows and cardiac outputs fell progressively during bypass. During the bypass period the vascular volume became hemoconcentrated as indicated by increases in hematocrit, colloid osmotic pressure, serum osmolality, and serium sodium. The changes in colloid osmotic pressure were inversely related to the bypass pump flow. Transient hemodynamics occurring at the onset of bypass included decreases in temperature, heart rate, arterial pressure, and increases in pulmonary artery pressure, central venous pressure and T wave amplitude. Core temperature changed at the rate of -0.89°C per hour during the bypass period as compared to -0.31°C during the previous phase of the procedure. Veno-venous bypass may improve hemodynamic stability during the anhepatic phase of the procedure, but the abdomen and lower extremities may be less than optimally perfused

Relative Frequency of Breast Cancer Website Information Topics: Environmental Risk, Prevention, Detection, Treatment, Awareness, Social Support, and Survivorship

The Internet is a popular source for Americans searching for health information (Fox, 2006; Hess et al., 2005). The potential for Internet usage for breast cancer information seeking makes it important to understand the types and relative frequency of content on environmental risk factors, prevention, detection, treatment, awareness, social support, and survivorship on popular breast cancer web pages. The top search results for websites in the most popular three search engines (Google, MSN, and Yahoo) were used to identify websites and web pages, and a total of 415 web pages were analyzed. This study demonstrates that about half of the top appearing web pages in popular search engines provide at least some information regarding environmental risks, risk reduction behaviors, awareness, prevention, detection, and treatment, while social support and survivorship topics were less frequently appearing topics. This study used ordinal codes and individual web pages as the unit of analysis, the results of which provide greater insight than prior content analyses of breast cancer media information
