Predicting Natural Frequencies Of A Hydrodynamically Lubricated Journal Bearing With Constant Oil Supply Pressure
The analytical and experimental investigations reported here deal with the natural frequencies and system behavior of a full journal bearing subjected to a small sinusoidal load superimposed on a large unidirectional static load. The analysis, verified by experimentation, shows that the bearing can be regarded as two independent second-order systems acting perpendicular to each other. The variable coefficients of the equations of motion cause the bearing to behave as an underdamped system for low values of static eccentricity ratio to, and as an overdamped system for intermediate values of to. The bearing tends to be unstable above a particular to. Further analysis is needed to determine the effects resulting from changing the oil inlet pressure. © 1976 by ASME
Probing the circulation of ring-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates
This paper reports the results of a theoretical and experimental study of how
the initial circulation of ring-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) can be
probed by time-of-flight (TOF) images. We have studied theoretically the
dynamics of a BEC after release from a toroidal trap potential by solving the
3D Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation. The trap and condensate characteristics
matched those of a recent experiment. The circulation, experimentally imparted
to the condensate by stirring, was simulated theoretically by imprinting a
linear azimuthal phase on the initial condensate wave function. The theoretical
TOF images were in good agreement with the experimental data. We find that upon
release the dynamics of the ring--shaped condensate proceeds in two distinct
phases. First, the condensate expands rapidly inward, filling in the initial
hole until it reaches a minimum radius that depends on the initial circulation.
In the second phase, the density at the inner radius increases to a maximum
after which the hole radius begins slowly to expand. During this second phase a
series of concentric rings appears due to the interference of ingoing and
outgoing matter waves from the inner radius. The results of the GP equation
predict that the hole area is a quadratic function of the initial circulation
when the condensate is released directly from the trap in which it was stirred
and is a linear function of the circulation if the trap is relaxed before
release. These scalings matched the data. Thus, hole size after TOF can be used
as a reliable probe of initial condensate circulation. This connection between
circulation and hole size after TOF will facilitate future studies of
atomtronic systems that are implemented in ultracold quantum gases.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure

The gendered experience of professional practice : a phenomenological study of the lived experiences of male elementary school counselors
This qualitative study explored the gendered professional experiences of male elementary school counselors. The participants or co-researchers were twelve men of varied ethnic and racial backgrounds between 25 and 60 years old. They lived and worked in five US states in urban, suburban and rural settings. They provided school counseling program services to students from 4-12 years old. All co-researchers had graduate degrees in counseling and state certification as school counselors. Their professional experience ranged from 2-20 years. The research utilized phenomenological methodology to uncover the "essence" of their experiences as male elementary school counselors. Co-researchers were interviewed up to three times for at least 45 minutes total. The interviews of all participants were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and then analyzed at four levels. First, a textural analysis of all relevant statements to the experience of being a male elementary school counselor was done. Second, a structural analysis was done to identify important contextual factors that helped to shape the experiences. Third, a textural-structural analysis was done to explore the connection between structural factors and the actual experience of being a male elementary school counselor. The final level of analysis produced a composite textural-structural analysis in arriving at the "essence" of the gendered experiences of male elementary school counselors. Strengths, limitations and research implications were included. This study highlighted literature relevant to the study of a nontraditional career choice for men and literature on the "feminization of education." The study and its findings highlighted the importance of considering sex and gender in school counseling and professional school counselor-student relationships. Implications of sex and gender on social-emotional and educational outcomes for elementary school students are discussed
A Hybrid Lagrangian Variation Method for Bose-Einstein Condensates in Optical Lattices
Solving the Gross--Pitaevskii (GP) equation describing a Bose--Einstein
condensate (BEC) immersed in an optical lattice potential can be a numerically
demanding task. We present a variational technique for providing fast, accurate
solutions of the GP equation for systems where the external potential exhibits
rapid varation along one spatial direction. Examples of such systems include a
BEC subjected to a one--dimensional optical lattice or a Bragg pulse. This
variational method is a hybrid form of the Lagrangian Variational Method for
the GP equation in which a hybrid trial wavefunction assumes a gaussian form in
two coordinates while being totally unspecified in the third coordinate. The
resulting equations of motion consist of a quasi--one--dimensional GP equation
coupled to ordinary differential equations for the widths of the transverse
gaussians. We use this method to investigate how an optical lattice can be used
to move a condensate non--adiabatically.Comment: 16 pages and 1 figur
Dilatancy transition in a granular model
We introduce a model of granular matter and use a stress ensemble to analyze
shearing. Monte Carlo simulation shows the model to exhibit a second order

Form of Supplemental Selenium in Vitamin-Mineral Premixes Differentially Affects Early Luteal and Gestational Concentrations of Progesterone, and Postpartum Concentrations of Prolactin in Beef Cows
Soils with marginal to deficient levels of selenium (Se) are widespread in the northwest, northeast, and southeast US. Supplementation to the diet of forage-grazing beef cattle with a vitamin-mineral mix containing additional Se is recommended in these geographic regions. We have reported that the form of supplemental Se provided to Angus-cross beef cows can affect circulating levels of progesterone (P4) on day 6 of the estrous cycle, a time when increased P4 is known to promote fertility. The objectives of this study were to (1) confirm and expand upon our initial report that the form of Se provided to cows affects early luteal-phase concentrations of systemic P4, (2) determine the effects of the form of Se on concentrations of P4 during gestation, and (3) determine the effects of the form of Se on concentrations of prolactin (PRL) during lactation. Throughout this study, Angus-cross beef cows had ad libitum access to a vitamin-mineral mix containing 35 ppm of Se in either an inorganic form (ISe) or a 1:1 mix of inorganic and organic forms (MIX). We observed a MIX-induced increase (p = 0.006) in systemic concentrations of P4 on day 7 but not on days 4 or 10 of the estrous cycle, consistent with our earlier report. We observed a MIX-induced increase (p = 0.02) in the systemic concentration of P4 at months 1, 3, 5, and 7 of gestation, and a MIX-induced decrease (p \u3c 0.05) in systemic concentrations of PRL at months 5 and 6 of lactation. In summary, the form of Se provided to cows can be manipulated to affect the early luteal phase and gestational concentrations of P4, and postpartum concentrations of PRL
