    The basic objective of the study was to identify a core population of recreational fishermen owning private boats and fishing one or more Virginia artificial reefs or other popular wreck fishing sites (Figure land Table l) with some degree of regularity (making a minimum of two or three reef trips per season). This population of fishing boat owners would be sampled randomly, by either telephone or fishing log books, to determine fishing effort and catch rates characterizing trips made to specific reef and other popular wreck fishing sites during the 1987 fishing season. Examination of the resulting data would determine whether fishing activity on all, or a limited number of reef and wreck fishing sites, would be sampled during the study\u27s second year. The sample population of reef and wreck fishermen would also be expanded in year two of the study

    Calorimetric Measurements of Magnetic-Field-Induced Inhomogeneous Superconductivity Above The Paramagnetic Limit

    We report the first magneto-caloric and calorimetric observations of a magnetic-field-induced phase transition within a superconducting state to the long-sought exotic "FFLO" superconducting state first predicted over 50 years ago. Through the combination of bulk thermodynamic calorimetric and magnetocaloric measurements in the organic superconductor Îș\kappa - (BEDT-TTF)2_2Cu(NCS)2_2, as a function of temperature, magnetic field strength, and magnetic field orientation, we establish for the first time that this field-induced first-order phase transition at the paramagnetic limit HpH_p for traditional superconductivity is to a higher entropy superconducting phase uniquely characteristic of the FFLO state. We also establish that this high-field superconducting state displays the bulk paramagnetic ordering of spin domains required of the FFLO state. These results rule out the alternate possibility of spin-density wave (SDW) ordering in the high field superconducting phase. The phase diagram determined from our measurements --- including the observation of a phase transition into the FFLO phase at HpH_p --- is in good agreement with recent NMR results and our own earlier tunnel-diode magnetic penetration depth experiments, but is in disagreement with the only previous calorimetric report.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

Examination of the resulting data would provide a basis for determining whether all, or only a limited number of reef sites, could be successfully monitored during the study\u27s second year. Based upon results of the first year\u27s project, the study\u27s methodology would be retained and/or modified during the second year to collect additional data on fishing success rates at various reef sites.

    Early indirect impact of COVID-19 pandemic on utilisation and outcomes of reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health services in Kenya: A cross-sectional study

    The paper determined the initial impact of COVID-19 pandemic on reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health (RMNCAH) services in Kenya. Hospital data for the first four months (March-June 2020) of the pandemic and the equivalent period in 2019 were compared using two-sample test of proportions. Despite the global projections for worse indicators, there were no differences in monthly mean (±SD) attendance between March-June 2019 vs 2020 for antenatal care (400,191.2±12,700.0 vs 384,697.3±20,838.6), hospital births (98,713.0±4,117.0 vs 99,634.5±3,215.5), family planning attendance (431,930.5±19,059.9 vs 448,168.3±31,559.8), post-abortion care (3,206.5±111.7 vs 448,168.3±31,559.8) and pentavalent 1 immunisation (114,701.0±3,701.1 vs 110,915.8±7,209.4), p>0.05. However, there were significant increases in FP utilisation among young people (25.7% to 27.0%), injectable (short-term) FP method uptake (58.2% to 62.3%), caesarean section rate (14.6% to 15.8%), adolescent maternal deaths (6.2% to 10.9%) and fresh stillbirths (0.9% to 1.0%) with a reduction in implants (long-term) uptake (16.5% to 13.0%) (p<0.05). With uncertainty around the duration of the pandemic, strategies to mitigate against catastrophic indirect maternal health outcomes are urgently needed. (Afr J Reprod Health 2021; 25[6]: 76-87)

    Co-variations of Cholera with Climatic and Environmental Parameters in Coastal Regions of Tanzania

    The bacterium causing cholera, Vibrio cholerae, is essentially a marine organism and its ecological dynamics have been linked to oceanographic conditions and climate. We used autoregressive models with external inputs to identify potential relationships between number of cholera cases in the coastal regions of mainland Tanzania with climatic and environmental indices (maximum air temperature, sea surface temperature, wind speed and chlorophyll a). Results show that between 2004 and 2010 coastal regions of mainland Tanzania with approximately 21% of the total population accounted for approximately 50% of the cases and 40% of the total mortality. Significant co-variations were found between seasonally adjusted cases and coastal ocean chlorophyll a and to some degree sea surface temperature, both lagged by one to four months. Cholera cases in Dar es Salaam were also weakly related to the Indian Ocean Dipole Mode Index lagged by 5 months, suggesting that it may be possible to predict Cholera outbreaks for Dar es Salaam 5 months ahead of time. The results also suggest that the severity of cholera in coastal regions is set by conditions in the ocean and that longer-term environmental and climate parameters may be used to predict cholera outbreaks along the coastal regions

    Whole Genome Sequence Data From Captive Baboons Implicate RBFOX1 in Epileptic Seizure Risk

    In this study, we investigate the genetic determinants that underlie epilepsy in a captive baboon pedigree and evaluate the potential suitability of this non-human primate model for understanding the genetic etiology of human epilepsy. Archived whole-genome sequence data were analyzed using both a candidate gene approach that targeted variants in baboon homologs of 19 genes (n = 20,881 SNPs) previously implicated in genetic generalized epilepsy (GGE) and a more agnostic approach that examined protein-altering mutations genome-wide as assessed by snpEff (n = 36,169). Measured genotype association tests for baboon cases of epileptic seizure were performed using SOLAR, as well as gene set enrichment analyses (GSEA) and protein–protein interaction (PPI) network construction of top association hits genome-wide (p \u3c 0.01; n = 441 genes). The maximum likelihood estimate of heritability for epileptic seizure in the pedigreed baboon sample is 0.76 (SE = 0.77; p = 0.07). Among candidate genes for GGE, a significant association was detected for an intronic SNP in RBFOX1 (p = 5.92 × 10–6; adjusted p = 0.016). For protein-altering variants, no genome-wide significant results were observed for epilepsy status. However, GSEA revealed significant positive enrichment for genes involved in the extracellular matrix structure (ECM; FDR = 0.0072) and collagen formation (FDR = 0.017), which was reflected in a major PPI network cluster. This preliminary study highlights the potential role of RBFOX1 in the epileptic baboon, a protein involved in transcriptomic regulation of multiple epilepsy candidate genes in humans and itself previously implicated in human epilepsy, both focal and generalized. Moreover, protein-damaging variants from across the genome exhibit a pattern of association that links collagen-containing ECM to epilepsy risk. These findings suggest a shared genetic etiology between baboon and human forms of GGE and lay the foundation for follow-up research
