Photon production in relativistic nuclear collisions at SPS and RHIC energies

Chiral Lagrangians are used to compute the production rate of photons from the hadronic phase of relativistic nuclear collisions. Special attention is paid to the role of the pseudovector a_1 meson. Calculations that include reactions with strange mesons, hadronic form factors and vector spectral densities consistent with dilepton production, as well as the emission from a quark-gluon plasma and primordial nucleon-nucleon collisions, reproduce the photon spectra measured at the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). Predictions for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are made.Comment: Work presented at the 26th annual Montreal-Rochester-Syracuse-Toronto conference (MRST 2004) on high energy physics, Montreal, QC, Canada, 12-14 May 2004. 8 pages, 3 figure

Study of 3MeV DC Electron Beam Accelerator to implement Distributed Control System

    Get PDF
Electron beams with beam energy in the range of 0.2 to 10 MeV have found a large number of industrial applications such as cross linking of plastic film, foam and cables, degradation of scrap Teflon, sterilization of medical products and food irradiation. Keeping these industrial applications in mind, the development and commissioning of a 3 MeV accelerator is being done at Electron Beam Center at Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. The accelerator comprises of several sub systems such as Scan magnet supply, Chiller unit, Vacuum unit, High voltage unit and other support sub-systems. All the above subsystems have to be controlled from central location in order to operate and monitor the accelerator safely. Each of the sub-system is controlled by a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) independently and their control and safety is ensured by the program logic. After each subsystem is tested separately all the PLCs are connected to the central PLC via Modbus RS232 and Modbus TCP-IP to implement the technology of Distributed Control System (DCS). A DCS refers to a process in which elements from different locations can be controlled by inputs from a remote place by different modes of control implementation

Antibody-Based Ticagrelor Reversal Agent in Healthy Volunteers.

BACKGROUND: Ticagrelor is an oral P2Y12 inhibitor that is used with aspirin to reduce the risk of ischemic events among patients with acute coronary syndromes or previous myocardial infarction. Spontaneous major bleeding and bleeding associated with urgent invasive procedures are concerns with ticagrelor, as with other antiplatelet drugs. The antiplatelet effects of ticagrelor cannot be reversed with platelet transfusion. A rapid-acting reversal agent would be useful. METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 1 trial, we evaluated intravenous PB2452, a monoclonal antibody fragment that binds ticagrelor with high affinity, as a ticagrelor reversal agent. We assessed platelet function in healthy volunteers before and after 48 hours of ticagrelor pretreatment and again after the administration of PB2452 or placebo. Platelet function was assessed with the use of light transmission aggregometry, a point-of-care P2Y12 platelet-reactivity test, and a vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein assay. RESULTS: Of the 64 volunteers who underwent randomization, 48 were assigned to receive PB2452 and 16 to receive placebo. After 48 hours of ticagrelor pretreatment, platelet aggregation was suppressed by approximately 80%. PB2452 administered as an initial intravenous bolus followed by a prolonged infusion (8, 12, or 16 hours) was associated with a significantly greater increase in platelet function than placebo, as measured by multiple assays. Ticagrelor reversal occurred within 5 minutes after the initiation of PB2452 and was sustained for more than 20 hours (P\u3c0.001 after Bonferroni adjustment across all time points for all assays). There was no evidence of a rebound in platelet activity after drug cessation. Adverse events related to the trial drug were limited mainly to issues involving the infusion site. CONCLUSIONS: In healthy volunteers, the administration of PB2452, a specific reversal agent for ticagrelor, provided immediate and sustained reversal of the antiplatelet effects of ticagrelor, as measured by multiple assays. The Next Generation Of U.S. Farm Policies

Clearly U.S. agriculture has excess capacity. U.S. consumption plus foreign sales were 5-10% less than production in 1981 and 82. Except for massive and expensive supply control, 1983 production would similarly exceed the weak current demand. Stocks of corn and rice at the end of the current marketing year will be about 50% of this year\u27s utilization. For wheat and cotton the carryover into next year will be about 70% of this years\u27 disappearance..

Structured oligo(aniline) nanofilms via ionic self-assembly

Conducting polymers have shown great potential for application in electronic devices. A major challenge in such applications is to control the supramolecular structures these materials form to optimise the functionality. In this work we probe the structure of oligo(aniline) thin films (of sub-μm thickness) drop cast on a silicon substrate using synchrotron surface diffraction. Self-assembly was induced through doping with an acid surfactant, bis(ethyl hexyl) phosphate (BEHP), resulting in the formation of well-ordered lamellae with the d-spacing ranging from 2.15 nm to 2.35 nm. The exact structural characteristics depended both on the oligomer chain length and film thickness, as well as the doping ratio. Complementary UV/Vis spectroscopy measurements confirm that such thin films retain their bulk electronic properties. Our results point to a simple and effective ionic self-assembly approach to prepare thin films with well-defined structures by tailoring parameters such as the oligomer molecular architecture, the nanofilm composition and the interfacial roughness

Dilepton-tagged jets in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions: A case study

    Get PDF
We study the A+B -> l+ l- + jet +X process in nucleus-nucleus collisions at relativistic energies. The dilepton as well as the jet will pass through the matter produced in such collisions. The recoiling dilepton will carry information about the kinematical features of the jet, and will thus prove to be a very effective tool in isolating in-medium effects such as energy-loss and fragmentation function modifications. We estimate the contributions due to correlated charm and bottom decay and we identify a window where they are small as compared to pairs from the NLO Drell-Yan process.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures Two figures modified, references adde
