Towards an Updatable Strategy Logic
This article is about temporal multi-agent logics. Several of these
formalisms have been already presented (ATL-ATL*, ATLsc, SL). They enable to
express the capacities of agents in a system to ensure the satisfaction of
temporal properties. Particularly, SL and ATLsc enable several agents to
interact in a context mixing the different strategies they play in a semantical
game. We generalize this possibility by proposing a new formalism, Updating
Strategy Logic (USL). In USL, an agent can also refine its own strategy. The
gain in expressive power rises the notion of "sustainable capacities" for
agents.
USL is built from SL. It mainly brings to SL the two following modifications:
semantically, the successor of a given state is not uniquely determined by the
data of one choice from each agent. Syntactically, we introduce in the language
an operator, called an "unbinder", which explicitely deletes the binding of a
strategy to an agent. We show that USL is strictly more expressive than SL.Comment: In Proceedings SR 2013, arXiv:1303.007
Cross-Identification of Stars with Unknown Proper Motions
The cross-identification of sources in separate catalogs is one of the most
basic tasks in observational astronomy. It is, however, surprisingly difficult
and generally ill-defined. Recently Budav\'ari & Szalay (2008) formulated the
problem in the realm of probability theory, and laid down the statistical
foundations of an extensible methodology. In this paper, we apply their
Bayesian approach to stars that, we know, can move measurably on the sky, with
detectable proper motion, and show how to associate their observations. We
study models on a sample of stars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, which allow
for an unknown proper motion per object, and demonstrate the improvements over
the analytic static model. Our models and conclusions are directly applicable
to upcoming surveys such as PanSTARRS, the Dark Energy Survey, Sky Mapper, and
the LSST, whose data sets will contain hundreds of millions of stars observed
multiple times over several years.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
A Deductive Verification Framework for Circuit-building Quantum Programs
While recent progress in quantum hardware open the door for significant
speedup in certain key areas, quantum algorithms are still hard to implement
right, and the validation of such quantum programs is a challenge. Early
attempts either suffer from the lack of automation or parametrized reasoning,
or target high-level abstract algorithm description languages far from the
current de facto consensus of circuit-building quantum programming languages.
As a consequence, no significant quantum algorithm implementation has been
currently verified in a scale-invariant manner. We propose Qbricks, the first
formal verification environment for circuit-building quantum programs,
featuring clear separation between code and proof, parametric specifications
and proofs, high degree of proof automation and allowing to encode quantum
programs in a natural way, i.e. close to textbook style. Qbricks builds on best
practice of formal verification for the classical case and tailor them to the
quantum case: we bring a new domain-specific circuit-building language for
quantum programs, namely Qbricks-DSL, together with a new logical specification
language Qbricks-Spec and a dedicated Hoare-style deductive verification rule
named Hybrid Quantum Hoare Logic. Especially, we introduce and intensively
build upon HOPS, a higher-order extension of the recent path-sum symbolic
representation, used for both specification and automation. To illustrate the
opportunity of Qbricks, we implement the first verified parametric
implementations of several famous and non-trivial quantum algorithms, including
the quantum part of Shor integer factoring (Order Finding - Shor-OF), quantum
phase estimation (QPE) - a basic building block of many quantum algorithms, and
Grover search. These breakthroughs were amply facilitated by the specification
and automated deduction principles introduced within Qbricks

Subsistence and metaphysics of the human person in Thomas Aquinas
This work examines the formation of a metaphysics of the human person in the thought of Thomas Aquinas. On one side it is generally agreed that the Thomistic thought on the person had a decisive influence on the modern understanding of man as a person, on the other side the term human person is not familiar of Aquinas and not subject to any particular development in his work. Indeed, the metaphysical approach of the human person in the Thomistic corpus is found in the theological texts in which Thomas defines the divine person maintening the affinity with man. This work of conceptualization deals with the Christian theme of man image of God using the analogy. In the Latin world, the various components of this rich tradition come together in the late sixth century around the figure of Boethius. From analogies on the mysteries of the Trinity and of Christ, Thomas is led to rethink the metaphysics of substance and subsistence inherited from the translation of the Greek notion of hypostasis made by Boethius. Ultimately, these analogies do not lead only to a metaphysics of the person subsisting in human nature, they found a true metaphysics of the human person by defining a human subsisting way
