Mining the ESO WFI and INT WFC archives for known Near Earth Asteroids. Mega-Precovery software
The ESO/MPG WFI and the INT WFC wide field archives comprising 330,000 images
were mined to search for serendipitous encounters of known Near Earth Asteroids
(NEAs) and Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs). A total of 152 asteroids (44
PHAs and 108 other NEAs) were identified using the PRECOVERY software, their
astrometry being measured on 761 images and sent to the Minor Planet Centre.
Both recoveries and precoveries were reported, including prolonged orbital arcs
for 18 precovered objects and 10 recoveries. We analyze all new opposition data
by comparing the orbits fitted before and after including our contributions. We
conclude the paper presenting Mega-Precovery, a new online service focused on
data mining of many instrument archives simultaneously for one or a few given
asteroids. A total of 28 instrument archives have been made available for
mining using this tool, adding together about 2.5 million images forming the
Mega-Archive.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomische Nachrichten (Sep 2012
Localization transition of random copolymers at interfaces
We consider adsorption of random copolymer chains onto an interface within
the model of Garel et al. Europhysics Letters 8, 9 (1989). By using the replica
method the adsorption of the copolymer at the interface is mapped onto the
problem of finding the ground state of a quantum mechanical Hamiltonian. To
study this ground state we introduce a novel variational principle for the
Green's function, which generalizes the well-known Rayleigh-Ritz method of
Quantum Mechanics to nonstationary states. Minimization with an appropriate
trial Green's function enables us to find the phase diagram for the
localization-delocalization transition for an ideal random copolymer at the
interface.Comment: 5 page
Non-Hermitian matrix description of the PT symmetric anharmonic oscillators
Schroedinger equation H \psi=E \psi with PT - symmetric differential operator
H=H(x) = p^2 + a x^4 + i \beta x^3 +c x^2+i \delta x = H^*(-x) on
L_2(-\infty,\infty) is re-arranged as a linear algebraic diagonalization at
a>0. The proof of this non-variational construction is given. Our Taylor series
form of \psi complements and completes the recent terminating solutions as
obtained for certain couplings \delta at the less common negative a.Comment: 18 pages, latex, no figures, thoroughly revised (incl. title), J.

X-ray diffraction measurements of the c-axis Debye-Waller factors of YBa2Cu3O7 and HgBa2CaCu2O6
We report the first application of x-rays to the measurement of the
temperature dependent Bragg peak intensities to obtain Debye-Waller factors on
high-temperature superconductors. Intensities of (0,0,l) peaks of YBa2Cu3O7 and
HgBa2CaCu2O6 thin films are measured to obtain the c-axis Debye-Waller factors.
While lattice constant and some Debye-Waller factor measurements on high Tc
superconductors show anomalies at the transition temperature, our measurements
by x-ray diffraction show a smooth transition of the c-axis Debye-Waller
factors through T. This suggests that the dynamic displacements of the
heavy elements along the c-axis direction in these compounds do not have
anomalies at Tc. This method in combination with measurements by other
techniques will give more details concerning dynamics of the lattice.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. To be published in Physical Review B (Brief

Observational Limits on Machos in the Galactic Halo
We present final results from the first phase of the EROS search for
gravitational microlensing of stars in the Magellanic Clouds by unseen
deflectors (machos: MAssive Compact Halo Objects). The search is sensitive to
events with time scales between 15 minutes and 200 days corresponding to
deflector masses in the range 1.e-7 to a few solar masses. Two events were
observed that are compatible with microlensing by objects of mass of about 0.1
Mo. By comparing the results with the expected number of events for various
models of the Galaxy, we conclude that machos in the mass range [1.e-7, 0.02]
Mo make up less than 20% (95% C.L.) of the Halo dark matter.Comment: 4 pages, 3 Postscript figures, to be published in Astronomy &

Observation of periodic variable stars towards the galactic spiral arms by EROS II
We present the results of a massive variability search based on a photometric
survey of a six square degree region along the Galactic plane at (, ) and (, ). This
survey was performed in the framework of the EROS II (Exp\'erience de Recherche
d'Objets Sombres) microlensing program. The variable stars were found among
1,913,576 stars that were monitored between April and June 1998 in two
passbands, with an average of 60 measurements. A new period-search technique is
proposed which makes use of a statistical variable that characterizes the
overall regularity of the flux versus phase diagram. This method is well suited
when the photometric data are unevenly distributed in time, as is our case.
1,362 objects whose luminosity varies were selected. Among them we identified 9
Cepheids, 19 RR Lyrae, 34 Miras, 176 eclipsing binaries and 266 Semi-Regular
stars. Most of them are newly identified objects. The cross-identification with
known catalogues has been performed. The mean distance of the RR Lyrae is
estimated to be kpc undergoing an average absorption of
magnitudes. This distance is in good agreement with the one
of disc stars which contribute to the microlensing source star population. Our
catalogue and light curves are available electronically from the CDS,
Strasbourg and from our Web site http://eros.in2p3.fr.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, accepted in A&A (april 2002
PT-symetrically regularized Eckart,Poeschl-Teller and Hulthen potentials
Version 1: The well known Eckart's singular s-wave potential is
PT-symmetrically regularized and continued to the whole real line. The new
model remains exactly solvable and its bound states remain proportional to
Jacobi polynomials. Its real and discrete spectrum exhibits several unusual
features.
Version 2: Parity times time-reversal symmetry of complex Hamiltonians with
real spectra is usually interpreted as a weaker mathematical substitute for
Hermiticity. Perhaps an equally important role is played by the related
strengthened analyticity assumptions. In a constructive illustration we
complexify a few potentials solvable only in s-wave. Then we continue their
domain from semi-axis to the whole axis and get the new exactly solvable
models. Their energies come out real as expected. The new one-dimensional
spectra themselves differ quite significantly from their s-wave predecessors.Comment: Original 10-page letter ``PT-symmetrized exact solution of the

Combined Analysis of the Binary-Lens Caustic-Crossing Event MACHO 98-SMC-1
We fit the data for the binary-lens microlensing event MACHO 98-SMC-1 from 5
different microlensing collaborations and find two distinct solutions
characterized by binary separation d and mass ratio q: (d,q)=(0.54,0.50) and
(d,q)=(3.65,0.36), where d is in units of the Einstein radius. However, the
relative proper motion of the lens is very similar in the two solutions, 1.30
km/s/kpc and 1.48 km/s/kpc, thus confirming that the lens is in the Small
Magellanic Cloud. The close binary can be either rotating or approximately
static but the wide binary must be rotating at close its maximum allowed rate
to be consistent with all the data. We measure limb-darkening coefficients for
five bands ranging from I to V. As expected, these progressively decrease with
rising wavelength. This is the first measurement of limb darkening for a
metal-poor A star.Comment: 29 pages + 9 figures + 2 tables, submitted to Ap
An exactly solvable quantum-lattice model with a tunable degree of nonlocality
An array of N subsequent Laguerre polynomials is interpreted as an
eigenvector of a non-Hermitian tridiagonal Hamiltonian with real spectrum
or, better said, of an exactly solvable N-site-lattice cryptohermitian
Hamiltonian whose spectrum is known as equal to the set of zeros of the N-th
Laguerre polynomial. The two key problems (viz., the one of the ambiguity and
the one of the closed-form construction of all of the eligible inner products
which make Hermitian in the respective {\em ad hoc} Hilbert spaces) are
discussed. Then, for illustration, the first four simplest, parametric
definitions of inner products with and are explicitly
displayed. In mathematical terms these alternative inner products may be
perceived as alternative Hermitian conjugations of the initial N-plet of
Laguerre polynomials. In physical terms the parameter may be interpreted as
a measure of the "smearing of the lattice coordinates" in the model.Comment: 35 p
Optical investigation on the electronic structures of Y_{2}Ru_{2}O_{7}, CaRuO_{3}, SrRuO_{3}, and Bi_{2}Ru_{2}O_{7}
We investigated the electronic structures of the bandwidth-controlled
ruthenates, YRuO, CaRuO, SrRuO, and BiRuO, by optical conductivity analysis in a wide energy region of 5 meV
12 eV. We could assign optical transitions from the systematic changes
of the spectra and by comparison with the O 1 x-ray absorption data. We
estimated some physical parameters, such as the on-site Coulomb repulsion
energy and the crystal-field splitting energy. These parameters show that the
4 orbitals should be more extended than 3 ones. These results are also
discussed in terms of the Mott-Hubbard model.Comment: 12 pages (1 table), 3 figure
