Effect of Auricular Acupressure on Peri- and Early Postmenopausal Women with Anxiety: A Double-Blinded, Randomized, and Controlled Pilot Study
We tested effects of auricular acupressure on peri- and early postmenopausal women with anxiety (PPWA). Fifty PPWA were randomly assigned to the auricular acupressure group (AG) or the sham group (SG). After 3 meals and before sleep every day for 4 weeks, the AG received auricular acupressure on the bilateral ear shenmen and subcortex points for 3âmin per point on alternating ears. The SG received sham auricular acupressure. The Alprazolam was reduced from 0.5âmg/day at baseline to 0.3âmg/day 4 weeks after auricular acupressure (4âW) in the AG (P < .05) whereas maintained at 0.5âmg/day in the SG (P > .05). The Zolpidem was reduced from 3.0âmg/day at baseline to 1.5âmg/day at 4âW (P < .05) whereas was reduced from 2.4âmg/day to 1.9âmg/day at 4âW in the SG (P > .05), thus, significant tapering medication, suggesting auricular acupressure is helpful to PPWA
From Teachersâ Views to Explore the Implementation of Energy Education in Taiwanâs Elementary Schools
This study intended to explore the implementation of promoting âenergy educationâ in Taiwanâs elementary schools. The research adopted a questionnaire (Likert five-point scale) from teachersâ view in three dimensions to construct examination. The 45 participants come from 10 different primary schools distributed across Taiwan, which participate in energy education program in the second period (2015-2017). The data was analyzed by ANOVA, mean and standard deviations of the viewpoints of the participants in the energy education learning achievement of the primary schools. The first findings in this research is, the program of energy education was most effective in âenergy attitudeâ (M=4.282, SD=0.814), followed by âenergy awarenessâ (M=4.049, SD=0.720) and âenergy behaviorâ (M=3.983, SD=0.875). It shows that students have positive energy attitude, but they were relatively weak at energy saving behavior. Secondly, there is statistically significant difference in overall students learning performance with urban areas are higher than rural areas. Finally, it is suggested that in addition to strengthen energy attitudes and energy awareness, we should encourage students to take action in save energy in their daily life. Furthermore, we should invest more resources to rural areas to balance the studentsâ performances between urban and rural areas

Investigations of urethral sphincter activity in mice with bladder hyperalgesia before and after drug administration of gabapentin.
PurposeThis study investigated the effect of gabapentin on lower urinary tract dysfunction focusing on urethral activities and cystitis-induced hyperalgesia in a mouse model of painful bladder syndrome/interstitial cystitis (PBS/IC). The electromyography (EMG) of external urethral sphincter (EUS) was difficult to obtain, but contained useful information to examine the drug effect in mice.MethodsFemale C57BL/6J mice were intraperitoneally (ip) administration with either saline or 200 mg/kg of cyclophosphamide (CYP) 48 h before experimental evaluation. Cystitis mice were treated with administration of gabapentin (25 or 50 mg/kg, ip). Cystometry and EUS EMG were obtained and analyzed during continuous bladder infusion. The visceral pain-related visceromotor reflex (VMR) was recorded in response to isotonic bladder distension.ResultsCystitis mice showed shorter inter-contraction intervals and increased occurrence of non-voiding contractions during bladder infusion, with increased VMR during isotonic bladder distension, indicating cystitis-induced bladder hyperalgesia. Gabapentin (50 mg/kg) suppressed effects of CYP on cystometry, but not on EUS EMG activity, during bladder infusion. The effect on urodynamic recordings lasted 4 h. VMR was significantly reduced by gabapentin.ConclusionsThe present study showed that CYP-induced cystitis in mice is a model of visceral hyperalgesia affecting detrusor contractions, not urethral activations. The technique of using EUS EMG to evaluate the drug effects on urethral activities is novel and useful for future investigations. Gabapentin can be as a potential treatment for detrusor overactivity and PBS/IC
Cell Type-Dependent RNA Recombination Frequency in the Japanese Encephalitis Virus
Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is one of approximately 70 flaviviruses, frequently causing symptoms involving the central nervous system. Mutations of its genomic RNA frequently occur during viral replication, which is believed to be a force contributing to viral evolution. Nevertheless, accumulating evidences show that some JEV strains may have actually arisen from RNA recombination between genetically different populations of the virus. We have demonstrated that RNA recombination in JEV occurs unequally in different cell types. In the present study, viral RNA fragments transfected into as well as viral RNAs synthesized in mosquito cells were shown not to be stable, especially in the early phase of infection possibly via cleavage by exoribonuclease. Such cleaved small RNA fragments may be further degraded through an RNA interference pathway triggered by viral double-stranded RNA during replication in mosquito cells, resulting in a lower frequency of RNA recombination in mosquito cells compared to that which occurs in mammalian cells. In fact, adjustment of viral RNA to an appropriately lower level in mosquito cells prevents overgrowth of the virus and is beneficial for cells to survive the infection. Our findings may also account for the slower evolution of arboviruses as reported previously
Design And Fabrication of Condenser Microphone Using Wafer Transfer And Micro-electroplating Technique
A novel fabrication process, which uses wafer transfer and
micro-electroplating technique, has been proposed and tested. In this paper,
the effects of the diaphragm thickness and stress, the air-gap thickness, and
the area ratio of acoustic holes to backplate on the sensitivity of the
condenser microphone have been demonstrated since the performance of the
microphone depends on these parameters. The microphone diaphragm has been
designed with a diameter and thickness of 1.9 mm and 0.6 m, respectively,
an air-gap thickness of 10 m, and a 24% area ratio of acoustic holes to
backplate. To obtain a lower initial stress, the material used for the
diaphragm is polyimide. The measured sensitivities of the microphone at the
bias voltages of 24 V and 12 V are -45.3 and -50.2 dB/Pa (at 1 kHz),
respectively. The fabricated microphone shows a flat frequency response
