    Laplacian spectral characterization of roses

A rose graph is a graph consisting of cycles that all meet in one vertex. We show that except for two specific examples, these rose graphs are determined by the Laplacian spectrum, thus proving a conjecture posed by Lui and Huang [F.J. Liu and Q.X. Huang, Laplacian spectral characterization of 3-rose graphs, Linear Algebra Appl. 439 (2013), 2914--2920]. We also show that if two rose graphs have a so-called universal Laplacian matrix with the same spectrum, then they must be isomorphic. In memory of Horst Sachs (1927-2016), we show the specific case of the latter result for the adjacency matrix by using Sachs' theorem and a new result on the number of matchings in the disjoint union of paths

Baicalin Attenuates Oxygen–Glucose Deprivation/Reoxygenation–Induced Injury by Modulating the BDNF-TrkB/PI3K/Akt and MAPK/Erk1/2 Signaling Axes in Neuron–Astrocyte Cocultures

Background: Baicalin (BCL), a candidate drug for ischemic stroke, has been indicated to protect neurons by promoting brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). However, the cellular source of BDNF release promoted by baicalin and its detailed protective mechanism after ischemia/reperfusion remains to be studied. The aim of this study was to investigate the neuroprotective mechanisms of baicalin against oxygen–glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) in a neuron–astrocyte coculture system and to explore whether the BDNF-TrkB pathway is involved. Methods and Results: A neuron–astrocyte coculture system was established to elucidate the role of astrocytes in neurons under OGD/R conditions. The results demonstrated that astrocytes became reactive astrocytes and released more BDNF in the coculture system to attenuate neuronal apoptosis and injury after OGD/R. BCL maintained the characteristics of reactive astrocytes and obviously increased the expression of cyclic AMP response element-binding protein (CREB) and the levels of BDNF in the coculture system after OGD/R. To further verify whether BDNF binding to its receptor tyrosine kinase receptor B (TrkB) was required for the neuroprotective effect of baicalin, we examined the effect of ANA-12, an antagonist of TrkB, on NA system injury, including oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis induced by OGD/R. The results showed that treatment of NA systems with ANA-12 significantly attenuated the neuroprotection of BCL. The phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)/extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathways are two important downstream cascades of signaling pathways activated by BDNF binding to TrkB. We investigated the expressions of TrkB, PI3K, Akt, MAPK, and ERK. The results demonstrated that baicalin significantly increased the expressions of TrkB, PI3K/AKT, and MAPK/ERK.Conclusion: The neuroprotective effects of baicalin against oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis were improved by astrocytes, mainly mediated by increasing the release of BDNF and its associated receptor TrkB and downstream signaling regulators PI3K/Akt and MAPK/ERK1/2

TAW: cost-effective threshold authentication with weights for internet of things

In the Internet of Things, based on the collaboration of sensing nodes, sensing data are collected and transmitted. The collaboration of sensing nodes also plays an important role in the safeguard of the Internet of Things. Owing to the limited ability of the single sensing node, the threshold authentication based on the collaboration of sensing nodes can improve the trust of security authentication of sensing nodes. The current threshold authentication schemes may require high-computational complexity, and more importantly, most of them are instantiated by membership authentication. It’s challenging to apply the current state of the arts to the case where sensing nodes with various weights join together to fulfill a relatively lightweight authentication. In this paper, we first design a communication key distribution scheme for sensing networks based on a symmetric operator. Using the permutation function, the scheme is able to generate characteristic sequences to improve the efficiency of key distribution in sensing networks. In addition, we propose a threshold authentication scheme based on weights, in which the higher weight represents the more important role in authentication. Our authentication scheme only requires lightweight operations, so that, it is extremely friendly to the IoT nodes with restricted computation power. The security analysis and the case verification demonstrate that our novel authentication protects IoT nodes without yielding significantly computational burden to the nodes

Bone-like apatite formed on the surface of pure titanium pretreated with NaOH solution after having been immersed in simulated body fluid (SBF). In the present study, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement was used to investigate the nucleation and growth of apatite on chemically treated pure titanium immersed in the SBF solution. An appropriate equivalent circuit model was constructed to describe the nucleation and growth of apatite. It was found that EIS is a useful method for investigating the nucleation and growth of bone-like apatite on pure titanium pretreated with NaOH solution. It may quantify apatite growth on pretreated titanium substrates. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.link_to_subscribed_fulltex
