    Mixing state and particle hygroscopicity of organic-dominated aerosols over the Pearl River Delta region in China

    Simultaneous measurements of aerosol hygroscopicity and particle-phase chemical composition were performed at a suburban site over the Pearl River Delta region in the late summer of 2016 using a self-assembled hygroscopic tandem differential mobility analyzer (HTDMA) and an Aerodyne quadruple aerosol chemical speciation monitor (ACSM), respectively. The hygroscopic growth factor (HGF) of the Aitken mode (30 nm, 60 nm) and accumulation mode (100 nm, 145 nm) particles were obtained under 90% relative humidity (RH). An external mixture was observed for particles of every size during this study, with a dominant mode of more-hygroscopic (MH) particles, as aged aerosols dominated due to the anthropogenic influence. The HGF of lesshygroscopic (LH) mode particles increased, while their number fractions decreased during the daytime due to a reduced degree of external mixing that probably resulted from the condensation of gaseous species. These LH mode particles in the early morning or late afternoon could be possibly dominated by carbonaceous material emitted from local automobile exhaust during rush hours. During polluted days with air masses flowing mainly from the coastal areas, the chemical composition of aerosols had a clear diurnal variation and a strong correlation with the mean HGF. Closure analysis was carried out between the HTDMA-measured HGF and the ACSM-derived hygroscopicity using various approximations for the hygroscopic growth factor of organic compounds (HGF(org)). Considering the assumptions regarding the differences in the mass fraction of each component between PM1 and 145 nm particles, the hygroscopicity-composition closure was achieved using an HGF(org) of 1.26 for the organic material in the 145 nm particles and a simple linear relationship between the HGForg and the oxidation level inferred from the O : C ratio of the organic material was suggested. Compared with the results from other environments, HGF(org) obtained from our measurements appeared to be less sensitive to the variation of its oxidation level, which is, however, similar to the observations in the urban atmosphere of other megacities in China. This finding suggests that the anthropogenic precursors or the photooxidation mechanisms might differ significantly between the suburban and urban atmosphere in China and those in other background environments. This may lead to different characteristics of the oxidation products in secondary organic aerosols (SOA) and therefore to a different relationship between the HGF(org) and its O : C ratio.Peer reviewe

    A Long-Lived Accretionary Process during the Amalgamation of the North China Craton: Insights from Neoarchean–Paleoproterozoic Polyphase Magmatism in the Lüliang Complex

    There has been a long debate regarding the timing of the final amalgamation of the North China Craton, which is considered to have occurred either during the Neoarchean or Paleoproterozoic era. One major point of contention is whether there existed a long-lived subduction lasting through the Neoarchean to Paleoproterozoic. The Lüliang Complex contains multiphases of magmatism and thus represents the most viable region to address this controversy. In this study, we carried geochronological and geochemical analysis on the representative granitoids. Secondary ion mass spectrometry U–Pb dating revealed four distinct granitoid groups emplaced at 2531 ± 4, 2189–2173, 2027 ± 25, and 1852 ± 41 Ma, respectively. Notably, the 2531 Ma granitic gneiss was identified for the first time in this region. Based on the geochemical characteristics, the granitoids can be divided into two types. The 2531 and 2027 Ma groups display I-type features, while the 2189–2173 and 1852 Ma groups exhibit A-type geochemical affinities. Both I-type groups exhibit enrichment in Rb, depletion in Nb, Ta, and Ti, moderate fractionated REE patterns, substantial negative Eu anomalies, low Sr/Y ratios, and positive εHf(t) (+3.51 to +5.53 and +5.59 to +7.32, respectively), indicating that they were generated from partial melting of the juvenile mafic crust. In contrast, the 2189–2173 Ma granitoids belong to A2-type and were most likely generated by the partial melting of felsic rocks in the back-arc region, while the 1852 Ma granitoids belong to A1-type and were most possibly the result of partial melting of mafic-intermediate rocks during the post-collisional stage. Based on the records of A-type granitic magmatism and the ~1950 Ma peak metamorphism throughout the Trans-North China Orogen, we propose that a long-lived subduction process (2531–1950 Ma) can mostly explain the existing geological phenomena. It is likely that the subduction between the Eastern and Western Blocks should have commenced at ~2531 Ma, followed by a long-lived subduction. The two blocks ultimately collided with each other to form the North China Craton at ~1950 Ma, which triggered post-collisional exhumation and partial melting at ~1852 Ma

    Effect of the surface-plasmon-exciton coupling and charge transfer process on the photoluminescence of metal-semiconductor nanostructures

The direct coating of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) induces remarkable enhancement of the surface exciton (SX) emissions from the ZnO NRs. Meanwhile, the charge transfer process between ZnO and Ag also leads to notable increment of blue and violet emissions from Zn interstitial defects. A thin SiO2 blocking layer inserted between the ZnO and Ag has been demonstrated to be able to efficiently suppress the defect emission enhancement caused by the direct contact of metal-semiconductor, without weakening the surface-plasmon-exciton coupling effect. A theoretical model considering the type of contacts formed between metals, ZnO and blocking layer is proposed to interpret the change of the PL spectra

    Risk factors for thrombotic events in systemic lupus erythematosus patients with antiphospholipid antibodies: insights from morphometric measurements of carotid arteries

    ObjectiveTo identify the correlation between thrombosis and atherosclerosis in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients with antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs) (SLE/aPLs) through high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-MRI) of the carotid artery.MethodsA single-center, cross-sectional study was conducted. We collected consecutive patients with SLE/aPLs and healthy controls who underwent carotid HR-MRI examinations. The morphometric characteristics of the common carotid artery (CCA), internal carotid artery (ICA), external carotid artery (ECA), and carotid bulb (Sinus) were measured, and the differences in morphometric parameters between different groups were analyzed.ResultsA total of 144 carotid arteries were analyzed. Compared with the control group, the wall area, wall thickness (WT and WTmax), and normalized wall index of CCA, ICA, ECA, and Sinus were increased in patients with SLE/aPLs, and the total vascular area (TVA) of CCA, ICA, and Sinus, and the bifurcation angle (BIFA) of ICA-ECA were also increased. A negative lupus anticoagulant (LAC) (with or without positive anticardiolipin antibody (aCL) or anti-β2glycoprotein antibody (aβ2GPI)) contributed to illustrating lower increased TVA and thickened vessel walls of CCA and ICA in SLE/aPLs patients without thrombotic events. Logistic regression analysis showed that WTmaxSinus and WTmaxGlobal were independent risk factors for thrombotic events in SLE/aPLs patients. The receiver operator characteristic curve showed that the cut-off value of WTmaxSinus was 2.855 mm, and WTmaxGlobal was 3.370 mm.ConclusionHR-MRI ensures the complete and accurate measurement of carotid morphometric parameters. Compared with the control group, the carotid artery in patients with SLE/aPLs is mainly characterized by diffusely thickened vessel walls, and the patients with thrombotic events showed additional higher vascular area of CCA and ICA, and BIFA of ICA-ECA without significant change in lumen area. The carotid arteries of SLE/aPLs patients with thrombotic events exhibited significant vessel wall thickening in all segments except ECA compared to those without thrombotic events. LAC-negative and non-thrombotic events distinguish relatively early atherosclerosis in the carotid arteries in patients with SLE/aPLs. Patients with SLE/aPLs that possess circumscribed thickened carotid vessel walls (>3.370 mm), particularly thickened at the Sinus (>2.855 mm), may require management strategies for the risk of thrombotic events
