Protocol-Guided Learning as a Facilitator of the Integration of Project-Based Learning into Chinese Compulsory Education
Currently, there are growing conversations about how to successfully integrate project-based learning into regular curricular instruction at the compulsory education level in China. Protocol-guided learning, which originated in Chinese basic education, has proven to be one of the most productive teaching methods in recent decades. It shares comparable educational philosophies with project-based learning and has the potential to compensate for the inadequacy of the latter’s application in Chinese compulsory education by providing effective implementation paths for it. The purpose of this article is to reveal the significance of the protocol-guided learning method for the successful implementation of project-based learning in China by pinpointing the issues the project-based learning approach faces, delineating the characteristics of protocol-guided learning, and expounding on its potential roles in supporting the application of project-based learning in Chinese compulsory education schools
Large Language Models are Superpositions of All Characters: Attaining Arbitrary Role-play via Self-Alignment
Considerable efforts have been invested in augmenting the role-playing
proficiency of open-source large language models (LLMs) by emulating
proprietary counterparts. Nevertheless, we posit that LLMs inherently harbor
role-play capabilities, owing to the extensive knowledge of characters and
potential dialogues ingrained in their vast training corpora. Thus, in this
study, we introduce Ditto, a self-alignment method for role-play. Ditto
capitalizes on character knowledge, encouraging an instruction-following LLM to
simulate role-play dialogues as a variant of reading comprehension. This method
creates a role-play training set comprising 4,000 characters, surpassing the
scale of currently available datasets by tenfold regarding the number of roles.
Subsequently, we fine-tune the LLM using this self-generated dataset to augment
its role-playing capabilities. Upon evaluating our meticulously constructed and
reproducible role-play benchmark and the roleplay subset of MT-Bench, Ditto, in
various parameter scales, consistently maintains a consistent role identity and
provides accurate role-specific knowledge in multi-turn role-play
conversations. Notably, it outperforms all open-source role-play baselines,
showcasing performance levels comparable to advanced proprietary chatbots.
Furthermore, we present the first comprehensive cross-supervision alignment
experiment in the role-play domain, revealing that the intrinsic capabilities
of LLMs confine the knowledge within role-play. Meanwhile, the role-play styles
can be easily acquired with the guidance of smaller models. We open-source

Neuronal synapses are key devices for transmitting and processing information in the nervous system. Synaptic plasticity, generally regarded as the cellular basis of learning and memory, involves changes of subcellular structures that take place at the nanoscale. High-resolution imaging methods, especially electron microscopy (EM), have allowed for quantitative analysis of such nanoscale structures in different types of synapses. In particular, the semi-ordered organization of neurotransmitter receptors and their interacting scaffolds in the postsynaptic density have been characterized for both excitatory and inhibitory synapses by studies using various EM techniques such as immuno-EM, electron tomography of high-pressure freezing and freeze-substituted samples, and cryo electron tomography. These techniques, in combination with new correlative approaches, will further facilitate our understanding of the molecular organization underlying diverse functions of neuronal synapses
Accumulation of Dense Core Vesicles in Hippocampal Synapses Following Chronic Inactivity.
The morphology and function of neuronal synapses are regulated by neural activity, as manifested in activity-dependent synapse maturation and various forms of synaptic plasticity. Here we employed cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) to visualize synaptic ultrastructure in cultured hippocampal neurons and investigated changes in subcellular features in response to chronic inactivity, a paradigm often used for the induction of homeostatic synaptic plasticity. We observed a more than 2-fold increase in the mean number of dense core vesicles (DCVs) in the presynaptic compartment of excitatory synapses and an almost 20-fold increase in the number of DCVs in the presynaptic compartment of inhibitory synapses after 2 days treatment with the voltage-gated sodium channel blocker tetrodotoxin (TTX). Short-term treatment with TTX and the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antagonist amino-5-phosphonovaleric acid (AP5) caused a 3-fold increase in the number of DCVs within 100 nm of the active zone area in excitatory synapses but had no significant effects on the overall number of DCVs. In contrast, there were very few DCVs in the postsynaptic compartments of both synapse types under all conditions. These results are consistent with a role for presynaptic DCVs in activity-dependent synapse maturation. We speculate that these accumulated DCVs can be released upon reactivation and may contribute to homeostatic metaplasticity
Rectal hemangiopericytoma in a 37-year-old woman: a case report and review of the literature
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Hemangiopericytoma is an uncommon perivascular tumor. Rectal Hemangiopericytomas are extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, only two cases have been reported in the literature.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report the case of a 37-year-old Asian woman with an Hemangiopericytoma rising from the anterior wall of her rectum. Abdominopelvic computed tomography showed a 7.4 cm solid mass between her uterus and her rectum. Heterogeneous gradual enhancement after intravenous injection of contrast material was noted with several tortuous vessels around her tumor. Intra-operative findings indicated a capsule and well-circumscribed solid tumor connecting with the anterior wall of her rectum by a small pedicle. With immunohistochemical stains, her tumor cells reacted positive for Bcl-2, CD34, and ki67 and negative for CD10, CD117, S100, and Desmin. Follow-up computed tomography scans have shown no tumor recurrence or metastasis signs.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Rectal Hemangiopericytoma is a rare tumor with non-specific imaging findings. Hemangiopericytomas should be included in the differential list when a massive tumor with heterogeneously gradual enhancement in the regions of the rectum is encountered.</p
Impact of the implementation of carbon emission trading on corporate financial performance : Evidence from listed companies in China
With the development of ecological paradigm coupled with the relentless implementation of myriad environmental policies in China, the rapid development of carbon emission trading and carbon trading market has had a vital impact on the financial performance of enterprises at the microlevel. This study has sampled the A-share listed companies in China, from 2009 to 2018, and adopted the difference-in-difference (DID) method to investigate the effect of the carbon emission trading on corporate financial performance from the microlevel. Evidence showed that the implementation of carbon emission trading effectively improved the total asset-liability ratio of enterprises, though it reduced the value of the current capital market. Moreover, in the regions under strict legal environment, the enhancement effect of the total asset-liability ratio was more obvious, whereas in the regions under loose legal environment, the reduction effect of the value of the capital market was more obvious. Further analysis showed that the implementation of carbon emission trading could not promote Chinese enterprises to increase R&D investment. Hence the implementation of carbon emission trading has improved the level of non-business income of enterprises incorporated into the trading system, but its impact on the investment income of enterprises was not significant.Peer reviewe
Transversal Propagation Behaviors of Helical Edge States In a QSH System
The transversal propagation of the edge states in a two-dimensional quantum
spin Hall system are classified by decay characteristic quantity . Two
different modes of the helical edge states exhibit distinct behaviors. The
penetration depth is momentum dependent in normal edge states. The finite size
gap decays monotonously with sample width, leading to the normal size effect.
In contrast, the penetration depth maintains a uniform minimal value in the
special edge states with much shorter length. The finite size gap decays
non-monotonously with width, leading to the anomalous finite size effect. Real
materials are compared in the phase diagram, which explicitly demonstrates
their differences. We also propose an intuitive way to search the special edge

GeohashTile: Vector Geographic Data Display Method Based on Geohash
© 2020 MDPI AG. All rights reserved. In the development of geographic information-based applications for mobile devices, achieving better access speed and visual effects is the main research aim. In this paper, we propose a new geographic data display method based on Geohash, namely GeohashTile, to improve the performance of traditional geographic data display methods in data indexing, data compression, and the projection of different granularities. First, we use the Geohash encoding system to represent coordinates, as well as to partition and index large-scale geographic data. The data compression and tile encoding is accomplished by Geohash. Second, to realize a direct conversion between Geohash and screen-pixel coordinates, we adopt the relative position projection method. Finally, we improve the calculation and rendering efficiency by using the intermediate result caching method. To evaluate the GeohashTile method, we have implemented the client and the server of the GeohashTile system, which is also evaluated in a real-world environment. The results show that Geohash encoding can accurately represent latitude and longitude coordinates in vector maps, while the GeohashTile framework has obvious advantages when requesting data volume and average load time compared to the state-of-the-art GeoTile system
Broad bandwidth of perceptual learning in second-order contrast modulation detection
Comparing characteristics of learning in first- and second-order systems might inform us about different neural plasticity in the two systems. In the current study, we aim to determine the properties of perceptual learning in second-order contrast modulation detection in normal adults. We trained nine observers to detect second-order gratings at an envelope modulation spatial frequency of 8 cycles/8 with their nondominant eyes. We found that, although training generated the largest improvements around the trained frequency, contrast sensitivity over a broad range of spatial frequencies also improved, with a 4.09-octave bandwidth of perceptual learning, exhibiting specificity to the trained spatial frequency as well as a relatively large degree of generalization. The improvements in the modulation sensitivity function (MSF) were not significantly different between the trained and untrained eyes. Furthermore, training did not significantly change subjects' ability in detecting firstorder gratings. Our results suggest that perceptual learning in second-order detection might occur at the postchannel level in binocular neurons, possibly through reducing the internal noise of the visual system
