    A new optimization algorithm for network component analysis based on convex programming

NCA is a method that can resolve the problem of blind source separation when the mixing matrix instead has a known sparse structure despite the correlation among the source signals. The original NCA algorithm relies on alternating least squares (ALS) and suffers from local convergence as well as slow convergence. In this paper, we develop new and more robust NCA algorithms by incorporating additional signal constraints. In particular, we introduce the biologically sound constraints that all nonzero entries in the connectivity network are positive. Our new approach formulates a convex optimization problem which can be solved efficiently and effectively by fast convex programming algorithms. We verify the effectiveness and robustness of our new approach using simulations and gene regulatory network reconstruction from experimental yeast cell cycle microarray data. ©2009 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    This thesis develops a system for describing intonation in Cantonese, a language having six phonological tones employing both pitch and slope. It analyses the utterance intonation contour into major intonation units, intonation units and feet. It defines what criteria those units meet and how they relate to each other. The intonation contours, constructed with a string of lexical tones, are described in terms of prosodic units which separate themselves in terms of pitch height and pitch span. The demarcation of the units is an innovation of the thesis. The different F0 values of identical phonological tones in an utterance are found to be in gradual descent if they are within an intonation group, and an intonation group is depicted more clearly when the two fitted lines which cover the top and the bottom are parallel and declined. A major intonation group is the largest prosodic unit in utterances. It is decided by a larger size of resetting of pitch span. An intonation group and a major intonation group each represent a unit of information which is semantically and syntactically coherent. The most prominent syllable in an intonation group is the tonic. An acoustic analysis of all possible combinations of the lexical tones of disyllabic and trisyllabic tonal sequences shows that tonal coarticulation is an important factor in modifying the F0 contours. The modification can affect both the pitch height and the slope of the F0 contours, and is also realised in both anticipatory and carryover effects. Prominence is examined, both at the level of words and of utterances, and a description of its prosodic parameters is developed with supporting evidence from the discussion of tonics

After a discussion on their construction and classical mechanics, we obtain exact, normalisable bound states for specific values of the energy.     Protective effects of lycium barbarum polysaccharides on cerebral edema and blood-brain barrier disruption after ischemic stroke

    Young Investigators Symposium I (Y3) - Di YangBACKGROUND: Ischemic stroke is a destructive cerebrovascular disease and one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The long term disability after stroke induces heavy burden both to the patients and the society. Yet, no effective neuroprotective agents are available. The polysaccharides extracted from the fruits of wolfberry, Lycium barbarum (LBP), showed neuroprotective and immune-modulative functions. We aim to evaluate the protective effects of LBP in experimental stroke using a focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) model. METHODS: C57BL/6N mice were subjected to 2 h of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) followed by 22 h of reperfusion. Prior to ischemia induction, animals were treated with either vehicle (PBS) or LBP daily for 7 days. Mice were evaluated for neurological deficits just before sacrifice. Brains were harvested for infarct size estimation, water content measurement and immunohistochemical analysis as well as Western blot experiments. Evans blue (EB) extravasation experiment was performed to determine blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption after MCAO. RESULTS: LBP treatment significantly improved neurological scores and decreased infarct size, hemispheric swelling and water content as well as reduced EB extravasation. In addition, fewer apoptotic cells were identified in the LBP-treated brains by TUNEL assay. Immunoreactivity for aquaporin-4 and glial fibrillary acidic protein were also significantly decreased in LBP-treated brains. We further observed a reduction of nuclear factor-κB translocation and IκB expression after LBP treatment. CONCLUSION: Seven-day LBP pre-treatment effectively improved neurological deficits, decreased infarct size and cerebral edema as well as protected the brain from BBB disruption, aquaporin water channel up-regulation and glial activation. The protective effects of LBP might partially act through its anti-inflammatory effects. The present study suggests that LBP may be used as a preventive neuroprotectant for ischemic stroke.postprin

    A study of the effectiveness of telepsychiatry-based culturally sensitive collaborative treatment of depressed Chinese Americans

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Chinese American patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) tend to underutilize mental health services and are more likely to seek help in primary care settings than from mental health specialists. Our team has reported that Culturally Sensitive Collaborative Treatment (CSCT) is effective in improving recognition and treatment engagement of depressed Chinese Americans in primary care. The current study builds on this prior research by incorporating telemedicine technology into the CSCT model.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>We propose a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the acceptability and effectiveness of a telepsychiatry-based culturally sensitive collaborative treatment (T-CSCT) intervention targeted toward Chinese Americans. Patients meeting the study's eligibility criteria will receive either treatment as usual or the intervention under investigation. The six-month intervention involves: 1) an initial psychiatric interview using a culturally sensitive protocol via videoconference; 2) eight scheduled phone visits with a care manager assigned to the patient, who will monitor the patient's progress, as well as medication side effects and dosage if applicable; and 3) collaboration between the patient's PCP, psychiatrist, and care manager. Outcome measures include depressive symptom severity as well as patient and PCP satisfaction with the telepsychiatry-based care management service.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>The study investigates the T-CSCT model, which we believe will increase the feasibility and practicality of the CSCT model by adopting telemedicine technology.
