The CICC Information system is an interactive media project simulated to be provided by the Chinese Information and Culture Center (CICC). It provides various Chinese information and the CICC services via the telecommunication network between the end-users\u27 computer and the terminal of the CICC. Through this connection, the user can not only search the Chinese art and culture information they are interested in, but also acquire the services providing by the CICC Library, Taipei Gallery and Taipei Theater. The intention of this project is to design an electronic information system for the real world. Both interface design and audio-visual aspect are my concerns

Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy: A Case Report

    Get PDF
Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a maternally inherited mitochondrial disease that primarily affects the optic nerve, causing bilateral vision loss in juveniles and young adults. A 12-year-old boy had complained of blurred vision in both eyes for more than 1 year. His best-corrected visual acuity was 0.08 in the right eye and 0.1 in the left. Ophthalmologic examination showed bilateral optic disc hyperemia and margin blurring, peripapillary telangiectasis, and a relative afferent pupil defect in his right eye. Fluorescein angiography showed no stain or leakage around the optic disc in the late phase. Visual field analysis showed central scotoma in the left eye and a near-total defect in the right. Upon examination of the patient's mitochondrial DNA, a point mutation at nucleotide position 11778 was found, and the diagnosis of LHON was confirmed. Coenzyme Q10 was used to treat the patient

AbstractTumoral calcinosis is an uncommon disease characterized by tumor-like lesions composed of calcium salt. This condition is not a true neoplasm but an imbalance of calcium and phosphorus metabolism resulting from hereditary causes or secondary defects. Medical therapy to balance calcium and phosphorus is the cornerstone of treatment. However, when pain or other compression symptoms occur, surgical excision is indicated. We report a 53-year-old man who presented with a swollen mass over his left shoulder with severe pain and a decreased range of motion for about 6 months. He had a history of chronic renal failure and was on hemodialysis for 20 years. After serial examinations, hyperphosphatemia, hypocalcemia, and secondary hyperparathyroidism were diagnosed. Excision of the mass was performed. The pathological examination results revealed tumoral calcinosis. He was then referred to a nephrologist to adjust the medication, and dialysate was supplied to balance the calcium and phosphorus metabolism. He recovered well without significant complications or recurrence after 5 years of follow-up

AbstractThe objective of this study is to examine the container development strategies in the port of Taichung from the viewpoints of carriers, port authorities and shipping academics. The six most important strategic attributes from the all respondents perceptions are Enhancing the services of direct shipping with Mainland China, simplified customs procedures, simplified administrative procedures, developing service routes with Hong Kong and Mainland China, improving port information systems, and flexible rate to response market change. Based on a factor analysis, the findings reflect that price and incentive strategic dimension was the most import strategic dimension, followed by marketing and direct shipping with Mainland China as well as reorganization and information service strategic dimensions. In addition, the perceived implemented period for container development strategic attributes for the Taichung Port was also investigated in this study. Results indicated that four development strategies stood out as being short-term need to perform to all respondents were providing one-stop shopping services for carriers, flexible rate to response market change, enhancing employee training and knowledge, and strengthening port marketing and promotion. Theoretical and managerial implications of the research findings are discussed

The development and confirmatory factor analysis of the Service-Learning Reflection Scale for undergraduates

The purpose of this study is to develop and to examine the construct validity of the service-learning reflection scale for undergraduates based on Kolb\u27s learning theory. The research aims to: (1) recognize undergraduates\u27 levels of reflection for service-learning; (2) let undergraduates understand their learning styles; (3) evaluate the effect of service-learning for the instructors. We used the Likert\u27s style to make the scales. There are 33 items in the initial scale divided into four subscales inclusive of the concrete experience (CE), the reflection observation (RO), the abstract conceptualization (AC), and the active experience (AE). For the very first time, we invite four experts to evaluate all the items to proceed three times Delphi technique process. We adopt the item analysis, exploratory factor analysis and reliability analysis via 326 participants in the pretest. Cronbach\u27s alpha reliability coefficients of the four subscales are from .80 to .87, and that of the total scale was .95. The whole explained variance was 60.16%. In this study, we make use of the stratified sampling, 1,251 undergraduates, to analyze the construct validity by the confirmatory factor analysis. The model index such as GFI, AGFI, NFI, RFI, IFI and CFI are above .90, RMSEA and RMR are below .05, as well as PGFI and PNFI are above .50. In addition, the structural equation modeling analysis indicates measurement weights, measurement intercepts, structural covariance matrixes and measurement residuals of male/female and general/technical undergraduates groups are no significant differences. Moreover, the Cronbach\u27s alpha values of the four subscales are from .85 to .86, and that of the total scale is .95. The results show that the CFA and reliability analysis confirm the theoretical structure as well

Mozart K.448 listening decreased seizure recurrence and epileptiform discharges in children with first unprovoked seizures: a randomized controlled study

BACKGROUND: Increasing numbers of reports show the beneficial effects of listening to Mozart music in decreasing epileptiform discharges as well as seizure frequency in epileptic children. There has been no effective method to reduce seizure recurrence after the first unprovoked seizure until now. In this study, we investigated the effect of listening to Mozart K.448 in reducing the seizure recurrence rate in children with first unprovoked seizures. METHODS: Forty-eight children who experienced their first unprovoked seizure with epileptiform discharges were included in the study. They were randomly placed into treatment (n = 24) and control (n = 24) groups. Children in the treatment group listened to Mozart K.448 daily before bedtime for at least six months. Two patients in the treatment group were excluded from analysis due to discontinuation intervention. Finally, forty-six patients were analyzed. Most of these patients (89.1%) were idiopathic in etiology. Seizure recurrence rates and reduction of epileptiform discharges were compared. RESULTS: The average follow-up durations in the treatment and control groups were 18.6 ± 6.6 and 20.1 ± 5.1 months, respectively. The seizure recurrence rate was estimated to be significantly lower in the treatment group than the control group over 24 months (37.2% vs. 76.8%, p = 0.0109). Significant decreases in epileptiform discharges were also observed after 1, 2, and 6 months of listening to Mozart K.448 when compared with EEGs before listening to music. There were no significant differences in gender, mentality, seizure type, and etiology between the recurrence and non-recurrence groups. CONCLUSIONS: Although the case number was limited and control music was not performed in this study, the study revealed that listening to Mozart K.448 reduced the seizure recurrence rate and epileptiform discharges in children with first unprovoked seizures, especially of idiopathic etiology. We believe that Mozart K.448 could be a promising alternative treatment in patients with first unprovoked seizures and abnormal EEGs. Further large-scaled study should be conducted to confirm the effect. TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT01892605, date: June-19-201

THE SURFACE EMG ACTIVITY OF THE UPPER LIMB MUSCLES OF BADMINTON FOREHAND AND BACKHAND SMASHES

The purpose of this study was to analyze the surface EMG activity of the upper limb muscles of Taiwan elite badminton players when they were performing the forehand and the backhand smashes. We used two digital video cameras to obtain the 3D kinematics data of the shuttlecock, and measured the surface EMG signals of seven upper limb muscles. The results showed that there were significant differences between forehand and backhand smashes in the following variables: the initial shuttle velocity, the contact height, the initial flight angle of the shuttle, the sequence of the surface EMG activities of the upper limbs and the mean IEMG amplitude in the selected muscles. The reason why the forehand smash was faster than the backhand smash might be because the up swing displacement and up swing racket velocity of the forehand smash was greater than that of the backhand smash
