Context effects on second-language learning of tonal contrasts.
Studies of lexical tone learning generally focus on monosyllabic contexts, while reports of phonetic learning benefits associated with input variability are based largely on experienced learners. This study trained inexperienced learners on Mandarin tonal contrasts to test two hypotheses regarding the influence of context and variability on tone learning. The first hypothesis was that increased phonetic variability of tones in disyllabic contexts makes initial tone learning more challenging in disyllabic than monosyllabic words. The second hypothesis was that the learnability of a given tone varies across contexts due to differences in tonal variability. Results of a word learning experiment supported both hypotheses: tones were acquired less successfully in disyllables than in monosyllables, and the relative difficulty of disyllables was closely related to contextual tonal variability. These results indicate limited relevance of monosyllable-based data on Mandarin learning for the disyllabic majority of the Mandarin lexicon. Furthermore, in the short term, variability can diminish learning; its effects are not necessarily beneficial but dependent on acquisition stage and other learner characteristics. These findings thus highlight the importance of considering contextual variability and the interaction between variability and type of learner in the design, interpretation, and application of research on phonetic learning

UV-Photolithography Fabrication of Poly-Ethylene Glycol Hydrogels Encapsulated with Hepatocytes
The development of biomanufacturing technologies particularly, layered manufacturing has
advanced cell encapsulation processes in an effort to mimic the cellular microenvironment for invitro studies. This paper illustrates an inexpensive UV-photolithographic method for
encapsulation of human hepatocytes in three dimensional structures using poly-ethylene
diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogels as candidate substrates. In order to further develop this
technology for layered fabrication, we have quantified the long-term effects of the photo-initiator
concentration and UV light exposure on the metabolic rates of encapsulated human hepatocytes
under a 21 day study. The photoinitator toxicity was observed immediately after polymerization
with no significant cytotoxicity on a long term basis. A cellular viability is examined and
reported for the UV photopolymerization process. Cell phenotype maintenance was observed by
measuring the amount of urea produced over a 1 week time period. This photo encapsulation
process may find use in the fabrication of spatially complex 3D scaffolds for tissue engineering
applications, elucidation of the 3D structure-pharmacokinetic response relationship and the
fabrication of complex multi-compartment liver tissue analog devices for drug screening

Pitch ability as an aptitude for tone learning
Tone languages such as Mandarin use voice pitch to signal lexical contrasts, presenting a challenge for second/foreign language (L2) learners whose native languages do not use pitch in this manner. The present study examined components of an aptitude for mastering L2 lexical tone. Native English speakers with no previous tone language experience completed a Mandarin word learning task, as well as tests of pitch ability, musicality, L2 aptitude, and general cognitive ability. Pitch ability measures improved predictions of learning performance beyond musicality, L2 aptitude, and general cognitive ability and also predicted transfer of learning to new talkers. In sum, although certain nontonal measures help predict successful tone learning, the central components of tonal aptitude are pitch-specific perceptual measures
Chiral Vertex Operators in Off-Conformal Theory: The Sine-Gordon Example
We study chiral vertex operators in the sine-Gordon [SG] theory, viewed as an
off-conformal system. We find that these operators, which would have been
primary fields in the conformal limit, have interesting and, in some ways,
unexpected properties in the SG model. Some of them continue to have scale-
invariant dynamics even in the presence of the non-conformal cosine
interaction. For instance, it is shown that the Mandelstam operator for the
bosonic representation of the Fermi field does {\it not} develop a mass term in
the SG theory, contrary to what the real Fermi field in the massive Thirring
model is expected to do. It is also shown that in the presence of the
non-conformal interactions, some vertex operators have unique Lorentz spins,

Rotational CARS application to simultaneous and multiple-point temperature and concentration determination in a turbulent flow
Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) from the pure rotational Raman lines of N2 is employed to measure the instantaneous (approximately 10 ns) rotational temperature of N2 gas at room temperature and below with good spatial resolution (0.2 x 0.2 x 3.0 cu mm). A broad bandwidth dye laser is used to obtain the entire rotational spectrum from a single laser pulse; the CARS signal is then dispersed by a spectrograph and recorded on an optical multichannel analyzer. A best fit temperature is found in several seconds with the aid of a computer for each experimental spectrum by a least squares comparison with calculated spectra. The model used to calculate the theoretical spectra incorporates the temperature and pressure dependence of the pressure-broadened rotational Raman lines, includes the nonresonant background susceptibility, and assumes that the pump laser has a finite linewidth. Temperatures are fit to experimental spectra recorded over the temperature range of 135 to 296 K, and over the pressure range of .13 to 15.3 atm
Testing validation tools on CLIPS-based expert systems
The Expert Systems Validation Associate (EVA) is a validation system which was developed at the Lockheed Software Technology Center and Artificial Intelligence Center between 1986 and 1990. EVA is an integrated set of generic tools to validate any knowledge-based system written in any expert system shell such as C Language Integrated Production System (CLIPS), ART, OPS5, KEE, and others. Many validation tools have been built in the EVA system. In this paper, we describe the testing results of applying the EVA validation tools to the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) Fault Diagnosis, Isolation, and Reconfiguration (FDIR) expert system, written in CLIPS, obtained from the NASA Johnson Space Center
