    Indirect force measurement technique estimates unsteady forces acting on elastic model during wind tunnel tests. Measurement of forces is practically insensitive to errors in aeroelastic scaling between model and full-scale structure, simplifying design, fabrication and dynamic calibration

    Holographic End-Point of Spatially Modulated Phase Transition

    In the previous paper [arXiv:0911.0679], we showed that the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole in the 5-dimensional anti-de Sitter space coupled to the Maxwell theory with the Chern-Simons term is unstable when the Chern-Simons coupling is sufficiently large. In the dual conformal field theory, the instability suggests a spatially modulated phase transition. In this paper, we construct and analyze non-linear solutions which describe the end-point of this phase transition. In the limit where the Chern-Simons coupling is large, we find that the phase transition is of the second order with the mean field critical exponent. However, the dispersion relation with the Van Hove singularity enhances quantum corrections in the bulk, and we argue that this changes the order of the phase transition from the second to the first. We compute linear response functions in the non-linear solution and find an infinite off-diagonal DC conductivity in the new phase.Comment: 21 pages, 22 figures. v2: a note and a reference adde

    Roles of mechanistic target of rapamycin and transforming growth factor-B signaling in the molting gland (Y-organ) of the blackback land crab, Gecarcinus lateralis

    Molting in decapod crustaceans is controlled by molt-inhibiting hormone (MIH), an eyestalk neuropeptide that suppresses production of ecdysteroids by a pair of molting glands (Y-organs or YOs). Eyestalk ablation (ESA) activates the YOs, which hypertrophy and increase ecdysteroid secretion. At mid premolt, which occurs 7–14 days post-ESA, the YO transitions to the committed state; hemolymph ecdysteroid titers increase further and the animal reaches ecdysis ~ 3 weeks post-ESA. Two conserved signaling pathways, mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), are expressed in the Gecarcinus lateralis YO. Rapamycin, an mTOR antagonist, inhibits YO ecdysteroidogenesis in vitro. In this study, rapamycin lowered hemolymph ecdysteroid titer in ESA G. lateralis in vivo; levels were significantly lower than in control animals at all intervals (1–14 days post-ESA). Injection of SB431542, an activin TGF-β receptor antagonist, lowered hemolymph ecdysteroid titers 7 and 14 days post-ESA, but had no effect on ecdysteroid titers at 1 and 3 days post-ESA. mRNA levels of mTOR signaling genes Gl-mTOR, Gl-Akt, and Gl-S6k were increased by 3 days post-ESA; the increases in Gl-mTOR and Gl-Akt mRNA levels were blocked by SB431542. Gl-elongation factor 2 and Gl-Rheb mRNA levels were not affected by ESA, but SB431542 lowered mRNA levels at Days 3 and 7 post-ESA. The mRNA level of an activin TGF-β peptide, Gl-myostatin-like factor (Mstn), increased 5.5-fold from 0 to 3 days post-ESA, followed by a 50-fold decrease from 3 to 7 days post-ESA. These data suggest that (1) YO activation involves an up regulation of the mTOR signaling pathway; (2) mTOR is required for YO commitment; and (3) a Mstn-like factor mediates the transition of the YO from the activated to the committed state

    Using probe electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and machine learning for detecting pancreatic cancer with high performance

    A rapid blood-based diagnostic modality to detect pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) with high accuracy is an unmet medical need. The study aimed to validate a unique diagnosis system using Probe Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (PESI-MS) and Machine Learning to the diagnosis of PDAC. Peripheral blood samples were collected from a total of 322 consecutive PDAC patients and 265 controls with a family history of PDAC. Five µl of serum samples were analyzed using PESI-MS system. The mass spectra from each specimen were then fed into machine learning algorithms to discriminate between control and cancer cases. A total of 587 serum samples were analyzed. The sensitivity of the machine learning algorithm using PESI-MS profiles to identify PDAC is 90.8% with specificity of 91.7% (95% CI 83.9%-97.4% and 82.8%-97.7% respectively). Combined PESI-MS profiles with age and CA19-9 as predictors, the accuracy for stage 1 or 2 of PDAC is 92.9% and for stage 3 or 4 is 93% (95% CI 86.3-98.2; 87.9-97.4 respectively). The accuracy and simplicity of the PESI-MS profiles combined with machine learning provide an opportunity to detect PDAC at an early stage and must be applicable to the examination of at-risk populations. Hadronic production of the PP-wave excited BcB_c-states (BcJ,L=1∗B_{cJ,L=1}^*)

    Full text link
    Adopting the complete αs4\alpha_s^4 approach of the perturbative QCD (pQCD) and updated parton distribution functions, we have estimated the hadronic production of PP-wave excited BcB_c-states (BcJ,L=1∗B_{cJ,L=1}^*). In the estimate, special care on the relation of the production amplitude to the derivative of wave function at origin of the potential model is payed. For experimental references, main uncertainties are discussed, and the total cross sections and the distributions of the production with reasonable cuts at the energies of Tevatron and LHC are computed and presented. The results show that PP-wave production may contribute to the BcB_c-meson production indirectly by a factor about 0.5 of the direct production, and with such a big cross section, it is worth further to study the possibility to observe the PP-wave production itself experimentally.Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures, to replace for revising the misprints ec

    Custodial bulk Randall-Sundrum model and B->K* l+ l'-

    Full text link
    The custodial Randall-Sundrum model based on SU(2)_L X SU(2)_R X U(1)_(B-L) generates new flavor-changing-neutral-current (FCNC) phenomena at tree level, mediated by Kaluza-Klein neutral gauge bosons. Based on two natural assumptions of universal 5D Yukawa couplings and no-cancellation in explaining the observed standard model fermion mixing matrices, we determine the bulk Dirac mass parameters. Phenomenological constraints from lepton-flavor-violations are also used to specify the model. From the comprehensive study of B->K* l+ l'-, we found that only the B->K*ee decay has sizable new physics effects. The zero value position of the forward-backward asymmetry in this model is also evaluated, with about 5% deviation from the SM result. Other effective observables are also suggested such as the ratio of two differential (or partially integrated) decay rates of B->K*ee and B->K*mu mu. For the first KK gauge boson mass of M_A^(1)=2-4 TeV, we can have about 10-20% deviation from the SM results.Comment: references added with minor change

    Vacuum Energy Density and Cosmological Constant in dS Brane World

    Full text link
    We discuss the vacuum energy density and the cosmological constant of dS5_5 brane world with a dilaton field. It is shown that a stable AdS4_4 brane can be constructed and gravity localization can be realized. An explicit relation between the dS bulk cosmological constant and the brane cosmological constant is obtained. The discrete mass spectrum of the massive scalar field in the AdS4_4 brane is used to acquire the relationship between the brane cosmological constant and the vacuum energy density. The vacuum energy density in the brane gotten by this method is in agreement with astronomical observations.Comment: 16 pages,4 figure
