    Reconstructive challenge of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans in the female breast

    Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is an uncommon locally aggressive malignant neoplasm that most frequently appears in the trunk, followed by the extremities, head, and neck. But occurrence in the breast is extremely rare. We present a case of a 28-year-old woman, who had a history of trauma 5 years previously and excision 1 year before presentation at our clinic. We performed wide excision, together with microscopic and immunohistochemical analysis. No postoperative oncologic treatment was used and she remains disease-free 1 year after the surgery without any tumor recurrence. Here, we report a case of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans in the female breast and present a detailed discussion of the diagnosis and treatment with reference to available literatures

    Novel water filtration of saline water in the outermost layer of mangrove roots

    The scarcity of fresh water is a global challenge faced at present. Several desalination methods have been suggested to secure fresh water from sea water. However, conventional methods suffer from technical limitations, such as high power consumption, expensive operating costs, and limited system durability. In this study, we examined the feasibility of using halophytes as a novel technology of desalinating high-concentration saline water for long periods. This study investigated the biophysical characteristics of sea water filtration in the roots of the mangrove Rhizophora stylosa from a plant hydrodynamic point of view. R. stylosa can grow even in saline water, and the salt level in its roots is regulated within a certain threshold value through filtration. The root possesses a hierarchical, triple layered pore structure in the epidermis, and most Na+ ions are filtered at the first sublayer of the outermost layer. The high blockage of Na+ ions is attributed to the high surface zeta potential of the first layer. The second layer, which is composed of macroporous structures, also facilitates Na+ ion filtration.     Large area deep ultraviolet light of Al0.47_{0.47}Ga0.53_{0.53}N/Al0.56_{0.56}Ga0.44_{0.44}N multi quantum well with carbon nanotube electron beam pumping

    Large area deep ultraviolet (DUV) light is generated by carbon nanotube (CNT) cold cathode electron beam (C-beam) irradiation on Al0.47_{0.47}Ga0.53_{0.53}N/Al0.56_{0.56}Ga0.44_{0.44}N multi quantum wells (MQWs) anode. We developed areal electron beam (EB) with CNT cold cathode emitters. The CNT emitters on silicon wafer were deposited with an area of 188 mm2^2 , and these were vertically aligned and had conical structures. We optimized the C-beam irradiation conditions to effectively excite AlGaN MQWs. When AlGaN MQWs were excited using an anode voltage of 3 kV and an anode current of 0.8 mA, DUV with a wavelength of 278.7 nm was generated in a large area of 303 mm2^2 . This DUV area is more than 11 times larger than the light emitting area of conventional EB pumped light sources and UV-LEDs

    Higher-order Multi-dimensional Limiting Strategy for Correction Procedure via Reconstruction

Kim, Higher-order Multi-dimensional Limiting Strategy for Discontinuous Galerkin Methods in Compressible Inviscid and Viscous Flows, Comp. & Fluids, In press] is improved and applied to correction procedure via reconstruction (CPR) on unstructured grids. MLP, which has been originally developed in nite volume method (FVM), provides an accurate, robust and ecient oscillation-control mechanism in multiple dimensions for linear reconstruction. This limiting philosophy can be hierarchically extended into higher-order Pn reconstruction. The resulting algorithms, called the hierarchical MLP, facilitate the accurate capturing of detailed flow structures in both continuous and discontinuous regions. This algorithm has been developed in the modal DG framework, but it also can be formulated into a nodal framework, most notably the CPR framework. Troubled-cells are detected by applying the MLP concept, and the nal accuracy is determined by the projection procedure and MLP limiting step.     Proton-pump Inhibitors and the Risk of Dementia: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

    Background/Aims Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are widely used to treat several acid-related gastrointestinal disorders. This study aimed to investigate the risk of dementia in patients taking PPIs. Materials and Methods A systematic review was conducted to evaluate the correlation between PPIs and dementia. The methodological quality of the included studies was evaluated using the Risk of Bias Assessment tool for non-randomized studies. Publication bias was assessed. Results A total of 12 nested, case-control, and cohort studies were identified and analyzed. We obtained hazard ratios (HRs) from five studies and performed a meta-analysis. The meta-analysis of four cohort studies and one nested case-control study showed no association between PPIs and dementia (HR, 1.165; 95% CI, 0.912~1.488; P=0.222). Sensitivity analysis revealed consistent results. No publication bias was detected. Conclusions This systematic review and meta-analysis revealed no statistically significant association between the use of PPIs and dementia

    Full-length cDNA sequences from Rhesus monkey placenta tissue: analysis and utility for comparative mapping

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Rhesus monkeys (<it>Macaca mulatta</it>) are widely-used as experimental animals in biomedical research and are closely related to other laboratory macaques, such as cynomolgus monkeys (<it>Macaca </it><it>fascicularis</it>), and to humans, sharing a last common ancestor from about 25 million years ago. Although rhesus monkeys have been studied extensively under field and laboratory conditions, research has been limited by the lack of genetic resources. The present study generated placenta full-length cDNA libraries, characterized the resulting expressed sequence tags, and described their utility for comparative mapping with human RefSeq mRNA transcripts.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>From rhesus monkey placenta full-length cDNA libraries, 2000 full-length cDNA sequences were determined and 1835 rhesus placenta cDNA sequences longer than 100 bp were collected. These sequences were annotated based on homology to human genes. Homology search against human RefSeq mRNAs revealed that our collection included the sequences of 1462 putative rhesus monkey genes. Moreover, we identified 207 genes containing exon alterations in the coding region and the untranslated region of rhesus monkey transcripts, despite the highly conserved structure of the coding regions. Approximately 10% (187) of all full-length cDNA sequences did not represent any public human RefSeq mRNAs. Intriguingly, two rhesus monkey specific exons derived from the transposable elements of AluYRa2 (SINE family) and MER11B (LTR family) were also identified.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The 1835 rhesus monkey placenta full-length cDNA sequences described here could expand genomic resources and information of rhesus monkeys. This increased genomic information will greatly contribute to the development of evolutionary biology and biomedical research.</p

    Management of chest keloids

    Keloid formation is one of the most challenging clinical problems in wound healing. With increasing frequency of open heart surgery, chest keloid formations are not infrequent in the clinical practice. The numerous treatment methods including surgical excision, intralesional steroid injection, radiation therapy, laser therapy, silicone gel sheeting, and pressure therapy underscore how little is understood about keloids. Keloids have a tendency to recur after surgical excision as a single treatment. Stretching tension is clearly associated with keloid generation, as keloids tend to occur on high tension sites such as chest region. The authors treated 58 chest keloid patients with surgical excision followed by intraoperative and postoperative intralesional steroid injection. Even with minor complications and recurrences, our protocol results in excellent outcomes in cases of chest keloids
