    Embodied carbon and construction cost differences between Hong Kong and Melbourne buildings

    Limiting the amount of embodied carbon in buildings can help minimize the damaging impacts of global warming through lower upstream emission of CO2. This study empirically investigates the embodied carbon footprint of new-build and refurbished buildings in both Hong Kong and Melbourne to determine the embodied carbon profile and its relationship to both embodied energy and construction cost. The Hong Kong findings suggest that mean embodied carbon for refurbished buildings is 33-39% lower than new-build projects, and the cost for refurbished buildings is 22-50% lower than new-build projects (per square metre of floor area). The Melbourne findings, however, suggest that mean embodied carbon for refurbished buildings is 4% lower than new-build projects, and the cost for refurbished buildings is 24% higher than new-build projects (per square metre of floor area). Embodied carbon ranges from 645-1,059 kgCO2e/m2 for new-build and 294-655 kgCO2e/m2 for refurbished projects in Hong Kong, and 1,138-1,705 kgCO2e/m2 for new-build and 900-1,681 kgCO2e/m2 for refurbished projects in Melbourne. The reasons behind these locational discrepancies are explored and critiqued. Overall, a very strong linear relationship between embodied energy and construction cost in both cities was found and can be used to predict the former, given the latter

    Seven Dimensions of Wellness in Athletes with Upper Extremity Orthopedic Injuries: A Manual for Occupational Therapists

    Increased attention has been placed on sports and athletes within the United States cultural. The latest reports of the noted sports economist Andrew Zimbalist estimated that the annual revenue of only 4 North American sports amounts to approximately $15 billion (Markovits, 2010). Athletes with upper extremity orthopedic injuries have traditionally been treated by occupational hand therapists (Hanson, Nabavi, & Yuen, 2000) however; research does not adequately address their needs outside of physical injury and musculoskeletal gain. Evidence is lacking within the profession of occupational therapy that encompasses the athlete as an occupational being. An occupational being is a person who participates in everyday occupations as an essential aspect of life. The physical dimension of wellness has traditionally been at the forefront of occupational hand therapy neglecting all other areas of wellness (social, spiritual, environmental, occupational, emotional, and intellectual dimensions of wellness). The Seven Dimensions of Wellness with Upper Extremity Orthopedic Injuries: A Manual for Occupational Therapists will provide occupational hand therapists with a resource to achieve successful outcomes with a client-centered Occupational Adaptation approach within a hand therapy facility. The manual was developed to guide intended to be used as a guide for therapists to implement at the beginning (initial evaluation), during (intervention), and at the end of therapy (discharge planning) to direct the client and therapist through a process of adaptation (rehabilitation) involving the Seven Dimensions of Wellness. The manual includes case studies, activities, and possible interventions associated with each dimension of wellness. The step-by-step instructions enable the therapist and the athlete to collaborate the treatment direction based on a combination of the athlete\u27s concerns paired with the occupational therapists‟ professional knowledge. It is hypothesized that athlete satisfaction and wellness recovery will be increased in treatment of athletes through guidance from this manual

    SOLVE (Specification using an Object-based, LOTOS-defined, Visual language) is designed to allow formal requirements capture, particularly for reactive systems. The SOLVE language is object-based, and formally defined using LOTOS (Language Of Temporal Ordering Specification). SOLVE is supported by tools that allow direct visual animation of systems specified in this language. Animation is supported by translating a SOLVE specification automatically into a LOTOS specification, and then graphically simulating this. A further application is embodied in the XDILL tool that supports requirements specification and visual animation of digital logic circuits. Several illustrative SOLVE examples are given

    Community-Based Health and Exposure Study around Urban Oil Developments in South Los Angeles.

    Oilfield-adjacent communities often report symptoms such as headaches and/or asthma. Yet, little data exists on health experiences and exposures in urban environments with oil and gas development. In partnership with Promotoras de Salud (community health workers), we gathered household surveys nearby two oil production sites in Los Angeles. We tested the capacity of low-cost sensors for localized exposure estimates. Bilingual surveys of 205 randomly sampled residences were collected within two 1500 ft. buffer areas (West Adams and University Park) surrounding oil development sites. We used a one-sample proportion test, comparing overall rates from the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) of Service Planning Area 6 (SPA6) and Los Angeles County for variables of interest such as asthma. Field calibrated low-cost sensors recorded methane emissions. Physician diagnosed asthma rates were reported to be higher within both buffers than in SPA6 or LA County. Asthma prevalence in West Adams but not University Park was significantly higher than in Los Angeles County. Respondents with diagnosed asthma reported rates of emergency room visits in the previous 12 months similar to SPA6. 45% of respondents were unaware of oil development; 63% of residents would not know how to contact local regulatory authorities. Residents often seek information about their health and site-related activities. Low-cost sensors may be useful in highlighting differences between sites or recording larger emission events and can provide localized data alongside resident-reported symptoms. Regulatory officials should help clarify information to the community on methods for reporting health symptoms.     #LetThemStay: : Visual Representations of Protests and Community Mobilization for Asylum Seekers in Australia

See https:/creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/.The indefinite mandatory detention on the mainland and in offshore processing centers of asylum seekers applying for protection in Australia is particularly controversial due to the government’s notoriously harsh policy. In response, large-scale public protests have been staged across the country in recent years to register popular dissent and convey concerns to decision-makers. However, dominant media representations of protests have historically been largely negative, often cast as ineffectual at best, and at worst, violent clashes that alienate the broader population from the cause in question. This paper outlines a visual analysis of media representations of protests that took place in February 2016 against the proposed deportation of 267 asylum seekers from the Australian mainland as part of the #LetThemStay campaign. Through the analysis of four photographs from a range of media outlets, we found that depicting peaceful protests methods and community mobilization complicated dominant understandings of protests and protesters. Indeed, #LetThemStay demonstrated the political power of compassionate solidarity between participants afforded the privilege of safe residency and citizenship, and those forcibly absent who are denied such rights. As such, the paper highlights the impact of peaceful protesting, while also recognizing its limitations in changing Australia’s punitive asylum seeker policies.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

    Small fibre neuropathy in sarcoidosis

    Sarcoidosis is characterized by multisystem granulomatous formation particularly in the chest. In this case report, we present an uncommon case highlighting significant peripheral nerve involvement, a phenomenon that is not well recognized  in sarcoidosis. The patient presented with severe incapacitating pain. Sarcoidosis as being the underlying cause was only established after extensive investigations. This case highlights the importance of recognizing small fibre peripheral polyneuropathy as a possible presentation of sarcoidosis. This could help to direct appropriate  medical intervention
