    A Brief Note on the Interaction of an Actuator Cascade with a Singularity

    We have recently become concerned with making estimates of steady forces that may be exerted between moving blade rows and stationary blade rows or volutes. Our present interest is with time averaged forces for estimation of shaft loads and flow asymmetry forces rather than with transient processes. For this purpose we have adopted the well-known "actuator" model for the blade row in which the flow leaving the row or cascade is assumed to have a constant leaving angle. The disturbances external to this row such as a volute may be represented by distributions of vortex elements as was done for example by Domm and Hergt [1]

    Experimental Measurements of Hydrodynamic Stiffness Matrices for a Centrifugal Pump Impeller

    The objective of the Rotor Force Test Facility at the California Institute of Technology is to artificially orbit the center of rotation of an impeller enclosed within a volute over a range of frequencies from zero to synchronous and to measure the resulting forces on the impeller. This paper reports preliminary data from the first stage experiments in which the shaft is orbited at low frequency. Steady volute forces along with stiffness matrices due to the change in position of the rotor center are measured. Static pressure taps around the volute are used to obtain volute pressure distributions for various fixed positions of the impeller center and for various flow rates. Static pressure forces are calculated from these pressure distributions allowing a more complete analysis of the components of the impeller forces. Comparison is made with various existing theoretical and experimental results

    Understanding the risk and protective factors associated with obesity amongst Libyan adults - a qualitative study

    BACKGROUND: There are a range of multifaceted behavioural and societal factors that combine to contribute to the causes of obesity. However, it is not yet known how particularly countries' cultural norms are contributing to the global obesity epidemic. Despite obesity reaching epidemic proportions in Libya, since the discovery of oil in 1959, there is a lack of information about obesity in Libyan adults. This study sought to explore the views of key informants about the risk and protective factors associated with obesity among Libyan men and women. METHODS: A series of qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with Libyan healthcare professionals and community leaders. RESULTS: Eleven main themes (risk and protective factors) were identified, specifically: socio-demographic and biological factors, socioeconomic status, unhealthy eating behaviours, knowledge about obesity, social-cultural influences, Libya's healthcare facilities, physical activity and the effect of the neighbourhood environment, sedentary behaviour, Libyan food-subsidy policy, and suggestions for preventing and controlling obesity. CONCLUSIONS: Key recommendations are that an electronic health information system needs to be implemented and awareness about obesity and its causes and consequences needs to be raised among the public in order to dispel the many myths and misconceptions held by Libyans about obesity. The current political instability within Libya is contributing to a less-active lifestyle for the population due to security concerns and the impact of curfews. Our findings have implications for Libyan health policy and highlight the urgent need for action towards mitigating against the obesity epidemic in Libya

    A critical role of RBM8a in proliferation and differentiation of embryonic neural progenitors

    BACKGROUND: Nonsense mediated mRNA decay (NMD) is an RNA surveillance mechanism that controls RNA stability and ensures the speedy degradation of erroneous and unnecessary transcripts. This mechanism depends on several core factors in the exon junction complex (EJC), eIF4A3, RBM8a, Magoh, and BTZ, as well as peripheral factors to distinguish premature stop codons (PTCs) from normal stop codons in transcripts. Recently, emerging evidence has indicated that NMD factors are associated with neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual disability (ID). However, the mechanism in which these factors control embryonic brain development is not clear. RESULT: We found that RBM8a is critical for proliferation and differentiation in cortical neural progenitor cells (NPCs). RBM8a is highly expressed in the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the early embryonic cortex, suggesting that RBM8a may play a role in regulating NPCs. RBM8a overexpression stimulates embryonic NPC proliferation and suppresses neuronal differentiation. Conversely, knockdown of RBM8a in the neocortex reduces NPC proliferation and promotes premature neuronal differentiation. Moreover, overexpression of RBM8a suppresses cell cycle exit and keeps cortical NPCs in a proliferative state. To uncover the underlying mechanisms of this phenotype, genome-wide RNAseq was used to identify potential downstream genes of RBM8a in the brain, which have been implicated in autism and neurodevelopmental disorders. Interestingly, autism and schizophrenia risk genes are highly represented in downstream transcripts of RBM8a. In addition, RBM8a regulates multiple alternative splicing genes and NMD targets that are implicated in ASD. Taken together, this data suggests a novel role of RBM8a in the regulation of neurodevelopment. CONCLUSIONS: Our studies provide some insight into causes of mental illnesses and will facilitate the development of new therapeutic strategies for neurodevelopmental illnesses.     Gender gap in annual preventive care services in France

    International audienceBackground: In France, screening for cardiovascular risk factors is recommended during annual preventive visits. However, data are lacking on the temporal trend in women's uptake to preventive care services, and in cardiovascular and mortality outcomes. The aim of the study was to investigate the participation and mortality of women in annual preventive care services in a major preventive medicine center in France. Method: Ee conducted repeated cross-sectional studies including a total of 366,270 individuals who had a first examination at the Centre d'Investigations Préventives et Cliniques, France, between January 1992 and December 2011. Findings: Women's participation was low below 50 years of age, then increases from 50 to 70 years, and is lower for women older than 70 years. The gap in female participation was more pronounced among individuals with high education, low social deprivation, and no depressive symptoms. Compared with the general population, the screened population had significantly lower standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) among both men and women, for all age ranges. Screened women aged 18-49 years showed a lower mortality gain compared with men of the same age; SMRs did not differ significantly by sex for individuals over 50 years. Interpretation: In this community-based sample, compared with men, women's participation to annual preventive care services was lower, and screened women had a lower mortality gain. Despite the demonstrated benefit of annual check-ups on health, there is a gender gap in adherence to preventive programs and in efficiency of screening programs, especially in the young age range. This gap in cardiovascular disease prevention may result in poorer cardiovascular health in women. Urgent adaptations to overcome this gender gap in preventive screening in France are warranted.     Permeability of silica monoliths containing micro- and nano-pores

    For applications as catalyst supports in flow reactors, porous silica monoliths require a combination of connected pores of micron-scale to enable fluid flow plus nm-scale pores to enable high catalyst area and activity. We have synthesised a range porous silica monoliths, characterised their micron and nm-scale pores and measured their permeability coefficients K. K can be controlled over the range 10-10 m, primarily by adjustment of the polymer/silane concentration ratio, whilst maintaining the specific surface area and nm-scale porosity approximately constant. For the majority of the silica monolith samples, the measured permeability coefficient K is 2-5 times smaller than K for a hypothetical reference system consisting of a monolith with uniform cylindrical pores aligned in the flow direction and with the same average pore diameter and volume fraction. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC
