Development of Resistance in Drosophila Melanogaster by Selective Pressure with Malathion (Organophosphate Insecticide)

    Get PDF
Two strains o f resistant Drosophila melanogaster were cultured by selective pressure with malathion. One group was exposed to a sublethal concentration for its entire life cycle while the other group was exposed to an LC65 for twenty- four hours. The data obtained indicates that both strains developed equal degrees of resistance representing a four- fold increase in the LC50. This appears to be the upper limit of resistance for these flies with respect to their genetic limitations. It is possible, however, that this represents a plateau of resistance and further selection might have caused an increase. Upon obtaining resistance in both strains, population studies were conducted to determine the characteristics of the resistance. Lt was found that a cessation of treatment for five generations did not significantly reduce resistance. The cross breeding of wild flies with resistant flies resulted in offspring that had a mortality curve closely matching the projected mortality curve of flies assumed to have resistance caused by a single dominant gene. There was no indication of resistance being sex linked. Finally, it was found that resistant flies are more susceptible t o malathion when they are reared at a higher temperature (30° C. instead of 25 ° C.)

The completion, adjustment, and operation of a grazing incidence vacuum ultraviolet spectrograph

Most gases, and particularly oxygen and nitrogen, are nearly opaque to radiation in the region from about 1800 Å downward to about 2 Å and hence, for spectroscopic work in this region, the removal of these gases is mandatory. Popular usage generally refers to the range mentioned above as the vacuum ultraviolet. That there remains much experimental work to be done in the vacuum ultraviolet has been pointed out by Boyce in his exhaustive survey of vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy. In order to fill in some of these gaps, Mr. L. H. Chapin, in the, spring of 1950, undertook the construction of a grazing incidence vacuum spectrograph for use in the region 100 Å to 1,000 Å. Due to circumstances beyond his control, Mr. Chapin was unable to complete the instrument in the time available to him, and the present author was assigned to the project in September, 1950 --Introduction, pages 1-2

Explorative study of HRM integration within DAX30 German Automotive Manufacturer

This thesis presents a constructivist grounded theory study of Human Resources Management (HRM) integration within a DAX30 German Automotive Manufacturer. HRM integration is “‘the full integration of HRM with organisational strategy; HRM policies that cohere; and the integration of HRM within line management activities” (Sheenan, 2005: 193). This thesis explores via a blank canvas approach, and the possible disbandment of HR, the status quo and future orientation of HRM integration within a case study - A DAX30 German Automotive Manufacturer. This thesis identifies non-management employees, line-managers and members of the Human resources department concern at the disbandment of the HR function, providing emerging theory defending the current functional structure used within the organization. The status quo of HRM within the organization highlights the lack of strategy transparency and the requirement to adapt the business partner model being followed. The discussion surrounding HRM integration recognizes aspects of HRM integration to be paradoxical. The theory has been developed following the constructivist grounded theory approach, recommended by Charmaz (2006; 2014) and is based on semi-structured interviews with 36 company members of staff - 12 non-management employees, 12 line-managers and 12 members of the Human Resources department. Additional literature supports the theory. The theory adds to the current HRM integration literature, HRM in Germany and paradoxes, by considering HRM integration within a new context. The emergent theory highlights important considerations for the future, moreover the inclusion of strategic recommendations for the case study to enhance HRM integration. Furthermore, the study may be considered of relevance to Constructivist Grounded Theory research, considering methodology and reflections presented within this thesis. The emergent theory includes two models. The ‘HR justification model’ and the ‘HR integration review model’, which through further research and contextual analysis, can be developed for a wider audience

Blockholdings, Dividend Policy, Stock Returns and Return Volatility: Evidence from the UAE

    Get PDF
This paper examines the relationship between the presence of blockholdings and stock returns and return volatility in the United Arab Emirates. Earlier studies report mixed results for the direction of the relationships across both developed and emerging markets. This study focuses specifically on these relationships in a dividend policy framework. This study further investigates the role of blockholder type by distinguishing between government, individual and corporate blockholders. Our results indicate that blockholder ownership reduces stock return volatility for both non-dividend-paying and dividend-paying stocks, does not impact returns and is not perceived as expropriating the wealth of other investors. We also conclude that the blockholders do not exhibit rent-seeking behavior through the extraction of dividends and investors in UAE firms embrace the role of blockholders and the reinvestment of profits

Shifting the Tide: Transit-Oriented Development and Active Transportation Planning in Los Angeles

    Get PDF
Los Angeles (LA) has the reputation of an auto dependent city. Although the region is served by a robust public transportation system, the majority of the population commutes by automobile and has developed in sprawling manner leading to poor air quality, traffic congestion and unsafe streets. Despite this, in recent years, the LA region has made significant headway in reversing sprawl and automobile use. This has included encouraging greater land use densities around transit stations, coupled with investments to active transportation systems. This article presents an overview of the historical context of automobile dependency in Los Angeles, the current transit-oriented development strategies underway, and the planning and implementation of Complete Street strategies. It uses this narrative to illustrate how the city is using these strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the impacts of climate change

    Recipients\u27 Attitudes Toward Welfare

    Get PDF
While the general plight of welfare recipients has long been recognized, little or nothing to date has been ascertained concerning their views toward the system that largely determines their lives. Many recipients find themselves manipulated by a less than personalized bureaucracy but few researchers have sought to examine the experiences and attitudes of these recipients toward that system. Given the recent figures which indicate a welfare explosion (Piven and Cloward, 1971), and the vast expenditures for public assistance programs (Skolnick and Dales, 1969:5), the lack of systematic empirical research in this area is disconcerting. Such information should be of considerable value to the practioner within the social welfare context. Differing policy orientations frequently are implemented without the guidance of relevant baseline information. Further inquiry into the strains inherent in the system would certainly lend itself to a more efficient and workable model. Our purpose here is to carry out such an analysis
